I just put Ruby on her centre stand (needed to test the hernia).
While standing on my head checking the oil, I noticed there is a smaller, inner spring on the stand. The outer is connected at both ends, but the inner bottom hook is not engaged.
Can someone check theirs and see if that inner spring is hooked to the same point as the large outer one, please?
Or what is it attached to? Is it a spare? (Always carry a spare, I reckon) :grin

The inner spring is attached both ends to the same mount points as the outer spring

Thanks for that, Brad. I'll hook it up. Didn't want to do it without checking in case I broke something. I deduce it's a safety back-up so the stand doesn't fall and drag if the primary one failed.
I wonder when the inner one came unhooked. I'll keep an eye on it when I pulled her up in future.

I have a similar issue.
Sometime last year I noticed that the main spring was not attached at one end. No way could I get that back on. So I removed it and noticed that the main spring was bent. Not sure how that happened, may have been like that since I had it. I ordered a new spring which as yet has to be fitted. Relying on smaller back up spring at the moment. It can wait until I the fork seals get done at the bike shop.

It's stating the obvious, but did you try with the centre stand retracted? The spring is under less tension then.

Tried that and lost some skin as the tool slipped off the spring.

I learned a great trick for stretching a tension spring, to get it back on the hooks without too much difficulty.
Stick one end of the spring in a vice, push it right over to one side, and poke a washer in one of the gaps between the coils.
Push in the opposite direction and stick a washer in the opposite gap
Continue to do this, adding washers until the spring is long enough to enable you to hook both ends on the hooks.
When you extend the spring by putting the centre-stand all the way down, all the washers fall out.
