Putting the ST1100 into gear and the motor cuts out.
« on: February 11, 2025, 11:17:40 AM »
Hello
I have just put all my plastic back on the St1100. The bike has been off the road for several years. Over that time I have started and let the bike run for several minutes and never pulled the clutch in or put it into gear.

So now that I'm ready to get a roadworthy I've got the problem of it cutting out when I put it into gear. It is like putting it into gear with out using the clutch.

I have to have a look to see if i may have dislodged a wire or two.

Does anyone have any ideas of where I need to look for my problem?
Regardsd Rex

Possibly the engine cut-off switch which won't allow you to select a gear without having the clutch lever pulled "in".   Your problem may be due to a loose or faulty connection at either the clutch lever or (I suppose) at the clutch end of the wire, or perhaps a faulty wire.

Do you happen to have the side stand down when you are putting it into gear?
I know I've done that on my 1300...  :think1

On the left side of the bike, near the side stand is a 3wire loom with a plug. That goes to the side stand position switch. If the bike has a "Sidestand not up" indication, the engine will cut out when put into gear.  Police bikes use this function (via a switch) to allow the bike to be left running with all the lights on if needed. It prevents a "Wally" jumping on the bike and riding off.

I made up my own to immobilise the bike..

r. It is like putting it into gear with out using the clutch.

That seems like clutch plates have
seized. Put in gear and with clutch pulled see if you can move the bike , if it doesn’t you might have rock forward and backward to release the clutch plates.
Cheers.
