During John's round Australia ride, following the Border Run, Saaz came down with the flu which rapidly turned into pneumonia. He was initially hospitalised in Derby but was subsequently flown to a Perth hospital by the Flying Doctor for specialised treatment. He remains in intensive care in a critical condition. The hospital will not allow visitors nor divulge details of his condition at this time apart from to his immediate family. I will provide further details when he is returned to a ward as I know Perth members in particular will be keen to visit him.
Cheers

Does anybody know what Perth Hospital? My son does two days a week at Royal Perth and is a doctor so would be able to call by and see if there is anything we can do for him.

Not known at this time.

It would either be Royal Perth or Fiona Stanley. Can someone ring and ask or pm me Saazs full name and I will have Scott find out.

Hoffy I would assume it is still in Derby, do you know the local boys up there? Maybe they could look after it for John

Brock has spoken to Scott, my son, but unfortunately John is apparently in Fiona Stanley and not Royal Perth.

Thoughts are with you John.

I know some one at Fiona Stanley, I will see what information is available.
-
I have Johns number on my phone for when he is well enough to receive calls ( if he is able to use his phone at the Hospital )

Best wishes to you Saaz my good man.
Fight it off and take the time to fully recover.
Looking forward to hearing good news in the coming days.

John's family is organising John's affairs including bike, belongings, etc.
Everyone has John's interests at heart but its best not to cut across what his family is doing in this regard.
Similarly, with respect to the hospital, he is getting the best of care, and when his condition improves and he goes back to the ward, his family will notify us. Even then he may not be allowed visitors for a while but we'll be notified when we will be able to visit him.
-
Thanks for the update Lionel.

Well done Lionel.
I knew he would be getting the best attention he could but I would have hated to find that his bike had been left in the carpark in front of the hospital.
I will cancel what plans I was thinking.
Regards
-
According to his family there has been no change in John's condition. Like everyone else I was hoping for a notification of improvement after the weekend, following the specialist's visits today.
In Derby, John's gear and bike have been secured by the very helpful locals. The family are very pleased about the locals' assistance. They have decided to wait for John to recover sufficiently to tell them what to do about the bike. When he was about to be moved to Perth I asked him about his bike. His response was "We'll worry about that later."
Knowing John, he'll take some recovery time in Perth, Colac or back in Canberra. Then he'll probably fly back to Derby to continue his journey. I have no basis for saying that but I would rather remain optimistic.
I may not have enough information to provide a daily bulletin. But I will pass on any change in his condition.
Hang in there, John.
-
Hang in there mate.
Lionel,
Can you let his family know that I've made other arrangements for the 12th Sep, so he doesn't have to worry about getting back to Canberra in time for me. He needs to rest.
-
John, my thoughts are with you for a quick recovery :Blow
Tell me if I'm out of place, but I was wondering,......after such a long ride...this wasn't some ploy to get a free bed, feed and nursing?.....was it? If it was, then :like , if it wasn't, then :-X :'(
-
Still in our thoughts John
Pneumonia is a serious condition, it shouldn't be taken lightly by us (Not that it has), as I'm sure ST2UP, Pokey and Sicman can testify how big a battle lay before Saaz. So I encourage everyone to keep the positive thoughts going, if you've already post well wishes post more of them here. The power of positive thought, well wishes and prayer for those who pray.
We're all behind you Saaz
, keep fighting mate, we want to see you back on that bike..... ++
-
Saaz, Nothing would be so sweet as to see you back on your feet, so please get well and all will be swell. All the very best.
-
Thanks for the latest update Lionel. Fingers crossed for some good news later in the week.
-
John remains on the critical list. His doctors believe he is responding to treatment and are talking about reducing the sedation. I got the impression that he will be remaining in the intensive care ward for some time.
-
Many thanks for the update Lionel :thumb

I will give the hospital a ring today, and see if he can take a visitor. I knock off at 1200, and the hospital is 5 min away on the way home.

Glad to hear Saaz is improving and thanks to Brock and Lionel for updates. Please pass on my best wishes for rapid recovery.
-
SAAZ has approved a visit, so I will pop in and see him for a few minutes and sse if there is anything he needs.
-
Can't wait to hear from you about your visit; I've been hanging out for any updates to his condition. I hope the knowledge of everyone in OZSTOC wishing SAAZ the best will help him further in his recovery. There's certainly enough will here to want him to get better soon!
-
Well, I visited SAAZ, and had a chat for about ten minutes.
He is week, but getting stronger, and his nurse is going to try and get him out into the fresh air soon. I told him he had pages of well wishes and that seemed to make him happy. His nurse says he is much improved, and will hopefully moved out of ICU soon.
SAAZ says it will be more than a week or two before he is back on the bike again.
If any of the Westies want to visit, please ring Fiona Stanley Hospital to see if he can take visitors, you wont be able to just wander in..

