Street Lore
« on: September 06, 2020, 08:56:33 AM »
I stumbled across this info yesterday while moving our son into a new rental.   A clock of the wall of the house was not going and set on 4:20.     My son advised that the number 420 is a sign or signal by supporters and users of canabis.   There is an interesting history behind the number.
See....   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/420_(cannabis_culture)

A related topic that also came up was that shoes thrown over power lines indicates that drugs are sold nearby.
See....    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-10/shoes-over-powerlines/9634158?nw=0

Another example of Street Lore is the number 81 which signifies Hells Angels.   81 is a metonym and it stands for the 8th letter of the alphabet which is an H, and the 1st letter of the alphabet which is an A

Does anyone know of any other interesting Street Lore signs or symbols?

I've heard about shoes being thrown over power lines for that purpose but the 4:20 was news to me.

In Japan any places don't use 4 or 9 in their house/unit numbers because both have similar numbers that mean death.  It's not uncommon to find the next house after 38 to be 50 or hotels floors to go from the 3rd floor to the fifth.  I think some places here do the same for 13.

I knew that 420 was a code for cannabis, relating originally to the amount that could be purchased for the amount - $20 bought 4 of a measure.

Of course 42 is the answer to the meaning of life, the universe, and everything in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

My theory is that Douglas Adams wouldn't have got away with 420 being the answer on the BBC or with the publisher, so it became '42'.

:think1 So the answer to the meaning of life, the universe, and everything is cannabis?

6-21 has mega-use throughout modern society. Speaking alphabetically, that is.

Far more popular than 42.

When I was working in South Africa last year I visited a bikers rally near Durbin. The local Hell's Angels chapter flag and patches had 81 as the center symbol.  They said the law didn't allow them to display the words "Hell's Angels", so they use 81 instead. Was given a badge to wear on my colours by the President, nice chap. First i'd heard of it too.
