Micro gear is fine for me. I ride both trail and road, (DR650 & ST 1300). I have two different set-ups. It's even more micro for the trail bike than for the road bike. Different tents, sleeping bag and other gear, more tools on the trail bike, same cooking gear for both - and always a First Aid kit.
On the road bike if it's an overnight stay I tend to use Pubs, but if it's two to more nights stay I use Caravan Parks or National Parks. On the trail bike it's usually only a two day ride with overnights in National Parks.
Basically if you're only going to do one night in a month, you can suffer the smaller gear, but it your going to be doing it for long stays or several overnights in succession you need a bit more space in your gear. For example a two man tent is fine for sleeping and your riding gear, but a three man tent allows you to get your panniers in with you as well and you don't feel mummified in your roomier sleeping bag.
