ST1300 Manual Updates
« on: December 04, 2014, 09:27:27 AM »
I picked this up on the USA site and the creator suggested I post it here for the Aussie STOwners.

Revisions (Error Corrections) to ST 1300 Service Manual

http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?142568-Revisions-(Error&s=8964ae626a88b93b394103d2b47bd558

My update was to 2012 and is identical to Michaels 2014 updates.

Hope this is of help to others.

Thanks Aussieboy.   I'm guessing that many of us are using the 2003 manual, so the updates will be helpful.

And just for completeness, could anyone who has a haynes or similar aftermarket manual check whether these updates are in them, as it would be safer to use these updates with those manuals as well.

I bought a genuine 2010 Manual that includes the updates to 2013.

Not sure about the update pages being a breach. They are just correcting errors in a manual you have already purchased. My genuine 2010 also came with the updates to the date of purchase. What would be good would be the publisher registering purchasers and updating the manuals when errors were found.
The moderator on the US site has no issues with the material being available and they are far more cautious there.

I'm not too worried about the updates, but I couldn't seem to find anyone over here who actually owns a genuine manual. Most seemed to be using the 2003 PDF that was created by scanning the paper version at about 300dpi.

It's good to hear that someone else has a genuine version.  :thumbsup

I got my son to bring mine from the States, Think it cost about $70. Recently I needed a manual for my Vstrom and was directed to an online manual site.

The ST1300 is c currently available at a discounted price of $35 plus postage at the moment - go to this link:

http://www.service-shop-repair-manual.com/2003-2014-honda-st1300-st1300a-st1300p-st1300pa-part-61mcs09-service-shop-repair-manual/

I received excellent service when purchasing the manual for my VStrom.

Not sure about the update pages being a breach.
Hi All:

I'm the person who posted the original scans of the update pages at the American site.

I don't think that any breach of the spirit of the copyright law occurs from posting these error corrections.  My rationale is that the posted documents are useless unless the downloader has already purchased the complete manual, and also that I think Honda (the publisher and copyright holder) will want to ensure that these error corrections are disseminated as widely as possible.

Hello:

A very late reply to the above post:

I'm the person who originally posted the images of the Service Manual updates on the North American site.  At the time I did that, I was working for an aircraft manufacturer as the Flight Safety Manager, and our practice as manufacturer was to copyright our service manuals, but permit distribution of errata corrections without enforcing copyright on the corrections.  The operative word is 'errata', meaning, if we published new material to supplement an existing manual or to define a new procedure, we claimed copyright on that, but if the update was just an error correction, we didn't enforce copyright.

Not enforcing copyright on errata publications was in our best interest - far better that end users get corrections to our mistakes than carry out a repair or maintenance procedure improperly and then suffer an accident or system failure as a result of an error in our publications.

I didn't check with Honda before promulgating the error corrections in my original post on ST Owners.com, but I am pretty sure that Honda will have no objections to this material being published for the following reasons:

1) It's of no value to anyone who does not have the original publication, because none of the amendments describe how to completely carry out any given procedure.

2) It does not contain any new material, only error corrections.

3) It's clearly in Honda's best interests that these error corrections are widely disseminated.

Since posting the document several years ago, neither I or the ST Owners.com administrators have heard anything from Honda.

Michael

This last post is irrelevant to my statement.
As far as I am aware, the posted pdf version of the complete 2003 manual is still in breach of copyright.

This is a reference to what Stinky Pete said in his post:

"Thanks Aussieboy.   I'm guessing that many of us are using the 2003 manual, so the updates will be helpful.
