Michelin Pilot Road 2s - 2nd set done

After 15,000kms the 110/80-18 and 170/60-17 rear are done.  Due to a few trips on straight roads the centre tread is worn out for once.  last set the softer sides wore right down as well as the centre.  Tyres had dyna beads in the whole time, running 36F 42R pressures. No wobbles regardless of wear.  Last set lasted 17,000kms, but the extra 2,000kms must have been using the side tread a bit more rather than the centre.

Those kays are pretty good by bike standards.  I'm not sure the dyna beads help with mileage, and I've not experienced balance change with wear- I thought the loss of rubber would be pretty uniform around the circumference of the tyre.

The only time on the ST I have had a wobble at lower speeds from a worn tyre was with a Bridgestone BT021 tyre, but it was  not a great tyre.  As I haven't had balance problems that I know of, hard to say the dyna beads do anything. Next set I tyres I have used a few times before, so we will see how they go.

I have a Michelin on the front and it seems to be wearing evenly and slowly. I have just used up another tyre on the rear. I need to find one that will last. It is an Avon Storm 2 Ultra.. no problems with the tyre but not sure that it lasted well.. I'll have to see if I wrote down the k's when I had it fitted! I think I will try the Michelin on the rear as well.

I have used the Avon Storms Ultras.  I got around 13,000kms out of a set with similar use to the Michelins.  At the time I thought it was pretty good distance, considering I used to get 10,000kms out of various other tyres.

Ordered a Michelin PR2 from my neighbouring bike shop on Wednesday.. checked to see if it was there this morning and was told that they're on back-order and they don't know when they'll come in! I may as well order form OS.

I developed a bit of a wobble with this one.... I was doing about 140km/h around a gentle left hand bend at the time.  Apparently it sounded like a helicopter then started chucking rubber at the guys behind me.  Thank goodness it didn't lose pressure, would have been goodbye to me and my daughter.....

No wonder it de treaded - There is only 1 corner up there and you had to be doing 140kms / hr around it didnt you

It was a bend, not a corner.  We do have a few corners, just not as many as the rest of Oz.  I was only doing 10km/h over the posted speed limit (by my speedo), so Mr Plod wouldn't have been at all interested

The Honda shop up here had the old tyre mounted on the workshop wall for quite a while. They couldn't believe it had delaminated at that speed and not blown...I was incredibly lucky

Nope, didn't bother, I'd already used up all my luck.  I did invest in proper riding gear for my daughter before I next took her on the bike.  She was on the back when it happened, only wearing jeans, denim jacket and runners. It was a big wake up call.

I have to remember that because I usually get my moneys worth out of my rear tyres (ie right down to the wear bars).. but I have found from experience that there is very little rubber left between the wear bars and the steel mesh.

So, Saaz.. you are using the 170/60 17 instead of the 160/70 17 tyre without issues?

I have used quite a few, in fact probably more of the 170/60 than the 160/70 due to availability issues.  170/60 means slightly more revs for the same speed and the bike sits up a little more on the sidestand but I don'r even notice it after a while.  Main thing is to make sure the 170/60 is rated for the weight of the ST, but if it is listed for the ST1300 no problems.

So, Saaz.. you are using the 170/60 17 instead of the 160/70 17 tyre without issues?

There was still plenty of tread on mine, it was just old rubber.  Spent too much time sitting under the carport instead of being ridden.  At the time I was working 100+ hours per week so didn't get much riding time.

I decided (for convenience) to just go with the Dunlop Roadsmart II tyre at the local shop in the belief that it should be cheaper than the Michelin.. but then found they wanted $260+ for it.. but they did offer it for $250.. so I gave it the ok, then was told there was another $25 to fit.. which meant that I can no longer afford it. Avon Storms were also quoted as $260.. so I will have to try the U.S. :( (or go the dark side!).
