In South Australia a child must be eight years old before they can ride on a motorcycle.  I not sure on sidecars.

From what i have read it appears that in most states to be a pillion children must be 8 years old and reach the footpegs.
A child can be any age in a sidecar but must have an approved helmet (so they would need to have strong enough neck muscles) and be seated at all times.
so for our boy he would have to be restrained as he would not sit alone for long and I'm just not sure at what age their neck muscles would be strong enough to withstand a helmet for a period of time. might be worth asking someone.
He'll be in one as soon as he is ready  :thumbs

Pretty sure that law is actually Australia wide...bloody stupid law if you ask me... :OldMan
'Twas a case of being seen to be doing something, me thinks...as there were already laws in place that restricted little kids from riding pillion.

Oh, re sidecars, there's no age limit...  :thumbs

If you saw the injuries to young pillions we see, you would be appreciating the law saving young ones from their parents  Wot thuh  8)

Think you missed the point there, Sicman...

Like I said, there were already laws in place...such as having to have both feet on the foot rests.
Young kids were already excluded if they couldn't reach the foot pegs so why the need for an age limit?.
All the age limit did was to restrict kids that had been quite capable of riding pillion one day and then supposedly not after they introduced the new law...

No point missed - You can have a tall / large kid who can reach the pegs, but doesn't have the mental ability to comprehend how to be a pillion - i.e. leaning, gripping, hot mufflers

The age was introduced to have a national law to further reduce the chance of injury to all young pillions who can be so easily damaged in an accident  8)

Being picky here but I think the law is the same in each state as against being the one law Australian wide, that would be too sensible, But good that it is the same.

Just looking at WA laws and find that if you do your license on a trike that is all you can ride but do it on a motor bike and you can ride a bike with a sidecar, how stupid the sidecar rule is:-

Trike Motorcycle (R-E class) LAMS approved
Trikes are defined as 'a motor vehicle with 3 wheels, but do not include a 2 wheeled motor vehicle with a sidecar attached to it that is supported by a third wheel'.

A person who completes a practical riding assessment on a trike does not demonstrate sufficient balance skills for the Director General to be satisfied that they can safely ride two wheeled motorcycles.

Accordingly, the R-E or R class granted to these applicants will be restricted with condition code 31 (restricted to ride motor trikes only).

These applicants are subject to the same eligibility criteria as other motorcycle applicants (e.g. they must hold an R-E class for at least two years before applying for an R class).

The surprise I had here was I could get a motorcycle licence riding a 250cc scooter with no requirement to use gears but got a licence to ride a 'manual' motocycle.  After twevle months I could apply for an open licence (no test) and suddenly ride the kwaka I now have.  I was worried I wouldn't be used to the clutch and gears but it wasn't a problem.  The only thing I took getting used to was having a foot brake.  Whilst I benefitted from it, I still don't think it's right that you can get a manual licence despite being tested in an automatic.

There's no logic in many of our laws...

Someone behind a desk is justifying his job by pushing through solutions to problems that don't exist.
The 8 year old pillion one is just one example.
8 years isn't a magic number that somehow makes them capable. Kids are riding bicycles and mini bikes well before that age so they obviously have the mental capacity, it's not rocket science to be able to sit on the back of a motorcycle.

Another example, which was pushed through at the same time as the age limit one was the banning of transporting animals such as dogs etc on the tank of motorcycles. Was there an actual problem??? No...

Then there was the law they tried to introduce that would ban lane filtering/splitting, supposedly because it was so dangerous. It was only that it was worded so badly that it failed to be passed. As we all know now, it's now legal to filter pretty much Australia wide, amazing seeing as it was supposedly so dangerous not too many years back...lol.

Yet another which makes absolutely no sense to me is the requirement (in Queensland) to hold a car licence before you can get a motorcycle licence....cos driving is so similar to riding a bike...lol

Then of course there's the issues that West Aussie Glen & Bodø mentioned...  >:()

Perhaps I had better step down from my soapbox now... :whistle  :hijacked  :grin  :Stirpot

It would be interesting to know from maybe some of the medical professionals in this group what age they feel a helmet can be worn by a child safely.  I know the skull bones don't fuse together until around 2 years so wouldn't even think about it until after that.
If you have any advice maybe pop me a message.
All my medical training was adult based so i am clueless when it comes to children  ;-*

...booked it!

... but not a specific location.

... we wanted an OzSTOC cloth patch to sew to OzDog's cold weather jacket for future events...

Hey Mate, hope your enjoying the NR... We're guessing the Big4... and we booked an 'OzDog friendly' van site, because we can't do a week on the STeed anymore, to get down there and back... if we've got the right town, but wrong venue - no biggie really... Cheers, John&Kate (& OzDog).
