Title: My Former Pride & Joy
Post by: ruSTynutz on March 20, 2020, 08:16:00 PM
I thought I'd start a thread where members could share photos of their former pride & joy...and no, I'm not referring to former wives or girlfriends but your previously owned motorcycles"... :whistle

I'll kick things off with a few pics of my trusty ol' 1982 Honda CX500EC...purchased brand new from Geoff Taylor Motorcycles in Dandenong for $3,152...

Ahh, the good ol' days before tourism took over...Not a boardwalk or fenced off area in sight...  :runyay
I think this may have been Australia Day long weekend, 1987 or thereabouts...Damn alzheimer's!!! :-[

I believe this was taken in 1988...I was in Canberra for the Happy Birthday Australia Rally, me thinks...
Can you imagine parking your bike there nowadays?
  :rofl

Although I was a keen rallyist back in those days, I kept my CX in mint condition...

This was the start of my love for Vee engine motorcycles...

Beautiful  :like. Was that the turbo version?

Hey Jd, no, it was just a stock CX500EC with an aftermarket turbo style fairing fitted.
I got the fairing from a company in Queensland...I can't remember their name.

I did a few mods after fitting it like making an aluminium dash to which I then fitted a radio cassette player.  :thumb
I also fitted aftermarket wing mirrors sourced from a local car accessory shop.

I fitted a Givi topbox with mounting brackets for a Kawasaki GPZ600 as Givi didn't make any to suit the CX...
I just had to fashion a few extra brackets to mount it solidly. I then swapped out the rear blinkers with (I think) Kawasaki KL250 trail bike units.

Cheers  :beer

In the very early days I owned a little 1969 Yamaha AS-1, a 125cc twin road bike. (no photos)   I did one camping trip on this to Burra, and sold it when I discovered girls and that a car was much more compatible with that discovery.     In the mid 1970's I owned a 1948 BSA M21, a 600cc single side valve thumper.   It was a lot of fun, and I would love to have it in the shed again.  (I can't find any photos)

Yamaha XS650.    I rebuilt this bike and rode ita round Tassie, Vic and plenty of local journeys.

Yamaha XJR1300   This was a fantastic bike...  Good looking traditional style and really quick.   This took me everywhere including Tassie, Snowy Mtns several times, and all through Vic.   I broke it in Cairns while doing a big trip and after fixing it, traded it on my ST.    I did around 80,000km on the XJR.

Honda ST1300   My ST took me all around OZ for a lot of miles in not too many years.   Shillas now has it, and I am sure it will see plenty more of the countrty.   This bike did me well for around 185,000km

Thanks for that, Pete... :thumbs

That's the trouble with the good ol' days and having to buy & have film developed, the lack of photos. :'(
I had that issue with my home built sidecar, I think I only have one or two pics and they were taken before I'd completely finished it.
Hmm, perhaps I'll dig a photo of it out and post it up...

By the way, I really like the styling of the XJR...just a shame it didn't come with shaft drive... :grin
Still, I reckon if I was after a "naked" bike that would've have been high on my list.

Wow. Love that CX. My last bike pre-kids was a black CX. Not my favourite by looks (I would have gone for for a white or a red one) but it was a great little baby tourer. It took Ruth and I on a trip from Brisbane to Rocky and back with surprising ease. Sadly no photo.

Thanks Steve!  :thumbs
Was yours one of the original "Maggots"?
Like you said, the CX made a great baby tourer. I remember dealers sprouting that they'd cruise all day at 140kph.
Personally, I reckon it was revving too hard at those speeds, 120-130kph was a bit more realistic...

The Yamaha XJ900 "Diversion" was a 900cc transverse air cooled four, with a shaft drive, and was high on my list.   However it had just gone out of production, and I prefered the traditional naked look for the XJR.

Yep. And in black it wasn’t particularly pretty, but it was good on the highway. My ST is all over it in the handling department though. From memory it was doing about 5k rpm at 100km/h. Which was better than my CB400NB’s 6k rpm, but I much prefer the 3.5k of the ST.

