ST1300 front seat
« on: July 02, 2013, 10:56:00 PM »
Does anyone know of a front seat for a 1300 that needs a new home? I am talking to a few fibreglass fabricators and want to try and extend/change the base area while still keeping the mount points intact, then get it padded and covered by a professional trimmer. Aiming to get something to sit "IN" rather than "on" and not get pushed into the tank all day. Similar to some Harley seats I have had.  Can be an absolute wreck as I am just going to strip it and start fresh. Willing to pay a reasonable $.

Hi Digs Have you tried mounting your seat in the middle or high setting at the front and pushng the rear of the seat into the lowest setting? This has the effect of flattening the seat out making for a lot more comfortable riding position and therefore allow you to cover a lot more kilometres each day

Cheers

Digs, Tony's suggestion is a good one and a number of us have done this and  found that it flattens out the seat, making it far more comfortable on the long hauls.

Thanks guys, I will give that a shot and see how it goes. Someone else suggested that a while ago and I had a quick look at it, but it obviously needed a tad more force to get it into position than I gave it. I would still like to have the seat rebuilt, maybe with a softer foam and a cover with a bit more "give". Sheepskin is good for shorter hauls, and the good old Airhawk works better on the longer runs. I even tried both at once, but felt about 2" higher! I will give it a shot this weekend and report on the difference when I get a chance. Cheers.

Yeah I jammed mine down into that last rung. Big difference, that and the airhawk works fine

I bent the rear tabs a bit, which makes it easier to set the seat in the "non-standard" position.

Like Pete, I bent the tabs forward with a pair of pliers so there is minimal force needed to get it to slot in to the next step down. Easy peasy.
I still use an Airhawk for longer days but you don't slide into the tank as this little trick definitely tilts the seat back somewhat.
Getting wind in my hair while I still have some.

From the sound of it, this is a popular way to go. I will also adjust the tabs a touch and see where it gets me. Unfortunately work only allows me to tinker on the weekends, so at least I know what I will be doing this weekend. Thanks for all the input. :thumbsup

:thumbs Thanks guys, it definitely makes a difference. Went around the block Saturday (400K) and didn't end up buried into the tank as usual, and the different angle of the seat alters the pressure points on my delicate oversized arse. I might end up getting some softer foam down the track, but this will do for now. :beer

Hi Diggs,
I paid for:
Airhawk, Modified OEM seat (like what you are thinking of doing), Sheepskin and wasted my $$$.

SAVE your $$$ and purchase a Seargant front seat from Riders Edge USA $399. incl shipping.

You will not regret it!
it sounds like a lot of money and the seat initially feels hard, but you can ride 4 hrs w/o any aches or hot spots on your  :butt
