Driveway / storage problems.
« on: March 27, 2013, 04:31:08 PM »
Hi all this is Sjh. At 62 and with a steep problem driveway I am seriously looking to move from my wine red 1997 (1st reg 1998) ST1100 (original 27k and very good condition) to something easier to manage!!!  An outright sale or alternate trade or swap for hopefully a HONDA  at same or less value (with cash difference either way) would be fine but while larger or smaller engine size would be ok it would need to be lower in the saddle  I would expect a "fair" similar value to swap but to do so I need to know a realistic price range for my bike. My bike has givi top box and original panniers, woolen seat cover, cb radio and wired helmets, and has always been garaged and covered when not being used. Any fair dinkum thoughts as to the value range would be appreciated.  :dred11

That's a fairly old ST, and there are quite a lot for sale in the $5000 range.  Yours has remarkably low mileage for its age- there are bikes on this forum that do those kays every year.

What bike do you think would be lower?  ST1100s are not very tall.  If your situation is challenging for an ST, maybe you should look at a Suzuki Bergman.  Although they are a scooter, they are Maxi-scooters, with 650cc engines.  They have a large amount of storage space, and being quite low, are favoured by those needing something a bit less demanding than a motorcycle.  I've ridden in a group with them and they keep up and manoeuvre very well.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Keep in mind that bikes that are lower in the saddle often have wider seats so you gain little as far as getting your feet on the ground is concerned.

Hi Biggles I think a Honda 750 maybe Deauville would be easier. At 5foot 8 and shrinking I am on tip toes straddling the ST1100 and accessing the steepest block is my prob.

Was going to advise you could sell the house to keep the ST.....but then I see you live at Scotts, so retract that idea......

I have a 96 ST11 with a slightly lowered Moorehouse seat. I can flat foot easily, and I am the same height (but leg/body ratio may vary)

I took my stock seat to marine trimmer, told him to leave 25mm, now I am flat footed and I stand 5'7.

Thnx for the feedback Yorkie. I am similar height and thnx to Brad now have a solution on the way doing the same thing.  Cant believe I have been so long in getting a fix, mainly thru not getting off my backside sooner. This is a terrific club and a great source of info!!

Sorry, have not been online much lately.  I bought the seat from a former member. It is only about 1/2 an inch lower but is still very broad and supportive, and not at all thinner in terms of support.  Moorehouse is well known so a search should turn up contacts.