Hey Pete, I'm actually pretty familiar with the XJ, my brother had the earlier XJ900, (I think it was a 1983 model?) so I got to ride that a fair bit.
Also, when I was bikeless I hired an XJ Diversion a few times just to get my motorcycling "fix"..lol.

I think mine was pulling around 5500rpm at 100 clicks...although, being a V2 it never really sounded that busy.
I think the gearing was a bit different to the old maggot which may account for the difference...  8)

Go buy yaself a bottle of isopropyl alcohol if you can find it. It seems that as soon as folks started to swap recipes for hand sanitizer the old iso succumbed to the panic-buy mania.

The CX was quite a pricey bike, and a solid step above my own pride and joy. The CB400 Super Hawk was the only bike I bought new. $1831.  Strange how we remember these numbers.

The farkle list ran to a bikini fairing and bar-end mirrors.  It was indeed a pretty bike, and it was responsible for catching my would-be wife. She met and fell in love with the bike parked outside first. The she walked inside and met the super-dapper pilot with a full head of dark hair (sigh) and a fonz jacket and she was done for  :crackup.

Plus 1 from here.

One day I still hope to have a CX500

I had a CX500 Custom in the early 90's, it was a good bike at the time, but I don't want to re-visit the past.

... Was that the turbo version?

A local Honda franchise, BV Motorcycles & Mowers in Montmerency, had a brand new CX500 Turbo sitting on display through to the 90's, not for sale, just display.  The story was, the owner brought two, the one on display (with zero km), the other still in a crate.

Wonder where they are now?

Started my road biking career with a CB500/4, then 750/4 before moving up market to a Yamaha XS750D (at $2200 on road).

I knew a guy with one of those (XS750), and later on my housemate had an XS850. He let me ride it a couple of times. It had an awesome low down gruff growling feel to it. Nearly lost my wife-to-be off the back when I decided it would be fun to open it up. Her feet came up off the rear pegs up to about level with my waist, I closed the throttle and thankfully her legs dropped back down into place. We were both just a tad shaken!

My road biking career commenced in 1976 on a blue '75 CB400/4 with 10,000km for $1,000.  It was a good bike at the time (Two Wheels bike of the year in '75).   Jeffrey Honda in Ringwood had one a few years back, took it for a ride whilst getting tyres fitted on the ST1300.  It confirmed how good the ST is, and like the CX500, I have no interest in revisiting the past.

It was quite a good looking bike...as was the CX Sports...well, in my opinion anyhow. :thumbsup
And yes, it was fairly pricey...I remember at the time I half considered a Kawasaki GT750 which wasn't much more. The Honda won out though because I really wanted water cooling, something easy to work on as well as shaft drive. At the time there weren't many water cooled bikes around...

I must admit, I would've liked a larger engine but at the end of the day, the CX did the job and never let me down.
It was also simple enough for a mug like me to service...especially with the screw and lock nut tappets...in fact I did all the servicing from new except for the first service which was free.

Yes, the XS was a good thing in it's day but don't want another one.
Sold the XS to buy a Ford Escort RS2000 (don't want another one of them either) and later bought s/h Ducati Pantah, went trail bikes for a while then Honda FT500 (still have it), ST1100, Honda NX650, Royal Enfield classic 500 and to my present CF Moto 650TK.

I wouldn't have said no to one back in it's day.  :thumb
They copped a bit of flack as they were a bit of a slug off boost but, for the sort of riding they were designed for, I believe they were a very nice bike.

It’s an awesome looking machine...  they really smartened up the looks for the later models.

Yeah I had a gear sack too. As well as carrying stuff it also helped me to not lose Ruth off the back of the CB900.

wish I had more pics of my old ones. I’m bummed that I don’t have a single pic of the old YG-1. It would scream along at 85kmh after I cleaned out the ports.

I must admit I was pretty proud of it.
I also picked up a few awards with best presented bike a few times. Actually, I remember one time I attended a rally at Heathcote Park Raceway and picked up "best presented" bike over a heap of Harleys...you reckon they weren't cheesed off...lol.  :crackup
At the time I think it had over 50,000k's on the clock and people found it hard to believe... :rockon

Enough of the CX....here's my other former pride & joy...  :grin

I present the "Road Slug"

Yep, that's a little Honda CB250RS with a home built sidecar attached.
As the name implies, she was pretty slow out on the open road....you quickly learnt the art of slipstreaming trucks/vans if you wanted to go faster than 80kph.
It was so much fun riding it though, in fact I've never had so much fun going so slow!