Excellent news - Thanks Brock :clap

Well done Saaz. Brock has come up with a cool word 2 describe your strong will amid all the uncertainty surrounding your treatment and progress:
"factious"
ˈfakʃəs/
adjective
relating or inclined to dissension.
"a factious country"
synonyms: divided, split, sectarian, schismatic, dissenting, contentious, discordant, conflicting, argumentative, disagreeing, disputatious, quarrelling, quarrelsome, clashing, warring, at variance, at loggerheads, at odds, disharmonious, tumultuous, turbulent, dissident, rebellious, insurrectionary, seditious, mutinous
"he had transformed a fragmented, factious resistance movement into a monolithic one"

Anyone have any further news on John?
-
Brock may have an update later this afternoon :popcorn
-
Yep, Update time.
SAAZ is doing a little better, ate a reasonable lunch while I was there. He was talking more clearly and strongly today, but was getting tired quickly. He has been wheeled outside for fresh air during the week, and could be going outside again this afternoon.
SAAZ will have to cancel the meet and greets due next week, as he doubts he will be allowed on the bike any time soon. His Nurse was going to try and organise to get his personal effects sent down from Derby, so he may have comms soon.
I passed on all the wishes from all those who contacted me, and from this page. I told him he had about 500 people wishing him a speedy recover and sendin good strong get well vibes. I think he was pleasantly surprised. He may get out of ICU in a week or so, but that means he will lose his cute Nurses.
Should anyone want to send a card, you can send it to me and I will drop them off. Address them to
SAAZ

Balranald would shurly like some news too.

-
Saaz's sister telephoned me with an update this afternoon.
He is about to be moved out of ICU and back into a ward.
Unfortunately he will still have some tubes attached and you need to telephone before visiting as advised by Brock.
His other sister is going to Perth for about a week to be with him.
Its a step in the right direction but the road to recovery is going to be a long process.
-
I'm sure SAAZ would love to get a visitor or two, but as Lionel has said, call the hospital to see if he is available, and find out where he is. I wont get there tomorrow, as I have a dental appointment in the morning. I may get there over the week end if I get a chance.

Havent managed to get in there lately, I will try on Friday.

Saaz just telephoned me from the hospital and he sounds much better than the last time we spoke. He is hoping to be released back into the wild next week sometime. He’ll get a flight back to Canberra and arrange for his bike to be transported home.
His phone and wallet are in hiding and he is keen to be reunited with them to make a few arrangements. Let’s hope they are located in Derby hospital and returned to him ASAP.

I talked to John yesterday, he sounded much better then in previous conversations when he could barely whisper. Yesterday his voice was stronger, still not his old self but much better. Having said that after about 5 minutes he was tiring and I let him get some rest.
He told me it would likely be a few more weeks before he would be out of hospital. He is still connected to machinery and drips and the Docs still have a few treatments to try on him.
Once he is discharged and, if not being medivaced back to Canberra (hopefully not required), he will probably benefit from a couple of days on the ground in Perth before flying back home.
He is in a "normal" ward and can take visitors, so if you have some spare time and are happy to go see him, I'm sure he would appreciate your company. Maybe a call beforehand to Fiona Stanley 08 6152 2222 enquire about John Nagle.
-
I will be visiting this afternoon, I will take the Tablet (Samsung type) with me an if permitted, I will let him see this page, maybe even get him to make a post.
Definitely ring before you visit, as he could be sleeping.

Looking forward to the latest saaz post.

Today is Family and Community day public holiday in ACT. A most appropriate day to visit John in hospital.

John is getting stronger, not hooked up to as many machines now. He still gets tired quickly, so the visit didnt last long.
John hopes to move to another ward in another week or so.

I have sad news.
Saaz (John) has been transferred to palliative care and is off life support. I understand that this was John’s decision. He is not expected to be with us for much longer.
I intend flying to Perth tomorrow to assist in arrangements for his return to Canberra once he has passed.
I hope to be able to talk to John but if not, I know he would want to thank everyone for their solid support during his hospitalisation.
-
That is such sad news, and I have no words. We had all hoped that he would recover, to ride with us again. It's a brave decision for John to make, and those of us with a faith may take comfort from the knowledge that he'll be kept safe as he passes.
-
Mate. Sad news but not unexpected. If you get there before he passes give him a hug for me. :(
-
So sad to hear this ... Was looking forward to catching up with him in the future ....
He is such a wonderful guy and will be sorely missed by all.
-
Tragic news, devastating . . John has been my riding partner for ten years . . I am feeling very down at the thought of losing him . . I know he is a fatalist and I understand John's decision fully, but I am deeply saddened . .
Lionel pls tell him I will miss him immensely . . I am blabbering but I am lost . .
-
DEVASTATED!
I believed all was coming along good and well and that it may have been a slow but steady recovery!
Fight on my friend. We are NOT READY to say goodbye yet.
There have been so many good times and all who know you are better off for it.
Thanks for being you.

I have no words....
