ST1300 Windscreen adjustment out of sync
« on: May 19, 2013, 07:46:57 PM »
Not sure where to put this post.    I've just returned from a week long trip to Canberra (Ride Report to follow) and on the way home the adjustable screen mechanism on my ST1300 has gone crook, when I made a height adjustment in some pretty wet and horrible conditions.    It now sits crooked, with one side about 30mm higher than the other.   Both sides still operate in sync, but I've not made any further height changes, as it may be straining something.  It's a bit of a bugger as the airflow is no longer clean and it's a noisier than I like.

I do recall seeing a post about a similar issue, but have been unable to find it.  Any hints about the cause and remedy, before I start pulling stuff to bits?

I've taken off the screen and the Inner Screen Cowl, to get a look at the mechanism and see if I can see a simple problem.    It appears that both adjusters operate in sync via two cables, driven by the one actuator drive box.  I'm guessing that something has come adrift in the actuator drive box and the cables have slipped out of sync.   By testing the adjustment mechanism without the screen fitted, I've caused the difference between the two to become significantly worse.   Any hints please, before I head off to Mr Honda?

Thanks tj189.   That's a great article and just from reading it, it's quite apparent that the gear that drives the adjuster cables has failed.   That's odd, because I rarely make any adjustment to the height, having found a "sweet spot" that suits me for all conditions, and it sits there all the time.

While sorting out the parts, I've removed the actuator arms along with the screen.   She's an odd looking beast with no screen.   :'(

I regreased the tracks about 18 mts ago, and they did not look dry or gunky (technical term) when I had the front panel off a couple of days ago.   It's got me beat as to why it's failed.   However, once I've got my hands on the new adjuster and installed it, I'll strip the old drive mechanism and post a photo of what I find.

My new Windscreen Adjuster Mechanism arrived yesterday from www.ronayers.com in the USA.   Cost in Aussie Dollars, delivered to my door was $480.   I now need to find a hole in my calendar and fit the new mechanism.  In order to fit it, I need to remove the "Upper Cowl" above the headlight, which looks like a long job, as lots of other tupperware needs to come off first.     Are there any shortcuts to getting the "Upper Cowl" off?

Pulled all of the tupperware off the bike this arvo, and have fitted the new windscreen adjuster mechanism.  I still need to put most of the tupperware back in place.  Once that's done, I'll strip the old mechanism and take some photos to show just what has failed.

The job is completed and the new windscreen adjuster is in place and working fine.   Total time for me to complete the job of removing the fairings, fitting and testing the adjuster and refitting the fairings was about 4.5 hours. Most of this was spent on the fairings.    Total cost to me by ordering the part from the USA and fitting it myself was $480AUD.  The part alone from an Aussie Honda dealer was around $1,400.

The screen is moved by two cables which are pushed and pulled by a single worm gear.  This gear had worn, and allowed one of the cables to slip and thus the two sides of the screen adjuster mechanism got out of sync.

The first photo shows the old adjuster mechanism in place and ready for removal.  It's the large "H" shaped assembly.
The second photo shows the old mechanism, separated from the bike.  The cables feed into the aluminium cast gearbox in the centre, and buried deep in this gearbox is the drive gear.   The cables push and pull the sliders in the tracks on each side.   This whole part is sold as a single assembly and is what cost me $480
The third photo shows the back of the adjuster assembly.
The fourth photo shows the wear to the gear which caused the failure towards the bottom of the gear.  Towards the top there is some wear showing where the other cable interfaces with the gear.

I'm unsure of what has caused to the wear, but having a larger than standard screen may have been a contributor, as it would put more load on the mechanism when height adjustments are made at highway speeds.

More info on this mechanism can be found at  http://www.st-riders.net/index.php?topic=7125.0  which was pointed out to me by  tj189.

Well posted and documented, thanks Pete.
Also thanks for the warning about adjusting the screen, especially larger after-market screens, at higher speeds.
Most of us probably don't ride fast enough to cause the problem.   :p

Is there any consensus about what grease to use?  I am just thinking that for garage roller doors they advise don't use grease or other lubricants as they gum up and attract grit. So sprays like Inox or silicone sprays are used.

And a question out of ignorance about the ST13 - does the screen stay where it is when you turn the bike off?  Or retract and go back, or just retract?

I have no idea about the grease and after getting into the mechanism on the old unit, it would be very difficult to regrease the bits that have worn, as the gear is really buried in the gearbox. While it's a pretty simple task to grease the tracks, the cables themselves and the gear drive are not.

The screen on the 1300 stays put when the bike is turned off.  I have found a sweet spot where I'm looking over the top of the BikeQuip screen, that works well at all speeds, so it won't be doing much movement from now on.