Since these photos were taken I added a windscreen, an interior light, a cassette player and a tonneau cover to keep the rain out.
The seat tilted forward to allow access to the rear compartment where I kept a 10 litre can of fuel.

I was envious because I don't have photos of me at that age.  I do have this one of me and a wheelbarrow I pushed the length of Japan in 1991.  I was 23 at the time.

Pray tell more about the wheelbarrow epic! You presumably were not on drugs (otherwise you would have toppled back off that railing), nor insane (I don’t see any men in white coats), nor homeless (otherwise you would have stayed put and slept under said bridge).  So what would possess you to push a wheelbarrow that far? Was this a new home delivery venture ? :rofl

I just wanted to do something that no one else had done before.  Almost all of my travel in those days was on foot or by bicycle.  That bridge connects two islands (Kyūshū and Honshū) and there is a two tunnels as well, one of which is designated for pedestrians and cyclists.  The trip took three and a half months which included a bit of zig-zagging.  I'd love to do it again.

Actually, I believe that bike encouraged my legs to grow!
When I first got it I could barely touch the ground and regularly fell over if the ground was uneven.
Now I don't have that issue, well, not so much on the bike anyhow... :crackup

This was my first bike, purchased second hand in around 1973 for around $300 from Yamaha Pitmans in Gouger Street, Adelaide.
Not the actual bike of course, but an image of a similar one grabbed from the web.
Ever since I sold it, the evocative smell of rubber, oil and fuel, that pervaded bike shops was like a drug to me, but it wasn't until about 2003 that I got seriously back into motorcycling.

Mine was from Fraser Motorcycles in Hunter Street Newcastle.  It's been a while since there was anything "industrial" in Hunter street.
I sold it and got an Austin A40 in 1969.  Then my next bike was a Postie that I assembled from parts in PNG in 1983.  Sold that and bought a scooter then another Postie in Moresby in 1998.  It was 2006 before I got my ST1100 and got back into bikes in Oz.  And, as they say, the rest is history.

This was my pride and joy back in '74 when I bought it.  The TS185 was $195 from a guy in Glenroy, and for those bucks, he tossed in an open face helmet and gloves.  I still have the gloves.

(https://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu159/williamson_photos/Suzuki%20TS185/14322491_10154453274617278_845694046010049219_n_zps1lh0g4lw.jpg) (https://s643.photobucket.com/user/williamson_photos/media/Suzuki%20TS185/14322491_10154453274617278_845694046010049219_n_zps1lh0g4lw.jpg.html)

In the pic, it's sitting on a custom made rack on the back of the HQ PV, about $50 for the rack (but a mate had to weld a couple of lengths of angle-iron to brace it) and around $3,300 for the PV (in '73).

The pic was in mid '75, packed and ready to head for Cairns.

That's the same as the TS185 I had... :thumb

My brother originally bought it for $80, I think. It was a bit of a basket case though. It ended up stored in a calf shed out on the farm for ages before I bought it off him. It's funny though as he ended up helping me put it back together. Why he didn't do it when he owned it I don't know...  :fp
This was back in 1976 me thinks...

I ended up buying another bike off him down the track, a Honda XL250...just like this:

Before the Honda I'd only had 2 strokes and, to be honest, I looked down my nose a bit at Honda and their 4 stroke bikes, especially when I was trail bike riding up in the bush. My opinion changed after owning that XL and was probably the reason I ended up with my CX down the track.

I kept the XL for a couple of years then traded it in on one of these:

What a disappointment!

