Here is a new game for you to test and impart your ST knowledge. The idea of the game is a picture of a part from an ST will be posted and you need to:
- Name the Part
- Where it belongs
- What purpose it serves on the bike
If you correctly pick the ST part the right to post your own Pic-a-Part is yours to post...... :thumbsup
Simple Rules:
-The original poster of the Pic-a-Part is the judge.
-Only when the part is correctly identified and confirmed by the Judge may you post your part.
-If the game becomes stagnant a hint may be give by the original poster at their discretion.
-The part must be from a standard ST1100/1300 and NOT a farkle.
Think how this game may help increase the working knowledge of those new to the ST.
Enjoy the game and the knowledge you gain :popcorn
-
Here is the first ST part:

Washer that fits the the banjo fitting for the fuel pump assembly. Both washers should be replaced when you install a new fuel filter. Haynes manual ch4-23.
Thats my quess.

Well who is a smart cookie then........
Congrats to Abe :-++ :-++
The Picture is your.......... :popcorn

Sounds like inside knowledge to me... :Stirpot
-
Sounds like inside knowledge to me... :Stirpot
Well I did order parts from the States for our 13's and it did include the fuel filter :grin
-
Easy one, when was the last time they where inspected or replaced (mine was replaced at 95K) :think1

Drive cush inserts for 1300??
-
Close, very close, but no cigar. :whistle
-
You did mean 1100 I am sure
Drive cush inserts for 1300??
-
You could be right there Saaz, I must have made a typo
-
1100 dampeners is CORRECT. ++
Your turn Brock
-
I think there i a fundamental problem with this game.
The more competitive types are going to dismantle their bikes in an attempt to capture pictures of ever more obscure parts from some where deep in the bowels of their bikes.
Could lead to a rash of tech support requests!!
-
You could be right HT,
However.
let see if this works. It shouldnt be too hard, but I may post a supporting picture later on.

Brake calliper bolt a certain dealer did not make Brock happy
Turtle
-
Thats cheating Turtle, using inside information.....
But correct..
After a front tyre change, there was a scraping noise from the front end. The pic is what I found. Yes I did ring the place concerned and let them have it both barrels.
The front left caliper was flopping back and forth, the bolt about to jump ship. Fortunately no damage done.
Oh, by the way, Turtle, you are it....
-
Ok this should be easy as people

Turtle
-
Is that the radiator thermal fan switch thingy majigy for an 1100
-
Yes 1100 thermo switch
Well done Gavo ps and it's dead don't work bin time
Turtle
-
Turtle,
You forgot to say "Tag your it Gavo"
-
Zevk will be along shortly with a good one.......standby ppl's :popcorn
-
so Gavo is giving away his turn, I'll show an easy ST1300 item with a story to follow on correct response :popcorn
-
The one on the right looks like a 3mm round head bolt that the Allen key has rounded out and has been removed with a centre punch and hammer.
-
hi biggles, the words Alllen and hammer are correct :thumbs, the rest is not....what part is it? :think1
-
total radio silence?
ok, here is a supporting picture of the "relationship" to the part in question...now you have to nail it.. ;-*
-
:rockon I know what they are :nahnah
So somone better get it before I come along and you all get embarrssed by a GIRL :crackup :crackup
Pockey :Blow
-
Go ahead pockey, put all them tuff blokes to shame.... :nahnah
-
I am just letting someone else have a go - may as well be Pockey as it is not a male only game! The exhaust wrapping is interesting.
-
no takers? Not that hard, really.... :think1
-
Ok here it is boys, it's the Ingress down flow screw. :butt
And I cannot believe you have all been shown up by a girl :nahnah now I have to go and finishing making a dress, do the Ironing, cook dinner and now go to the shed strip down the ST to take a picture of something not to hard for you all guess. :whistle
Pockey (The parts speacilist). :KissBlow
-
It could well be, given that I have not looked inside an ST1300 valve cover to date to check what else is in there, and also don't know what bolts might seize up and need to be removed like in the first picture.
-
Ummmm. Sorry pockey dont know what an i ;-*ngress is but that aint it......hold off on your photos till correct response......
-
Oh sorry, will put it in blokes terms. :rofl
They are the inspection covers for the timing and crankshaft on a ST1300 from a 2006 model I think in burgundy, and has a air horn fitted probably made by nautilus and perhaps a 12V aux socket in the left glovebox :think1 no make that the right one.
Pockey :KissBlow
-
:popcorn I'm enjoying this.......
-
I wish Chris would make up his mind :well
-
AWESOME work Pockey ++, if your right :think1
-

