For Christmas I got an Air horn from Gaz 8)
(https://image.ibb.co/btXDcv/AIRHORN_1.jpg) (https://image.ibb.co/ftVMVF/AIRHORN.jpg)
So last Saturday I finally got around to doing the install :grin
1. Remove seat & right pannier
(https://image.ibb.co/k51HSv/IMG_1164.jpg)
2. Remove plastic covering the battery (right side)
3. Remove the Tupperware from the right side exposing the original horn
(https://image.ibb.co/iOnVfF/IMG_1172.jpg)
4. Remove the mirror (right side) and the screws holding the front faring on this side
(https://image.ibb.co/cNKnSv/IMG_1177.jpg)
5. Push apart the black plastic dash and the front faring. This exposes a metal plate with a unused hole
(https://image.ibb.co/dsURLF/IMG_1181.jpg) (https://image.ibb.co/eVd8Za/IMG_1179.jpg)
6. The hole needs to be drilled out a little to fit the screw that holds the new horn (The plastic needs to be held apart while carefully drilling)
This is where the blot will go after drilling :thumb
(https://image.ibb.co/dmYxSv/IMG_1182.jpg)
7. Bolt the horn onto the bike using the “new” mounting point :wink1
(https://image.ibb.co/hMUqEa/IMG_1184.jpg) (https://image.ibb.co/i3DT0F/IMG_1185.jpg)
8. Plug the original horn wires onto the relay and attach the relay to the bike (I mounted it upside down behind the original horn using it’s mounting bolt)
9. Attach the earth to the air horn and ground it to the bike and attach the power wire to the relay.
(https://image.ibb.co/cV8p7v/IMG_1192.jpg) (https://image.ibb.co/heukfF/IMG_1194.jpg)
Here are some close up photos of the relay showing where it is mounted and how the wires are attached as described in step 8 & 9.
(https://i.ibb.co/3RsTj8b/20200120-090646.jpg) (https://i.ibb.co/w7HFK9k/20200120-090738.jpg)

10. Run the power wire back to under the seat
(https://image.ibb.co/fryp7v/IMG_1196.jpg)
11. Attach the inline fuse holder and connect to the battery
(https://image.ibb.co/jo580F/IMG_1199.jpg)
12. Connect a power wire from the air horn to the relay and put a fuse in the inline fuse holder
(https://image.ibb.co/cGvY0F/IMG_1206.jpg) (https://image.ibb.co/m8Vi0F/IMG_1208.jpg)
13. Test the horn (Damn thing is louder then a truck horn) :eek :eek :eek
14. Replace the front faring screws and the mirror then all the plastic
15. Go for a ride :runyay
Cheers

Awesome. Air horn now next on my list .:-)

I have used my Stebel in anger before and DEFINITELY woke up the cage steerer. The Bad Boy has a better reputation thankfully so I hope you get many happy miles of honking. |-i

Thanks Tack, I hope your right and about the life of the Bad Boy :thumb
I'm just so happy that the horn no longer sounds like it belongs on a small scooter :eek >:() :fp it now matches the size of the bike… BIG :grin :runyay
-
I find I can go for months without using it in anger. But when you need it, they know there's someone calling!!

Flicking on the blue strobe lights probably wakes up a few of them as well :cop

In six years I've needed to use my horn no more than twice........unless you take into account the numerous times I've tested it by waking up an unsuspecting sheep or two in a paddock.
-

