Hi Guys,
Motorcycle marshals are required for a BWA event on Sunday 19th April, the Dams Challenge is considered one of the worlds 50th toughest cycle races with over 2500 cyclists expected to take part.
I'm looking for motorcycle marshals around 15 to volunteer their time for the day to help out with the event, it has been agreed that each marshal shall receive $70 each to reimburse them for their fuel for the day.
It's a great day out, starting at South Perth and with 2 races going on at the same time, the 3 dam and the 5 dam challenge.
We start early at 5.30 to be ready for the cyclists to leave around 6 am, coffee is available to wake you up if needed, there are water stops on route and a meal at the end.
The day runs for 12 hours so it's a long time in the saddle.
Please confirm if your interested or if you will be participating.
Thanks
:wht11
PS: all kinds of bikes welcome not just ST owners
-
I am there , as usual. It would be great to get a bunch of STs there, as it qould reduce the load a lot.
-
My thoughts exactly Brock, I know Pezzz and Wombat are interested but it would be great to see others there, if only for one event .
:wht11
-
Need to catch up with you when I get back to go over everything. I think Wombat wad thinking of a mid week Dome ride down your way.
-
19th April is RTE to Quindaning.
-
I guess a few of us wont be going to Quindaning.
-
Went to Quindanning last year, there was only me, scarp and Hoffy but we had a good trip.
:wht11
-
I guess a few of us wont be going to Quindaning.
Yes I have committed or should that be committed to the marshalling. :grin
Coffee to hear what is required instead of turning up with no idea :eek
When Pezzz gets back from enjoying himself we may organize drinks
Cheers
-
I get back from up north on the 10th April, so we'll get together for a coffee one day any run over things.
:wht11
-
Put me down for this one, it sounds like a good time.
:blu13
-
It is, do you want to meet up for a coffee prior to get the low down?
:wht11
-
Sounds like dome when you get back. :beer
Need caffiene :grin
:wht11
-
Which branch would you prefer, Mandurah is close to me but I don't mind meeting halfway, will Brock be attending?
It would be nice if some other riders who might be interested meet with us.
:wht11
-
Mandurah is a bit far for a coffee, byt some where in the middle would be ok.
Would need to be next week end tho, as during the week is a bit hard as I work.. ( well I turn up anyway.)
-
Cockburn has a dome, doesn't it, that way we could meet around 5-6pm so you could meet up after work, just need to work out a day, when I get home my wife is away so I have to sort kids out. Probably best if we leave the day till when I get home, are we ok for venue and time?
:wht11
-
Hi Bloodbikes, i am not sure what is required from the marshalls how ever i would be interested in helping out and it would be good to see lots ST's out and about!!!! :thumbs
Cheers Chris :blk13

Chris,
Basically,
we circulate around the course, looking for any one that may need assistance, mechanical or medical. With the dams challenge, the main problems are blown tubes (We carry spare tubes, tyres and CO2 cartridges ( rider gets billed for them later)) and dehydration and the odd bump and bruise. Hopefully we have an event free day. We should have extra water to carry for the dams.
There are basic first aid kits supplied, and reflective vest if you dont have one
-
Hi Brock,
Sounds like a great way to spend a sunday and a great way to give a little back! please count me in.
cheers Chris
-
Blood bikes (Peter) will let you know what you need to do, to register with BWA shortly I'm sure.
Its going to be a long day, departing river foreshore around 6AM, and returning around 6PM.
-
Thanks Brock.
-
Hey guys, check out BWA website, a lot of information can be found here.

Hi wombat, Pezzz, Malcolm and Sir Chilly and anyone else's who's interested in helping out, BWA have asked that you go and register at the site below.

