Driveline Problem - Blown UV Joint
« on: October 19, 2015, 06:48:22 PM »
On the run back home from Silverton, I noticed a vibration being transmitted through the footpegs.  It was more noticeable when travelling over undulations where is would show when the suspension unloaded.  It is definitely speed ralated as the frequency of the grumble or vibration changes with speed.   On the centrestand and in gear it sounds quite untidy.

I drained the final drive oil and it's clean with no metal present.  I had the rear wheel off today and the drive rubbers are fine, the bearings feel good and brake is fine.    Drive splines all look OK.     She goes into the dealer tomorrow for a diagnosis, and the service manager suspects a knackered UV joint.

This is a bugger, as she's now off the road.    :cuss      I guess I'll have to mow lawns, dig vegies, mind grandies, hide in my shed while wearing my helmet, cook, and do dishes and other domestic tasks until she's well again.    :'(

How does the rear tyre look Pete......is it out of round ?? I hit a big pothole once and damaged the cords in a bias tyre that gave same symptoms you discribed  :think1

It's a new rear, only fitted a couple of weeks ago, and I don't believe it's tyre related.   With the checks I did today, I think I have eliminated anything to do with the rear wheel or brake, which leaves the driveline.    Because it's a feint but repetitive "clunK, clunk, clunk" as it idles in gear on the centrestand,  Moto Adelaide might be right in suspecting the universal joint, but can't know for sure until it's pulled out.

Woops.....   I had sneaked out of the kitchen while the boss was at work to look at the Forum and got sprung.   :CB--
Tomorrow I might have to put my helmet and jacket on, and watch some GoPro footage.   :'(

I've just had the call......

Front UV joint is totally shagged and about to let go, so I was VERY lucky to get home.
Some seals damaged by the metal bits floating around inside the swing arm, and will be replaced.
Swing arm bearings have some normal wear, so I've asked that they be replaced, since the swing arm is already out.
Spline that the rear wheel engages has a bit of wear but remains quite servicable.
New front Michelin PR4 while the bike is in sick bay, as my existing tyre is done.

Off the road for around three weeks while major parts come from Japan.   :fp

135,000km in six years.   All services on schedule, and I must say that I've never heard of anyone in OZ blowing a UV joint, but there is some discussion on the US site.

I got the bike back today.   She now has a new UV joint, rear engine seal, swing-arm bearings and a new PR4 GT on the front.    It sure feels smooooth with all that backlash taken out of the driveline.  The service manager says that they have never seen an ST with a blown UV joint, but they have done six in the last two or three years in BMW's.   The UV joint was so worn that the housing knuckles were bashing against each other.   :eek

Sooo...  How much dollars for all that, or would you rather forget?
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott
