Title: Fitting rear PR4 on ST1300 - it's broken me
Post by: BigTed on February 15, 2015, 03:30:19 PM
Well, I posted a video up before Christmas showing my DIY tyre change of the front - off with a PR3 and on with a PR4. In the end, I thought it was pretty easy... and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Today, I attempted the rear.... epic fail  :|||| . I'm sitting here knackered having spent vast amount of energy trying to get the sucker off: breaking the bead took about 3 times as long as the front; I managed to get the 1st side of the tyre off the rim, but just couldn't get the 2nd off - another pair of hands would have made it a lot easier, but they aren't around.

This task was just removing the PR3 - it made me think a brand new PR4 will be harder still and I'm conscious of not damaging the rims. So, next week I'm off to pay someone to do it.

Rob.
ps. I should have changed the rear a long time ago... Now at 38,500 km it's definitely not legal.  :spank

Looks like legality was the least of your problems.
For the past 10,000 kays I'd say you were dicing with disaster grip-wise!

The rears can be hard to do on ST style bikes as they are so stiff. Even with a tyre changing stand and the right tool, you have to put in a sharp effort to muscle it on. The tyre distorts and looks terrible, but they all do it to some degree.

The only way my tyre fitter could get the rears on in the Po ast was to put his tyre warmers on for at least 40 mins.then they slipped on nicely.

Mine get done on the car tyre changer down at the local tyre dealer.........not a problem for them to get the old one off and then slap a bit of lubrication (whatever it is) on for the new tyre.

If I got 38,500 kms out of a tyre I think I would frame it and hang it in the lounge room.
I can't even see any canvas; that's how I know my tyre needs replacing. If you don't believe me ask Saaz.

The old one looks OK as long as it doesn't rain . . On the 1300, I'm lucky to get 12-15k out of a rear tyre . . On the 1100 I think 8-9k is great . .

The LUBRICANT gentle folk is just a good amount of detergent and water so as to make the beads
on both old and new slippery.
This will make things a lot easier  :fp :fp

I bought a tub of tyre paste ages ago. It makes fitting a lot easier, and it also acts as a sealer when it dries.

The old rear (38,500km??) could be framed and used for an "idiot rider" award.

I wore out two rear Bridgestone Exedra radials riding around Australia in 2014 and rarely get more than 10,000km out of any rear tyres up here, so am thinking the hotter roads must cause higher wear rates.

John