Have you ever driven into the middle of a heard of cattle and shot a rifle in the air saaz? Both funy and scary whilst riding a bike, and that's what the blue lights do most of the time. >:()
-
I think you have too much fun in your job :crackup
-
Hi Shiney, Just finished moving the position of my air horn as per your instructions.
Far neater job than the one i did. Works a treat!!!!
Had an occasion to use the horn at Carindale Centre, Bus depot side, which acts like an ampetheatre, any way a car came out of the parking terminal saw me pull out in front giving me 3 bike lengths to stop, then stopped so that I had to manovere around, gave blast of horn and the sound bounced back off the walls of the Bus Terminal (quite Loud), the driver was still in the same place when I had ridden out of sight. Must have had a Heart Attack or something. :blk13 :thumbs :thumbs :hatwave :runyay :-++ :-++
-
That is bloody AWESOME :-++ :rofl :thumb
I bet he'll think twice before doing that again :grin
-
Good job Shiney. :clap
I'm up and down the Gateway in peak hour and a bit of the Bruce Hwy twice a day 5 days a week and have had regular cause to use the Stebel. Usually someone who has forgotten to shoulder check :-((( or use their mirrors :-((( before changing lanes and THEN indicating or on the :phone whilst driving. I'm always on the look out for the SMIDSY so I'm sure I'm not missing anything, I think it is the sheer volume of traffic I deal with that is why I come across so many.
A Quick blast of the STEBEL gets their attention :eek though and they usually get back where they should. :grin
I had one adverse reaction to it though. On the Bruce in the four lane section just north of Pine Rivers a lady in a 4WD ($WD as I initially typed appropriately as it was a Landcrusher or some such behemoth)) just started to wander into my lane. A big long blast and a couple of short ones before she stopped texting at 100 km/h and swerved back into the far right lane. As a result of her wanderings I decided that I would get in front of her and go around the car in front of me. WELL the ute driver :fp in front of her thought I was having a go at him and decided that jumping on the brakes was a good idea :||||. Even when I jumped back into the 2nd right lane to avoid him he decided Road Raging me was a good idea even going as far to spend an inordinate amount of time looking out his rear window to yell at me still at close to 100 km/h??? :fp So a quick kick down to 3rd, throttle opened wide and a few quick weaves left him behind and out of sight. Thankfully that was the last I saw of him. :grin
Still I wouldn't be without the Airhorn! It has saved me so many times!
Cheers,
Gary

Someone should post an audio file of what it sounds like

You can get the sound of the HORN on YouTube, Just search for Stebel Air Hprh and block your ears. :thumb |-i

Thanks for the great examples, they are an excellent safety device :-++ (and they sound cool :grin)
I think installing one is a must if you ride in "heavy" traffic areas, people just don't pay much attention when driving

I had to use it today to keep a tintop out of my lane.
One thing about it- you don't get a "road rage" response - I mean the offender doesn't get all indignant because you want to keep your bit of the road to yourself. They swerve back into their lane and give apologetic gestures because the blast blows away their defences.
How's that for the psychology of horns? :grin

Decided to order an air horn for my ST1300 yesterday so thanks Shiney for the "How to do", I'm sure it will be very helpful! :-++
I knew it was going to be a fairly big job to install but after seeing your guide I'm half wishing I hadn't bothered buying one...lol.
Nevermind, it's ordered now so when it arrives I'll have to get my bum into gear...eventually... :grin
I bought this one: https://items.marco.it/en/products/air-horns/tornado-compact-twin-tone-horn-with-integrated-compressor.html
I guess time will tell if it's any better (or worse) than the Stebel & Bad Boy...
-
The Tornado looks like it'll do the job and the install isn't hard (just take your time and you'll be fine) :thumbs
If you have any questions or run into any issues just post a reply and myself or someone else will be happy to help :thumbsup
Cheers

Thanks muchly, Shiney! :thumbs
It's coming from the States so it may be a while before it turns up...

Dont forget to use a relay to operate the airhorn, and not power it straight off the existing horn wiring. Airhorns can draw 20+ amps..
-
While you're revising your handiwork Shiney, can you remove this
"This is where the blot will go after drilling :thumb"
on your copybook?
-
Thanks guys, I will fix this up when I get home tomorrow :thumbs

Thanks for the heads up, Brock... :thumbs
I believe the air horns I've ordered come with a relay.
I did fit air horns to my ol' CX500EC years ago and used a relay then...They were twin trumpet ones with separate compressor.
Bit bulky but it was easier to fit those back then as my CX had a 3/4 turbo style fairing with plenty of space behind it... 8)

