Tyre suggestion
« on: November 09, 2013, 08:08:28 PM »
Hi all out there in st land. I need to get some new tyres for my 1100. I do a lot of commuting to work in all weather including fog on tight twisty road. Some of you will know the road through kangaroo valley nsw. I'm looking for a tyre that gives a lot of stick ability but needs to be able to handle moist conditions as well this road is often wet for days after rain. Currently running Bridgestone 023 front and rear. Godd tyres but as always seeking the wisdom of this great group. Thank you in advance.  :dred11

Black round ones is probably the best bet.  :nahnah :crackup
I have been using the Mitchelin Pr3 and will swear by them in all weather.
They are not happy on dirt /gravel roads but I am getting use to it.

I have PR3s on my bike, and they are working well.

Tyre threads are like oil, lots of info but you need to find what suits you.

The BT023s seem to get good reports, although I have not used them myself.

I can't fault the Pilot Road 2s in all the conditions I have tried them in, and it has been pretty well the best and worst (rain, hail, hot, cold, gravel).  I have used 2 sets of them in the last year, 32,000kms or so.

And yes I have been through Kangaroo Valley on them!

The days of the BT 23 might be limited since the new T30 tyre has been released.

I have just got two brand new never been used Bridgestone T023's. These are being replaced by the T030 which is a softer compound probably no good for straight lining but more grip on corners. My old ones got 16600kms but the front had no tread at all. New ones make a hell of a difference.

I am more than happy with my Michelin PR3's (on my second set) particularly in the wet. I agree with Tipsy's comment about gravel and dirt roads though but generally try to keep to the black stuff so no worries.

Thanks for all the advice about tyres. I have just ordered a new set of pr3 for my st1100. What sort of pressures are people running them on. I usually use the 36 front 42 rear.

I'm running PR2s, and use 42 front and back.  I'm getting 15-18,000 kilometers from a set, and front and backs wear out at about the same time.

On the ST1100, 36 to 38 psi in the front, 42 psi in the rear. ST13s seem happier with higher pressures in the front, as Pete said, but I find that it makes the front tyre seem more skittish and less grip for the ST1100, particularly in the wet or bumpy roads.

Pault, how is the tread looking. Flat in the middle, even wear??

Highway or twisting roads??

front had just gone a bit baldy on right only.  was rather "cupped" or squared off, horrible to ride on. i have to get my monies worth. rear gets squared of and going bald in middle. Daily commute is 166km with 40 of that twisty, best part of my day, leave home at 430/5am no traffic, just me and the dawn so to speak. good way to start the day. i never push too hard in rain. PR3's great for my use. using 1300 sizes. had trouble before getting 1100 ones so have stuck with 1300

Thanks pault, for your quick response.  :thumb

I have PR3's on my 1300, so that gives me a good insight.

Cheers
