Luggage Rack
« on: January 16, 2017, 09:09:24 PM »
Looking for some advice on mounting a top box to Candy. I currently have a Ventura rack mounted & while useful, doesn't have the capacity I'd like (in the bag) & my significant pillion (new to riding) would feel more comfortable with a backrest. Thirdgear.com.au have a top box & backrest they can deliver for under $70, but the advice on mounting is to cut the upright off the rack to enable the box to mount. A couple of concerns here - 1. as the Ventura can't be used as a backrest, not sure how the remains of it could be a suitable mount that supports a backrest. 2. the Ventura rack resale value is higher than the cost of the third gear system, and I'd rather keep that for trading later.

Can anyone help with sourcing a luggage rack that suits an ST1100, or have an alternative that meets the criteria of being suitable for taking both weight over the end of the bike and pressure from a pillion? And with luck, doesn't cost a fortune.

Cheers

Another alternative may be a bag to fit rack that has adjustable lumber support for your pillion...I had a Kuryakyn bag on one bike that did this...good capacity and excellent quality...http://www.kuryakyn.com/category/8/luggage-organizers-and-storage-covers
One day you will wake up and there won't be anymore time to do the things you've always wanted so do them NOW!!!
Remember there are 7 days in a week and Someday isn't one of them!

I was going to suggest the OEM rack but it looks like it's out of production but eBay is useful at times.

This one is a Givi rack so you could go that way and fit one of their boxes http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Honda-ST1100-ST-1100-Pan-European-Gepacktrager-Luggage-Rack-Givi-1990-2002-/121508855857?hash=item1c4a7e0031:g:SKoAAOSwj0NUgiCn

I have the OEM rack on mine and a Third Gear generic top case and it's mounting plate on top. http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=7022.msg80228#msg80228

You should be able to mount the same case on the Givi rack

OEM Rack in Picture so you can compare to Givi

Over the years, I have fabricated or adapted luggage racks for a couple of bikes, and might me able to help.   I've sent you a PM (Personal Message) with my contact details .
