Spotwalla changes?
« on: September 16, 2020, 06:34:00 PM »
This just popped up in my FB News Feed.

Quote
In one form or another, SpotWalla has been thriving for the past 12 years. And it's time for an upgrade. A major upgrade. In fact, an entirely new SpotWalla.

A few issues are driving this. First, we've accumulated some seldom-used bloat and we're going to get rid of it. Second, it's time for a technology upgrade. And lastly, we're preparing for SpotWalla to eventually become a paid-for service in late 2021.

The app owners and I have already been hard at it developing the new SpotWalla. It's my intention to solicit a few power users to start testing the new site sometime in late October. But honestly, there's still a lot to do yet before there's enough functionality to start testing.

I know 2020 has been a peculiar and abnormal year in so many ways. It's not over either. But we're going to do something cool before this year is over.

More information to come as I know it.  Y'all be safe out there and have fun.

Jason

That'll be interesting to see.  I don't mind paying for it and have donated in the past.  Last time they changed the maps they use however left me a little disappointed.  I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

If I stop paying the ridiculous fee SPOT want and use a free app I might be able to afford to give more to Jason.
The fact is, I could never understand his willingness to put so much time and skill into Spotwalla in exchange for donations.

I think I have just discovered what I've been doing wrong with the new Spotwalla.

When it was introduced, there was a temporary new Bubbler created to be compatible with the new Spotwalla.

When the phone locks, the new Bubbler turns off until the phone is unlocked and the app reopened.

I've tunerd on Bubbler Pro this evening, so it will be interesting to see if it works tomorrow, as it is staying active when the phone is locked.

I tried that after having some other issues.  The new spotwalla doesn't get any date from Bubbler Pro.  Well it didn't for me.

Yeah, I just tried sending a custom test message from Bubbler Pro. No good.

Sent one from New Bubbler and it worked.

Might have to guve Bubbler some feedback through the app store.

Wow a Support email to Spotwalla before going to bed last night.

I woke up a bit after 3 for a wee walk, and checked my phone.

I had a reply.

I've applied the settings below, my battery was being optimised, and it was set for locations only when the app was running.

so we'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Hey, Gary.

Check these settings on your phone. They will help ensure Bubbler is able to run in the background.

---------------

1.  In settings on the phone (drag down from the clock and click on the gear icon).  Click on "Apps".  Click on "Bubbler GPS New".  Click "Permissions", click "Location", set to "Allow all the time".

2.  Click "back" twice on the phone, so that you are in "App Info" for Bubbler GPS New.  This can vary by phone, but you are looking for something that says "Battery".  You DO want to allow background activity (allow tracking when the screen is off or Bubbler GPS is hidden).  "Optimize battery usage" should say "Not Optimized".

----------------

Let me know if that doesn't work for you.

Thanks

Jason
