Doesn't start in gear
« on: August 02, 2015, 09:23:03 PM »
My ST 1100 has just started to not start in gear. The clutch is in, stand up, emergency engine kill off. Won't start. Put it in Neutral and it starts fine.
Could it be some electrical issue with the gear sensor?
Anyone had something like this? Any answer?

If your clutch switch is faulty this can happen.

So at what age does this "old enough to know better" kick in?

is the fix an easy one??  As mine has been doing this for a while now and I want to get it fixed as I had a bit of an embarrassing moment the other day.

Filterd my way up the front of the lights .... no problems but for some strange reason I stalled it on take off and because I had to get it into N I was fluffing around with the gears and the cars were understandably a bit pissed off.

The clutch switch is an easy fix, the sidestand switch is easy but takes a little longer.

Test the switches first before removing..

Cheers Brock,

Has any one done a 'how to' by any chance?  Maybe I'll try the SToc pages as well.

I may not be searching under the right search criteria either.

Cheers

Is there a way of eliminating which one it could be? and a how to would be good too.

The easiest is the clutch switch: just pull the wires off or better still make sure the wires haven't come off.

The clutch switch (same as brake light switch) has tiny return spring in it. Quite possible that spring has broken/stuck. The switch is held in place with one screw so it's easy to remove and test the switch.

This'll give you an idea of what the switch looks like. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Clutch-Lever-Switch-Honda-ST-1100-S-Pan-European-1100cc-1995-/151719969291?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item235337020b

Thanks everyone, it was in fact a loose connection. Crimped the female connector slightly and 'hey presto' it's all good.

Clutch switch or sidestand?     The info might be useful in the future for someone else.  :thumb

It was the clutch switch.
