2004 ST 1300 - Hard to start after being on centre stand
« on: January 31, 2017, 08:19:32 AM »
I have a rather interesting issue with my recently purchased 2004 ST1300.
If I leave it on the centre stand for any length of time (+24hrs) the bike is difficult to start. It takes 5+seconds of cranking to start running and sometimes then won't want to idle for some time. (3-5mins)
Now, if the bike is left on the side stand, I don't seem to be having these issues.  :||||
Has anyone else experienced any sort of issues like this or have any ideas what it could be?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Very odd indeed.  The obvious difference is the bike is canted forward on the centre-stand, but is mainly level longitudinally when on the side stand.  If it had a carby you'd look for a stuck float, but with EFI...??

Any EFI experts see anything in that?

I am NOT mechanical in any way ......

but

if the oil was over filled would this "leak" in the to "starter motor fire bang thingy" and make it hard to start??????

sorry for the technical terminology for you non-mechanical sort!    :rofl :rofl

I'm wondering if it is the 5 ways connector.

I did the ECU reset on my ST1300 at 160,000km and it made no difference, but ti was running very well before the reset.

Thanks for all the advice.  ++ Got a few things to do over the weekend now. In addition, I have ordered a new battery as the one in it is "questionable"
Hopefully one or all of these things will fix the issue.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was something bizarre like a dodgy battery.
Try one thing at a time, or we may never know what fixed it.

The first rule of bike maintenance, is start with the easy things first. There is nothing worse than pulling the engine apart only to find the battery was stuffed.

Replace the battery, and cross your fingers.

Both very good pieces of advice.

A lead acid (liquid) battery on its side versus vertical changes where the liquid sits on the plates. Could be just enough difference.

Again, thanks for all the advice on this. My first thing to do was replace the battery. Doing some research here found that the ST needs a decent battery. So, new battery turned up on Friday. Battery is 340CCA as opposed to the one I took out that is marked at 120CCA. Battery is from Batteries Direct. Seem to have pretty good customer service and a great price. (95$ delivered). So far the battery seems to have resolved the issue but we'll see how it goes after a few days on the centre stand.

So after the new battery, problem still there. So, here's what I did to sort the issue.... After doing some reading I decided to bite the bullet and check the 5-way valve. Pulled everything down and found that it was not blocked at all. Now I started fearing the worst. But, kept researching and found one interesting post about someone here with the same issue, he changed from 98 to 95 octane fuel and problem resolved. So, what did I have to lose, at the same time I also invested in some Fuel Dr. Heard good reports so again, not expensive in the big picture. Both of these "seemed" to make the starts better but didnt "fix" the issue. Then, for who knows what reason I changed my starting process foe the bike. Leave it on the stand, (centre or side) knock it into neutral, and touch nothing but the starter. No throttle at all. And, well it sat for just over a week during the wet weather, hit the starter this morning, she nicely revved to about 1900 and rode beutiful this morning. Not sure if its been a combination of everything or just playing with the throttle during start that wad stuffing with the ECU or something but my problem seems to be resolved.

I hope you sort out your issue. I never have touched the throttle to start Ruby :13Candy
Perhaps that has been your issue all along. Interesting to hear other opinions.

I never have to use the throttle to start.   Turn the key and off she goes.   The only time I had to change this was when the five way was blocked.

I think it comes back to the old battery. As it was "struggling" to start the bike I may have been twisting the throttle to try to get it going. After the new battery, may have had it stuck in my head to do that. It has been fine for a few weeks now. Hoping thats all it was. My stupidity.... :)

The "Owner's Manual" states that the throttle should be completely closed when starting the bike, and that fully opening the throttle when starting, will cause the ECU to cut off the fuel supply.   Refer to page 71 of your Owner's Manual.

Pete, that's really interesting and something I'll keep in mind, but having said that I've never done more than press the starter button.
It'll wind over 2-3 times and away it goes.
Cold start, it revs to around the 2000 mark then slowly comes back to idle with 2 bars on the temp. gauge; then I reckon it's good to go.