I did talk about the relay in the instructions but I didn't have any pics of just the relay :think1 I'll add some close up pictures of the relay to make it easier :thumbsup
-
That would be great! Thanks Shiney... :thumbs :clap

As I recall, I used the mount hole the old horn was on for my relay attach point.
Just make sure the relay case is watertight because it's vulnerable there. DAMHIK!

some pics of the relay have been added :thumbsup

Thanks Dave! :thumbs :Chocies

Just a question, is there any particular reason you left the oem horn in place? :Wot thuh:

Just on the off chance that the air horn stops working I would easily be able to restore the original horn until a replacement air horn could be installed.

I have both operational, air horn is only used for those special occasions :thumb

It's hard enough grabbing the one horn when you need to give a blast, let alone having to decide which one is appropriate!

Looks like I'll be waiting a while before I get my air horns...
I checked my order and for whatever reason, they are being returned to the seller part way through shipping... :fp
Once they arrive they will then refund me my money. but that will be another 2-10 business days...Not Happy, Jan!!!
Would have been nice to have been notified that there was an issue... :||||

Just an update....
I eventually got a refund but decided in the meantime to buy another Marco Tornado from a different seller.
This turned up today so now I just need to get enough motivation to install it. :grin
I've also bought some brake fluid and a brake bleeding kit as I figured it made sense to do both whilst I have the fairing off.
:13Candy
-
...... whilst I have the fairing off.
Good luck!! I had trouble with the fairing removal, little plastic rivets, some brittle & difficult to remove without damaging them, around $2.50 to $4.00 each to replace. And it took me best part of 1/2 a day to remove and re-fit. :cuss
Pick the brain of Garry_Coates, he mentioned on Saturday (I think he said) 4 minutes to remove and 7 minutes to re-fit, I suppose that's each side..
-
Thanks Michael! :thumbsup
I had the fairing off last year when I fitted my "SpeedoHealer". It took me all afternoon to fit it then... :-[
Hopefully it won't take me quite as long to take the fairing off & reinstall it next time as I at least have a bit more of an idea of what I'm doing...
As for the plastic rivet thingys, I bought some before I did the SpeedoHealer, just in case... :grin
I do remember I lost a lot of time because I messed up the order of the bolts..What a pain in the bum that was... :fp
As for Garry, all I can say is wow! Are you sure he wasn't actually quoting the time in hours & not minutes??? :rofl
Anyhow, to be honest, I'll probably end up leaving the "install" to later in the year when things are a bit quieter...and cooler...
Cheers :beer

A few days ago I undertook the installation of a Stebel Nautilus air horn in Rubina. I had already installed the MCC Cruise Control, the current version of which has the electronic actuator.
The actuator unfortunately crowds out the space we used to put the Stebel in so I had to mount the horn lower, on the same hole the original horn uses.
That works, in that it fits inside the cowl, but it prevents the inner cowl from being fitted. That in itself isn't a problem because a few owners remove the two inner panels in the belief it improves the airflow hence giving the rider a cooler ride in summer.
This is what the installation looks like:
We used to put the relay on that hole but I had a failure of a relay there due to water ingress. Of course its waterproofing can be improved, but in any case, I mounted the relay above the horn. That's the red box. If you look really hard, to the right of that relay is the black relay for the LED driving lights. Oh, and for Brookster, that blue wire attaches to the blue wire at the headlight for the LED relay trigger. The high beam wire is blue on both headlights.
-
Nice work, Bill! :thumbs
You're making me look bad though as I still haven't got around to installing mine... :fp :-[
-
In the 1100, I separated the horn into the compressor and Sound maker joined by plastic tubing. This made it easier to fit both bits. I usefd a relay switched by the horn button, with power coming from a custom fuse setup.
-