All that from two little metric bolts. Sherlock Holmes would be proud!
-
:Cake1
I wish Chris would make up his mind :well
Ok....Ok I did help, but I must say the clue didnt, it made it harder......good one Zevk, if Pockey is right that is :think1
:beer
-
Well Done Pockey!!! :clap it is indeed the crankshaft and timing inspection caps, well done!
Leave it to a GIRL to do the "investigative" work, trawling thru my past farkles lists.... :CB--
The story with these sorry looking caps is, while performing valve clearance inspection, I noted the dealer that perfomed this last (from previous owner, yes, name and shame! Ferntree Gully, Vic. Jeffrey Honda, no longer in buisness.... ) has destroyed the soft walls of the 10 mm + 6 mm Alan inspection crankshaft and timming caps on the front engine crankcase cover. (For those that need new ones, parts 90087-kt7-000, 90084-ky2-000)
I also note, due to overtightening, he has pinched the o-ring of the cap which resulted in a nice little mess.... :spank
I removed the front wheel and guard for better access, with use of heat gun, (thanks brock for the advice) a heavy "persuader" and a 1/4 inch extension bar, they broke free.
They were simply overtightened, unecessarily by the idiot dealership technician, (NOT mechanic) they only need 9 foot pounds!
Now it's your turn Pockey, go take a nice photo and go easy on us.... :-++
-
Ok thank you Zevk,
So here is the part:
(Thanks to Abe for the pic, I didn't have time to pull our ST apart for a picture :nahnah)
-
Although I don't own and have never had an st1100 I bielive I know what the part in question is...
:think1if no takers ....
-
Well don't tease us, out with it :Chocies :grin
-
Haha, Thanks Pokey,
I believe it may the front fork cap bolts >:()
"Clearly...." the 17 mm hex nut welded onto a bolt is a "homemade farkle tool"
(Honda would not allow spot welds as shown, sorry Abe, no disrespect intended :-++)
to assist in removal of the fork caps when bar risers are installed.....
But, as the game states no farkles permitted... :well
-
on closer inspection of the photo, it may just be:
the OEM front 17 mm fork cap that has discolored and in overall neglected condition?
-
Your second guess is close enough I believe, it's the "top retaining bolt from the front shock of a ST1100"
So the Pic is now yours ;-*
Pockey :wink1
-
Thanks Pockey, I will post a photo shortly
-
ok... so here is the next pic-a-part challenge from the ST1300.
What do these bolts secure? :think1
(2 cryptic hints, within the photos for the keen observer)
-
Just had the same problem Zev.
Had to drill two of them out and replaced them with stainless steel screws, and a touch of copper grease.
-
I know! I know!! I had to drill one of the baskets out too. And bluntened two drill bits doing it. The problem is worsened by the fact you can't just grind the top off because of the deep shoulder. It was the classic old problem- the LAST one is always the one that will give you grief.
They hold the plastic base collars onto the throttle body in an ST1300. The air "funnels" for each throttle intake screws onto the top of each of the four.
-
Spot on Biggles, Well done!
i used a fantastic, clever screw extractor made by "Grabbit" (available @ bunnings $32.00) to remove them.
They are NOT philips head scews but J.I.S. (Japanese industry standard) design and can be easily destroyed if a regular philips driver is used...
btw, the hints in the photos were: 8 pc's shown (4 air intake funnels) and the picture of a stripped out head, to demonstrate how tight Honda torqued them down for no real reason
Your turn now!
-
So Bill, what picture have you got for us :Chocies

Which, of course, not being mechanically trained, is what I did.
Can you post a pic of the "Grabbit" please?
Maybe in the Tools section would be most appropriate.

Hi Biggles,
is this from a ST1100?
-
Hi Biggles,
is this from a ST1100?
I actually thought it was so easy I wasn't giving any hints.
So I'm not! :p
I know Abe will leap on it. Either he's away, at work or asleep- or more likely giving someone else a turn.
Thanks for the Grabbit link. I have a set of "Ezy-Outs" which use exactly the same principle but are supplied with a square drive like thread tappers. I broke one off, and IIRC, it's the most common size. I think I forgot to try them when I ruined the aforesaid screw.
The problem with those screws is they pull the relatively large collar down hard on the machined surface (protecting the plastic from compression by the collar). The contact area is so good it hardly needs any torque to make a solid grip.

In a sense, I don't have it either, but that would be giving away another hint...

ok Biggles We (meaning I...) give up what thr heck is that? its from a ST1100 not ST1300 that i am sure....

Nah. I've got to hear others give in too.
I know Abe would know it, prolly Diesel and ST2UP too.
There's a clue hidden in there, but like most clues, more obvious to the giver than the receiver.
-
Is it the ST1300 left side cover that goes over the rear suspension adjuster? :popcorn
-
It looks like one StinkyPete :popcorn :popcorn :popcorn

Give that man the stuffed pink teddy bear! :grin
Mine is in the shed because it is removed when the cruise control is installed in that area.
Of course the "clue" alluded to above was the fact all three own ST13s and 2 of them have MC Cruise controls.
So go and pull something off your bike Pete and annoy the rest of us with your cunning.
-
Here's my contribution.
(I'm about to head bush and will be away for a week, so I've given Biggles the answer.)

Here we go. Where do these two bolts come from? The top bolt is not supposed to be in two parts! Something worth checking....
(http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r92/saaz58/DSCF3197.jpg) (http://s142.photobucket.com/user/saaz58/media/DSCF3197.jpg.html)
-
ha! i have done that, that is the bolts for the rear shock on the ST1100
-
:Chocies Give the man a prize. The top bolt is the top shock bolt from an ST1100. It broke in two sometime, with enough of the threaded part protruding to keep the top of the shock in place. I only found out when I took the side cover off and a bolt head fell out! I had just come back from the Border Run, but when it actually broke I don't know. The bolt also started to undo itself even with loctite so I safety wired it. I replaced both bolts with new ones.
-
ok, see how you all go with this one:

I know it's been a long time since anyone has posted in this thread but I have a part that I don't know what it is, it came out of the top box of my ST1300 that I had to fit. Anyone assist in identifying it?

That looks like that thing you put in your cupboard and forget about it..... Happy to help :grin