This needs to be done ASAP.
Thanks
:wht11

I have just completed forms :CB--
Cheers now coffee
:wht11
-
Thanks Peter, all done :thumbsup
Cheers Chris :blk13
-
Done :-)
-
C'mon Malcolm, only you left to fill the form in, I'm approaching my local Ullysses group on Saturday to see if anyone's interested.
:wht11
-
Some of us work for a living buddy.
-
Form done for the 19th.
:blu13
-
Well done all, just need to schedule a day for a informal meet, obviously some people work for a living so what kind of time is best for everyone?
:wht11
-
At this stage, I think Saturday is free, unless my strobes arrive. Then I would have some drilling and wiring to do.
-
A question for you Peter, having filled in the application form on line for volunteering is that automatic acceptance?
and if so then thats fine only i have commitments this weekend which stops me from catching up with you and the other riders.
Cheers Chris :blk13
-
Chris,
Yes by filling the form out means that you are now an official motorcycle marshal for the 2015 dams challenge.
Chris I have prepared a PowerPoint presentation to show all you guys. It outlines some of the things we do on these events.
:wht11
-
A Saturday arvo or Sunday works for me.
:blu13
-
Have your strobes arrived Brock?
:wht11
-
Not yet, some sort of hiccup. Should get here next week. May have enough time to be ready by next Sunday.
-
How's everyone for meet at dome at Cockburn around 2pm Tomorrow Sunday 12th ?
:wht11
-
I will have to see tomorrow..
-
I can be there on Sunday.
:blu13
-
Should be okay but won't be able to confirm until tomorrow.
-
Yep, I'll be there. Just have to find it.
You Mexicans have funny sounding place names .... :Stirpot
-
Get off kwinana freeway at Cockburn, I'm sure the Dome is on the right hand side just before the BP garage on the left.
:wht11
-
Yep I was right see photo
:wht11
-
Have been in touch with a couple of Ullysses groups so maybe get some more marshals on the day.
:wht11
-
I wont make it for coffee.
-
Running about 1/2 hour late. See you at 2:30
-
Ok, we'll I'm here already, I hope you guys aren't late on Sunday or there may be a problem. :spank :spank
Are we expecting Wombat today?
:wht11
-
Yes it seemed. :Stirpot
-
The group is getting bigger, we now are 8, if anyone is either reading these posts and is not sure contact me and I'll tell you what's involved or if you know of another rider, doesn't have to be an OZSTOC member who may be interested let me know.
The more the merrier, where else can you go for a days ride and someone else pays for your fuel and food.
:wht11
-
Just checked and the weather gods are with us for Sundays race, sun all day, low of 16, high of 27, 2% chance of rain. :hatwave :hatwave
:wht11
-
Do we get a lunch along the way, or should we take sandwiches or something.
-
I've explained to some of the guys that I think there is a sausage sizzle or meal at the end of the race, so any soft drinks or food you need enroute is up to you to provide. Water is available at the stations along the course, you may need a bottle or camelback.
:wht11
-
Unfortunately we have had a marshal cancel for Sunday, so ask around that anyone you might know who has a bike, ST or not that may be interested.
Have spoken to the event coordinator today and payments will be made on the day at the end of the race, if you want it paid into the bank you will need to supply your bank details to the event coordinator.

I have a friend who I ride with who would be interested in coming along to help out. He rides a Honda VTX 1800 and does not wear a full face helmet (only an open face) would he still be welcome to be a marshall?
-
Sure would Chris, you need to get him to register at the address you did. Thank you.
:wht11
-
We dont discriminate by helmet, now if it was a Harley, then maybe.... o:) o:) o:)
-
There is still time to participate in marshalling this Sunday for the BWA Dams Challenge, a great day out on your bike, with fuel and a meal paid for.
Just register at
wwww.survey monkey.com/s/VZXN82P
You never know you might just enjoy a day out in the sun with 2500 Lycra clad people peddling upto 235km in one of the worlds 50th toughest cycle races.
:wht11
-
At present we have 9 marshals, I've just sent messages to 28 WA OZSTOC members in a chance of getting a few more to take part.
Let's hope that some of them come and help us.
:wht11
-
Is everybody busy on Sunday?
:wht11
-
I am.
-
Brock, have you got your lights sorted for tomorrow?
:wht11
-

I have just spoken with my mate Stew who filled in the application form on thursday evening for the motor cycle marshalling and he tells me that he hasn't heard from anyone as regards being needed, i did received a phone call on tuesday from Linda telling me that some info regards the event was coming out in the mail and i am still waiting, they are probably busy in there at the moment so we will rock up in the morning and see if we are needed.
Cheers Chris :blk13
-
Chris you and Stewart are most definitely needed, pm me your email addresses and I will send you a PowerPoint I have done, see you tomorrow, bright and early.
:wht11

:wht11

I would just like to say a big thank you to Pezzz, Wombat, Brock, Malcolm, Chris, and Stewart for helping out with the marshalling today, I hope you all had a good day albeit a tiring one, but returned home safe and sound.
Now you have tried marshalling, a few have expressed wanting to do more, maybe we should put together a marshalling team for other events in and around Perth.
What do you think?
:wht11
-
Sounds good,
Those white bike certainly have a presence when in a group.
Even got a wave or two from the coppers.
-
after first having thoughts of what the hell do I do I had a great time. :runyay Appreciation of riders after they realized you were there to help was great also. Count me in if a group is formed. Name from Mitch THE MAMIL MINDERS :eek

I had quite a few riders say thanks for the effort, they appreciate having aid available...
-
Party lights have arrived, but thats a whole different thread.
-
Forgot to post this up last week. I (and i guess all the rest of the us) got an email from Lisa with the below.....
Dear Mark,
On behalf of Bicycling Western Australia I would like to express my sincere thanks for your generous support of for the 2015 Dams Challenge, in particular being a motor marshal throughout the event and ensuring our riders are assisted along the course.
Initial feedback from riders and stakeholders has been overwhelmingly positive and your assistance was integral to the success of this year’s Dams Challenge and the enjoyable experience of all the riders on the day.
Once again, thank you for your support and myself and the Bicycling Western Australia team look forward to hopefully welcoming you back to other Bicycling Western Australia’s events.
I welcome any feedback that you may have and we will incorporate into our post event reviews.
Always nice to hear good feedback.
