Wanna see a PR3 on a ST13 with 29,000kms on it?....
« on: November 21, 2013, 08:26:08 PM »
I kid you not. A new one is going on this week - but I GUARANTEE you I have had this tyre on for over 29,000km!

Here is the rear PR2 with 21,000kms on it (also being changed this weekend with a PR3)...

Cheers, Diesel

You might have cribbed the last coupla thou there, but well done on getting that mileage out of them.  And it's not like STella is lugging a midget around, if you get my drift.    :grin
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

That good tyre wear, Diesel.
I've just had my Shinko rear tyre replaced after 19047 kms. I'm happy with that mileage as it includes towing a heavy (230 kg) trailer from Canberra to the Maryborough AGM.
I replaced it with another Shinko for $130.
And before Biggles reminds everyone - I do have big stomach muscles and 135 kg TARE.

Looks like you've got every last km out of these tyres - probably more than I would've.

Best I've got on the CB1300 was around 15,000km on the rear with an Avon Storm, this with a pillion and towing the trailer for around 10,000km.  Other tyres around 10,000km to 12,000km (various Bridgestone Battlax and Michelin PR1 & PR2, worst was 8,000 Michelin Pilot Power).

Anyway, what pressures are you running?

Truth is - the rear had been losing slight pressure for a few weeks. When I left for Bundaberg this last time (650km round trip), the rear had a lot more tread on it. If you've ever ridden with a slighty under inflated tyre, you'll know that you can scrub thousands of kms off its life - which is what happened here. I had to top up the air 3 times on the way home and consequently scrubbed out the remainder of its life.

@Williamson
Hi mate - tyre pressures are an interesting subject. On MY GAUGE I run 42psi F and 44psi R - but YOUR GAUGE may indicate different readings - so you have to find the sweet spot between handling and mileage and THAT is the CORRECT PRESSURE. Other factors like the climate and road surfaces in your area, the way YOU ride, how you load your bike, how twisty or straight your roads are, and tyre brand/manufacturer all influence what cold pressures you start off with. So I'll reiterate... you have to find the sweet spot between handling and mileage and THAT is the CORRECT PRESSURE.

Have a quick look at this post which talks about this very thing....

Boy Diesel that is the best tyre wear I have ever seen. I replaced a set of PR 3s at 17000 on my previous FJR1300 as I was going on the Snowy ride, reckon they had 1 to 2 thou in them and I was very happy .i check my pressures at least one a fortnight and run 42 - 42 . Won't ever beat you though!

I cannot believe you blokes....don't you ever go around corners...iti s a SPORTS touring bike.

I can only get between 9000 and 11000 klms per tyre no matter which brand I use,  all my mates (fellowriders) are the same..

My ST 1100 did 160000klms and my ST 1300 has done 170000klms so Tyres have cost me a bundle over the years...BUT...thats what they were designed to do..corner hard and hang on for me...

It seems that some of these blokes may only be getting about 15-20,000km of "legal" front tyre wear, as the pictures are of tyres that have well below the required tread depth. On my previous bikes, if my ratio of "commuting" versus "leisure" riding got too high, I ended up with the sides worn off the front tyres and legal tread in the centre. I can usually get 12-15,000km out of front tyres, but struggle to make 8-10,000km on a rear tyre, as I usually tow a Classic Ultralite trailer on longer trips like the BDR to the Red Centre in 2011 & 2012.

I'm going on the BDR Around Australia in July/August, so am really keen to get information on realistic/legal tyre wear. So far, four tyre outlets have responded with their recommendations. One is for the Pirelli Angel GT, two are for the Michelin PR4 GT and the other that I'll probably go with is for the Bridgestone Exedra Max http://www.bridgestone.co.uk/moto/ranges/exedra-max/e-max/ as we'll have lots of straights and very few "sports" corners to play in.

Has anyone tried the Exedra tyres, yet?

Diesel, that is great mileage from a set of tyres, and they are showing very even wear and no scalloping on the front.   Well done    :thumb

In light of your results think I'll have play with tyre pressures on mine.   I have PR3's and use 42 & 42.  They currently have 15,000km on them, and I'm averaging around 18,000 from a set, but might try 42 & 44 and wee what happens.

Back in the early days of the 1100 police bikes they came in with Exerdera tyres as standard and Qld was not allowed to change them. They were a lesser spec tyre than the Bridgestone Battleaxe tyres.

Not sure where they fit into the order these days.

If there is a suggestion that Diesel 'takes it easy' while out enjoying the fresh air, You'd be wrong. I know he will be too modest to correct that assumption.

I'm currently running Dunlops and have 17250 on my front tyre, and it's still legal, and I'll get at least another 1000km out of it before it's no longer legal, and very likely 3000 before it really needed changing, rear has just under 11000 and I could probably get another 3 - 4000 before it's no longer legal. I've got a new set of Mitchlin PR 2s sitting in the garage and they'll be going on in another 1000km. I always run 42 front and 42 rear!  I wish I had PR 3s waiting to go on but I brought the 2s out from the US prior to PR 3s being readily available!

Im all for getting the moST out of things tyres included....but ....I think I left the last set on the bike too long.
My new Cobras are ticking all the boxes .... The standout is the increased ride comfort... The ride is noticably smoother.

This is amazing mileage. I am on my 3rd rear PR3. Previous 2 have managed 16,000 km and been smooth on the right side and past the wear markers on the left at this mileage. First front was also smooth at 16,000km, the current one looks like I will get another 5,000 from it. The original Bridgestone 012 did 12,000 rear and 20,000 front. The BT 023's did fairly much the same. Was looking for a PR4GT's, but they are not available for another couple of weeks apparently (or is the supplier just trying to clear all the PR3's first?). Was considering the Pirelli Angel GT's, but have seen tests published which show considerable difference between the Michelin and Angel in wet weather braking.
I have always run 42 psi front and rear and check before every ride. What pressure are you guys running to get these unbelievable mileages?

Take a run down to GC Motorcycles they have them in stock according to their website. It's probably one of the best places north of the city to get bike tyres.

OK - I'll claim the OzSToc record!  30,000km and still going on the front!  :nahnah

Is this a new world record for PR3s on an ST1300?

That's where I got my PR3. They do not have PR4's for the ST although they do have some sizes in stock. My usual retailers advised that the distributor did not have any available. If anyone else needs a PR3 urgently GC'S still had 3 left last week.