It was slower than the old Honda, pretty hopeless with a pillion and I just couldn't wait to get rid of it!
If only I hadn't traded the XL...especially when I thought back to how little they gave me as a trade... :'(
Anyhow, I put up with it for 5 months and then traded it in on my Honda CX500EC...
Thankfully I didn't lose much as I'd got the DR tax exempt...pretty much just the cost of the rego... :thumbs

And the rest, as they say, is history... :beer

No photos of my first bike, a 1948 98cc 2 speed (hand change) James. My older brother gave up on it due to oil leaks and it jumping out of gear.
I rescued it, fixed the oil leaks and gear problem.
This is a link to one that was sold recently.

https://www.mecum.com/lots/LV0120-403690/1948-james-comet/ (https://www.mecum.com/lots/LV0120-403690/1948-james-comet/)

Interesting that summary below the photo says it was a 3 speed yet in the write up below it correctly called is a 2 speed.
The write up also talks about a torpedo oil tank but it was a 2 stroke using premix petrol, the "topedo" tank was a tool box.
I remember I could fill the tank for 20 cents. I have this feeling that in 1968 you could buy 2 stroke premix direct from a bowser does anybody remember that?,
If anybody knows how to pull the photos from the add I would love to have them as I guess the add will disappear soon.

Re the premix, it was BP 'Zoom' and the attendant could adjust the amount of oil that was mixed by a handle on the side of the pump.

Since we are generally resorting to photos of ‘bikes that are just like my first one’, I submit my YG-1. I started at UQ in feb 1980, and lived in a place right at the top of a steep hill at Toowong. My plan was to pushbike to UQ, and that lasted about 2 weeks before I started to tire of it. Then I spotted an ad at the uni for this little guy for $275, and I was in. My dad talked the girl down to $250, and I officially became a biker. I used to ride it home from Toowong to the Gold Coast every second week, at 85kph. Wouldn’t be game to try that nowadays!

This is the little brother of Pete’s first love.

By way of trivia, my YG-1 (and I believe Pete’s yammy  also) were made by Bridgestone.

The Autolube system meant that you could fill it up at the pump with standard fuel.

Wow. That really is a beauty.

On an iPad just touch on the pic for a few seconds and you get a pop up to save it. On a PC you’d usually right-click and save.

Thanks for the suggestion Steve. I use a laptop and the old right click didn't work. Looks like ruSTynutz has it sorted for me but I will try my wife's Ipad as a matter of interest.

Ahh. So that’s what it is. I saw one of those in the city last year and was intrigued by the idea of a baby ST. Unfortunately it wasn’t in. Sry good shape.

Yet another of the bikes I drooled over in the Uni car park as a youngster. Basically anything with a fairing and a shaft....

Just came across the photos of the CX500Ec Rusty, it bought back memories because I had the same bike for a few years too. I'd previously had a cx500 with the aftermarket full fairing and panniers. It took me on a 200km round trip to Uni and back for three years, usually riding back along the freeway to the Blue Mountains at night. Lots of fun. The headlight was terrible so I'd usually flick in behind a rapid car once it passsed me. I got the CX500EC second hand. Saw it advertised and thought it looked great. Again, nice bike to ride but a bit small for my 196cm frame so traded it on an ageing BMW R100RT, but thats another story! I'll dig out some old photos and post them soonish. Does anyone else wish they'd kept all their old bikes? I could open a museum if I had.

Cheers Rod!  :beer

I'll look forward to seeing your photos... :thumbs

I kept the ol' CX for close to 30 years. Finally sold it for next to nothing as I'd moved into a Unit and was pushed for room.
It needed restoring as it had sat in an open shed and hadn't been started in probably 10 years or more.
It was a real shame seeing it like it was but I was in no position at the time to bring it back to it's former glory.
A bloke in Townsville bought it...  :'(

Also a photo of my most admired bike. Its a gl1000 cruiser with a single seat with red flames and a ''crinkle'' style red and black paint job. I bought it as is and rode it for a few years before selling it on. It was my second gl1000. The other was a full dress tourer and this felt like a lightweight in comparison!

And my current bike , a very clean VFR800 non v-tec. Its a worthy companion for my ST1100 which holds the record for my longest owned bike (13 years)

Except mine was black.

My first bike was a CB125S, similar to this, although I had a topbox on mine.

Sold many years ago, this is all I have left of it, found it clearing out my Dad's garage, the days when a front number plate was used.
