Newbie - Picnic Point area Sydney
« on: August 03, 2012, 07:05:20 AM »
Good morning one and all.  I have just inherited my brothers 1994 ST1100A (on rego papers or ST1100S on frame under seat) coming up to 95,000km on the clock, it's red so it may be fast.  She needs some TLC which I'm looking forward to doing. First thing maybe under your collective advisement is fixing the "petcock"/"vacuum fuel shutoff" priced at $153 or bypass it???. Previous bikes I have owned are Suzuki 1100GKE, Katana, Velocette, and the odd choock chaser (trail bike) in my early days.  Cheers for now. :dred11

Welcome aboard. What's the problem with the fuel shutoff valve?

Hi & welcome Vega.

There's a wealth of info, including posts about the fuel shut-off valve, over at

http://www.st-owners.com/?

They've been posting info for years longer than us.  Having said that, there's a few smart ST1100 owners on here, too!

A big hello and welcome,

Glad to see you join up, perhaps we can get together for a drink or ride, I live over the creek at Illawong and also have a red ST1100. Like the other guys mentioned, this forum is full of very useful information that will help you understand your STeed a little better.
You will find everyone is ultra helpful as we're all passionate about our machines and the organised rides for a bite to eat are quite enjoyable too.

Thanks all for the warm reception, and STeveo the "petcock" drips fuel (very little) but I have tightened the screws and will see that helps.  I haven't been in the saddle for many years.  The bike sounds like she's running rough, so I'm in need of a good mechanic that knows his or her s*#t.  Rubencan I'll send you a PM soon to catch up as I'm a shift worker (work comes and I shift).  Cheers and stay safe

Hi Vega
Welcome to your future
My bike was running rough after a period of being left idle and it seemed the only option was a carby strip/rebuild.
I gave the bike a dose of Nulon Total Fuel System Cleaner and it fixed the problem. Try it.
I'm on the mid north coast, contact me if your travelling around or if you intend on using the Oxley Highway if you're coming to Inverell in September.

G'day Vega - welcome aboard mate.

See... your first bit of helpful advice. You'd have to say you've already made your membership fee ($0.00) back in one foul swoop.

Plenty more where that came from too.

Hope to see you out n about with some other STs riding shotgun.

Enjoy your time here.

Cheers, Diesel

Welcome!

If the fuel shutoff is leaking it may be sucking petrol into the right rear cylinder (that is where the vacuum to run it comes from)  A bypass is the easiest fix, but there are some who prefer to keep it as one of Honda's failsafes (it also has a tipover cutoff switch so I think that the fuel cutoff is overkill) Not having the cutoff also means that if the bike sits for a while and fuel dries up in the carbs, the electric fuel pump will prime the carbs easier.

If the bike has been sitting around some petrol cleaner run through for a while and a good valve synch may be all it needs. After that there are a few long term maintenance items to look at, but I have had more trouble with younger cars than an older ST11!  The ST11 is like a cattledog...not much work is no good, lots of hard work is better.

Thanks Diesel and Saaz for your comments, (still trying to learn forum etiquette) I drained the tank and filled with Premium fuel and some Nulon fuel cleaner as mentioned by members and went for a 250k ride (steep learning curve after 25years out of the saddle, remembering counter steering) I did notice that she would make "popping" sounds (technical word) like back pressure from the staintune exhaust when coasting down the hills. Question could this be from the "fuel auto shut off"letting air into the right rear cylinder??? Cheers  :)

It could be just the staintunes letting you hear what is going on..they do tend to release some of the sound a bit more than standard.  Its lucky that you have them on. The bike just may need some riding to get it right, but some fuel cleaner for a while would not hurt. The fuel valve does tend to go with age so it may be better to get it out of the potential problem list.  Lots of ST11s that age just thrive with more use, but as with age generally some things need looking at...must like the riders really!

I have staintunes and they have always made the popping sound on overun, I like it. Mine had a small pin hole in the diaphram when I bought it and it would not rev over about 3-4000 rpm on the road. If you've just done 250ks, I dont think you have a problem with fuel valve. Have a good tune done and check then for faults.