Yes- when I put one in my ST1100 there simply wasn't space to mount the unit without separating the compressor from the horn. This meant there was a slight hesitation as the air in the tube was compressed.
-
Well, that was a waste of time... :||||
I finally decided to have a go at installing the airhorn I'd bought ages ago.
After getting the right hand side fairing off I was confronted with a birds nest of extra wiring and black boxes etc related to the HID headlight setup that was already fitted to the bike when I purchased it...right smack bang where the air horn was going to be located.
I'm gonna see if I can move stuff around a bit but it's not looking good... :o
If I was more confident with electrical stuff I'd probably rip out the HID headlights as I've never been particularly happy with them and go back to the standard setup.
To be continued... :popcorn

Without ever having used HIDs or having seen what ancillary kit is required to run them, I’d hazard a guess that they have been surpassed by modern good-quality LEDs
-
The HIDs actually throw a better beam, but there's a noticeable lag when they are cold. The current drain is definitely higher than LEDs and the LEDs' wiring much simpler. You just need to get LEDs with as tight a beam as you can afford. Too many just throw a "glow" rather than a beam, but they all look to on-coming traffic as if you are firing lasers.
-
You're possibly right, Steve, trouble is, aftermarket LED conversions aren't legal as far as I'm aware...
I actually thought the HID's wouldn't be legal either but it passed the roadworthy no worries so I can only assume their brightness is under the limit.
I did question the seller about them and he said the roadworthy guy told him they weren't an issue...
Oh, getting back to the birds nest of wires etc, I did manage to reroute a few things and eventually cleared a bit of room around the horn area but I actually don't think the airhorn is gonna fit there regardless... :||||
-
To be continued... :popcorn
Well, after rearranging the birds nest of wiring & little black boxes I ended up installing my airhorn in the same location that Shiney recommended. :thumbs
One change I did make though was with the position of the airhorn relay. This I mounted close to the battery behind the side cover.
I figured it would be much easier to replace it if it ever craps itself...and, I wouldn't have to rip the fairing back off...
This did make the routing of the extra wiring that much harder to run but I think it should be worth it.
Once back on the road, I'll be almost looking forward to some idiot doing the wrong thing so I can give them a good blast... :grin
(https://i.ibb.co/fCK1t3P/Airhorn-Position.jpg)
What a birds nest of wiring! Hopefully none of it will interfere with the fitting of the fairing...
That frame gusset made the perfect spot to mount the relay. It even had a ready made hole for the bolt!
-
Neat :like
-
I love the idea of the relay being accessible near the battery. Good thinking.

Well, yesterday I made an executive decision to remove the HID's and it's associated "birds nest" of wiring. :law
It's back to a pair of H4's for me...
It shouldn't be majorly hard as I believe it was all plug & play...famous last words, I know... :rofl
-
All done and dusted, no more HID's and associated "birdsnest".
I now have some nice Philips X-treme Vision +130% H4's in their place... :thumbs
-
Well done :thumbs.
-
Good stuff! Would they be about the brightest H4s you can get without going to LEDs?
-
Hi Steve...
There are slightly brighter ones than the ones I fitted but they tend to burn out even more quickly.
I've used these particular type in my car and found them to be a reasonable compromise regarding brightness and longevity.
I guess time will tell if they last as long in my ST as they did in my car... Wot thuh
-
Well, I took my ST for a brief spin tonight after finally getting it all back together.
Pretty happy with the headlights so far, certainly an improvement, I believe, on the HID's....much better spread too.
I guess a decent run at night is now in order to fully determine how good they are but from my brief ride tonight the results are certainly encouraging... :thumbs
These are the globes I used...

*Just an update on the headlights...
Travelling from the Bruthen RTE back to our overnight accommodation in Bairnsdale last Saturday night was a good test of these globes.
This was actually the first time I'd ridden at night with a pillion since installing them so I was curious as to how they would go.
I needn't have worried as I found them pretty good, being able to see far enough into the distance and to the sides that I felt quite confident sitting on the speed limit in spite of being a bit wary of kangaroos.
I decided to order another set the next day, just in case these fail down the track.
The fact that they were available with a 25% discount if I ordered them before midnight Sunday helped with the decision... :thumbs
