Title: Maintenance Day at Greencan's place (Sunbury)
Post by: Greencan on June 27, 2014, 09:40:40 AM
Mornin' All,

During the get together at the Tungamah pub I made mention of maybe having a maintenance day to share a few ideas about DIY 'tasks' on your bike. The idea being I would have an 1100 on the bench and AJ1300 would have his 1300 over to help answer any queries, how to's etc.

The venue will be at my place in Sunbury and we'll have a gold coin BBQ lunch.

I haven't forgotten, it's just that an unexpected trip for moi back to hospital had thrown our travel plans for this year around a tad, so the original idea of doing this in Sept. will now be in Oct. / Nov. when I know I will be at home. So sorry about the delay, but I will post up a date soon.

Cheers the can :-)

Woot... maybe I'll finally figure out where the oil goes. Is there oil?

As my bike is currently under new bike warranty l do not do the work on it, however would like to attend the maintenance day with an eye on the future and the maintenance works it will require.

Not in the 1300s.  They're a factory-sealed unit.  Everything else needs it.

Greetings All...

Well now back home for a few weeks before we beetle off again for a short time so I can reasonably write a date into stone....and that date will be the 25th October 2014...from 10:00

As this a bit of a first the plan will be not to take on too much and not get into difficult and time consuming problem solving or how to's.

So with this in mind I will have an ABS/TCS/CBS ST1100 on the bench that will be due for a timing belt replacement (among other things), and I plan only to prepare it for that and run through the very basics of accessing, preparing and servicing at this time, no more.

As I know very little about ST1300's, AJ and Brian, who both maintain their bikes, will be here (work pending), in helping out with any 1300 queries.

I will put on a BBQ and a few soft drinks.

If you plan on coming please send me a personal message via this forum with a mobile contact and I will text you my address and will be able send group texts to keep all up to date.

Cheers, Dick :-)

Looks like I'll be at the Spaghetti Rally (http://www.motoguzziclubvic.asn.au/Spaghetti%20Rally.html (http://www.motoguzziclubvic.asn.au/Spaghetti%20Rally.html)) that weekend, and so I will most likely miss this one.

I was looking forward to finding out why I have so many parts left over each time I work on the Mighty ST13.

Cheers,  Michael

Morning All...

Chaps if your planning on turning up on the 25th, please send a personal message with a mobile number I can reply to.  :thumb

So far I have Gary, J, and Nigel...I will text you my address in the coming weeks, as I am presently aware from home (neighbours in charge), don't worry about lunch as I'll sort something out...and as mentioned before the plan is to keep things basic to kick things off to see how it goes.

I should have an 1100 on the bench that's due for a timing belt, carb balance, stanchion oil replacement, etc etc.

Cheers, the can :-)

I could nearly make this except for the Greenwell NSW RTE. I will be back in Victoria that week regardless, probably in the car for once.

I just want to thank Dick and his wife for all their hospitality today and the maintenance idea is a really useful one for us newbies to these 1100's and think this should be something we should do regularly, it certainly helped me today.  But would you believe it, I ride away (exhaust sounds great (definitely going to need some ear plugs now) how did it sound from your end?) and get to the bike shop and find that all my taillight globes need replacing.

Not knowing which ones to get I had to buy two types and looking at the manual made it a 10 minute job.

Thanks again, and hope to see you all again soon.

Mate your tail lights were out at Blackwood RTE. I just thought it due to you fuse problem you had. That and I forgot to tell you by the time I got home.

You just can't get the staff can you...  :nahnah

I wasn't sure if the globes were one for brakes and one for the lights, but I was convinced that I used to have two lights and got brighter when the brakes were on...

All sorted though...

Morning J et al...

Glad that you got something out of it J  :thumb and really great to see you all again  :runyay

Well, the repair time for the ST I used for the day got protracted further this morning after I removed the cush blocks  :'(...

...the distance between the red arrow should be a tolerance fit to the flange drive's 65mm...this damaged wheel hub measures 63.4mm to 64mm....it neither round nor a tolerance fit for the drive flange.

THIS IS CRITICAL! because until it is repaired, all future replacement cush drive rubbers AND the alloy blocks WILL fail prematurely!

The gouge marks within the red circles are from direct contact of the alloy blocks AFTER the complete failure of the rubber cushes...on this bike the dealer had re-used the alloy blocks and had inserted 1 or more USED rubber blocks and fitted a new flange drive. The alloy blocks I have removed, have corresponding witness marks to those gouges within the wheel...I will be unable to refurbish these blocks like the ones I showed people.

I may begin a separate thread on this repair latter.

Cheers, the can :-)

Morning and many THANKS to Richard for the days learning curve.Very informal approach to the bikes details that I think all would have walked away with some better understanding of how this machine fits together. One thing is for sure that when I need a new rear Tyre I will be taking off the wheel myself to check over the drive-line and hopefully stop something before it starts, as is pictured above. If we can get another one together I`ll be there. Thanks again.. Nice catering toooooooooooo. :wht11

What a brilliant day.
Ella's catering, Richards sharing his Honda knowledge, the informal / very relaxed setting, all excellent.
Will be re checking my last rear wheel tyre change when we get back from the beach, a new front tyre to be fitted sooner rather than later and now know what that occasional small knock in the front suspension is all about. !!
Also follow up on the preload adjuster - the day was wall to wall gold plate - Thankyou.
Cheers

I agree with all the above comments. Thanks Richard and Ella for your hospitality and catering. We all had a great day and learnt lots of useful information.  Whether we do  bike maintenance ourselves or through a dealer or mechanic we have learnt, stuff to look out for or to check as well. I hope this type of event can be regular. And I have to clean up my shed.

Anyway, I think we will do it again in the New Year :thumb...I will keep you all post on just how the Final drive / wheel on the demo ST1100 turns out...which may include a repair to the wheel I have not done before, but really would like to give it a go...stay tuned.

In the mean time ride safe and perhaps catch up at the next RTE...and with a specific task on someone's bike from the group...thank you all again, :clap...and a special thank U to Brian C who helped out and came down with the best maintained ST1300 on the forum :clap
