As a newbie to the R1200 i'm curious to find out the rough fuel range in touring mode.

Welcome aboard, mine has a 25 l tank computer tells me it runs 4.4.
If the odometer is correct its actually 5.1 on tour . Giving me 400 ks with 3 l left. And of course runs 98 only.

I see the manual states that the usable fuel capacity is 27 litres with a 4 litre reserve.
I assume that means the fuel warning light would come on after 23 litres.
98 RON could be an issue out the back of beyond....

Duncan, the 1200 is an in line E/W 4 cyl. 98 only, but if I was stuck I`d use what ever`s available. Yours being the boxer may take a lesser octane, have to check your book for that one ....
Interesting , I have an X5 4.4 V8 petrol, that, by the book will be ok with any of fuels. Go figure! So it gets the odd tank of premium but makes no difference with the engine power , as it still goes like .........k

My K1600GT is running at 4.8l/100km. Can’t remember when I last reset the fuel economy.

With a Can-Am :Spyder emoticon, obviously need a BMW one as well with the number of members having .to swap to that marque. Maybe BMW will introduce a model with the ST prefix?

Currently away with limited web access. Nice to see a Beemer thread. I have averaged 4.7 over 45k with 91 and 95. My bike is tuned for 91.

I didn't know you could do that. Certainly removes one of the objections I had to owning one.

I like to think that I’m doing just a little bit for the environment by using at least PULP in my vehicles. The K1600GT runs on 98RON and the Subaru uses PULP.

Having said that, I’m totally NON judgemental on those who chose otherwise.
Just something to think about.

A mate who has a 2016 RT recently told me that these bike can no longer be tuned for 91RON fuel by the dealer. There has been such a protest from owners who can't get 98 in many remote places, that BMW are going to modify the on board software via a routine update to enable 91RON again.
On a recent 3,500 km trip, I had the "Engine Fault" light come on three times in three days, and she went into limp mode. :eek As soon a I stopped and turned the engine off and on again the warning light disappeared, and for the last week it did not happen again. I have just booked my R1200RT in for a 50,000km service, so they are going to "read the fault codes" to get to the bottom of what was happening.

Having had a proper read through the owner's manual i have discovered that in the case of my 2006 at least,it's fine to run 91 or 95 when 98 isn't available.
I have discovered most Caltex/Woolworths outlets in the metro area in brisbane don't sell 98.
The other alternative is hideously expensive Shell or BP 98RON.
I have managed to get some Sw-Motec bar risers from sydney which will be fitted before heading off next week for Perth/Tassie.

I run my 2018 RT on 95 exclusively, never had any issues.
Love the bike, any reservations I initially had eg rough at idle have long since faded. Must however get a second fob, it worries me that I might loose it.

Rather than pay for a Beemer one, you could investigate a locksmith making a copy for you.

I have just fitted a Cyclops LED Headlight Kit, and what a challenge that was. It was necessary to strip the front end of the bike to remove the headlight assembly, just to access to the back of the headlight unit to be able to install the globes and other bits and bobs.

I bought mine through Adventure Bike Australia https://adventurebikeaustralia.com.au/product-category/brands/cyclops/ after finding that they had some Cyclops products in stock, but they had to get in inspecially from Cyclop USA for me.

The left side swithcblock on my BMW R1200RT has lots of buttons and controls, and is very difficult to navigate by feel at night, particularly when wearing thick winter gloves. After some brainstorming I came up with a innovative solution. I made a bracket from ss that fixes to the back of my CB mount with velcro, and a small fishing float chem light stick slides into a holder. This illuminates the switch block for hours with a soft green light and does not shine in my eyes. The concept could easily be adapted to work on a ST.
I posted this on a USA BMW forum and was told it was an example of "Redneck Engineering". I have seen Redneck Engineering before and felt a little bit insulted. :grin

My 2012 r1200r is now gaining fuel as I ride. Left home with 180klm left in the tank got home with 243km remaining :cuss. It changes as you ride but obviously I have no idea how much fuel I have left or how far I can go on a tank :think1. Time will tell :popcorn
