It is with a heavy heart that we advise of the passing of Saaz (John) from Canberra, Saaz was one of the earliest members of OzSTOC coming from the earlier yahoo users group. John was instrumental in assisting the club to where it is today and where we will continue into the future, his passion, knowledge of the Honda ST and commitment to Ozstoc can not be stated enough. Saaz was a Moderator from the early days of the club and in 2014 came onboard with Pocket STocker and I as the third voice in the club management team.

We will miss you my friend....your wise words and your easy going approach to all that confronted you.... You sir were a true gentlemen amongst gentlemen  :-++

Wheather you remember Saaz on his white ST1100PY, his more recent Triumph Trophy or his old Suzuki, Saaz was a Rider amongst riders......Ride on my friend.

Lionel and STroppy my sincere condolences to you, your families and to John's family.

I only met John a few times and he was like a long lost mate. So easy to talk to, so eager for a laugh and a prank.

A true Gentleman, Scholar and friend I am pleased to have known all too briefly.

When I'm able to have a red again, I will do so in his honor.

Rest in the Peace you so very much deserve my friend.....

John was a man who loved retirement and loved to ride bikes.

Hopefully he can enjoy both on the other side.

I had the good fortune to have John stay at my house for a couple of days after the Border Run in August and it gave me a chance to get to know him a bit.

I am extremely pleased to have had that chance.

Rest in peace young fellow.

You were one of the first guys to make me feel welcome back to motorcycling Saaz, always on for a beer and a talk about beer and bikes. Always good advice on maintenance.
Went to your place in Canberra and you showed me how to change a rear tyre on a big road bike. All I gave you in return was my version of a good old potato salad for lunch and you were happy with that. Basically a good bloke that helped make being in ozSTOC a positive, worthwhile experience. A good man whose spirit, safe riding reputation and memory will remain as an example to others.
Vale, John Nagle (Saaz) RIP.

Post by: Lionel on October 04, 2015, 06:20:25 PM
After the Border Run in August this year John decided he would ride the long way home, via WA, NT and Qld.
He got caught in bad weather in N-W WA and came down with a severe cold. He was staying in a motel in Derby when he was taken to hospital. His motorcycle and personal effects are still there.
John suffered from cystic fibrosis and was a long way from his support team in Canberra. While in the Derby hospital he suffered a respiratory arrest and was medically evacuated to the Fiona Stanley hospital in Perth by the Flying Doctor. Efforts to revive him in Derby led to kidney damage which required him to be put on dialysis.
He spent weeks in ICU in the Fiona Stanley hospital before being transferred to the cardiac ward. John’s sisters, Brock and Glen had been able to visit him and a few of us talked to him on the phone. I raised the issue about recovering his bike and gear from Derby a few times. John showed little interest which should have set off alarm bells. I was convinced that he would recover so I didn’t push the point.
A few days ago John was put into palliative care in a general ward. Up until this point his closest friends believed he would eventually recover, not to 100% capacity but at least on the long road to some sort of recovery. John requested to be taken off life support and died not long after.
John was a very private person and he did not want his true medical problems to be revealed. This will help to explain the lack of information being disseminated on the various motorcycle forums.
On Wednesday next week John will be cremated in Perth.
A wake will be held at 3pm on Sunday, 11 Oct, at Northbridge Brewing Co., 44 Lake Street, Northbridge, Perth for by those of his OzSTOC and FarRider friends who are able to make it.
What happens after that?
John’s bike and gear will be brought to Perth and the bike will be sold in that location. I will probably remain in the West until that is done and then bring John back to Canberra with me.
John is survived by his mother and siblings who all live in country Victoria.
It has only been a couple of years since his wife, Gina, a diabetic, passed away in a Canberra shopping centre car park on the day that John and I were returning from an interstate motorcycle trip. They had no children.
John came to Canberra in the early 1970s to study economics at ANU. He graduated with honours and spent his working life in the Treasury Department in Canberra.
He retired a couple of years ago and bought a Triumph Trophy motorcycle. He had clocked up more than 70,000 kms in the short time he owned the bike.
There will be a memorial service in Canberra for John in November. The date is dependent on his family’s overseas commitments. Details of his service will appear on the forums.

Here is a little story about Saaz that bought joy to a little girl here in Guyra and to many children with cancer all over the country.....now John may not have wanted ppl to know this at the time, but well, the floor is mine now Saaz  :p

Last year Pockey our son Jaydon and I participated in the Great Cycle Challenge that raised funds for kids with cancer and the research into this horrific disease.....we were apart of the Guyra High on Bikes team and made mention of the challenge and sponsorship we were chasing on Facebook. We each started our own donation with $30 each.......well our Saaz obviously had seen our challenge on FB and behold sponsorship of $70 arrived to each of us from John Nagle, but the story doesn't end here.....

In our group of 17 riders was a 9 year old local girl by the name of Analese who also started with her own donation of $5 towards her contribution.....a couple of weeks into the challenge at a cycle club meeting Analese's mum was questioning all and sundry at whom the mystery donor was to her daughters fund raising challenge as the name ment nothing to the many people in the room that night.......until she approached me......and there it was in print a encouraging message from one John Nagle and a donation of $195 towards Analese's cycle challenge  :-++

RIP Saaz  ;-*

Thank you for filling in the blanks Lionel.
Diesel and i were briefly dumbfoundedly discussing the timeline of events this afternoon trying to make some sense.
Days after his passing i am still a little numb but feel a bit better in now knowing more of the back story.
I would like to think that before he passed that he might have known in his own humble way how many people's lives he had touched.
I feel honoured to have known him for a brief three & half years.
His memory will always raise a smile.

Duncan.

I think if you double click on the images it should take you to photobucket for the original.

Two Johns and a Dicky at the First OzSTOC National Rally in Blackheath NSW in April 2012.  The John closest to camera was from Orange and duly noted for driving the ST1100 engined JZR 3 wheeler to the Rally... He was even MORE duly noted for supplying the flagon of cheap sherry that eventually lead to the bum burning fiasco in Cabin 5 later that night. All three in this pic were witnesses.     :butt

This was outside Anchors Warf Cafe in Urunga that we shared more Breakfasts with Saaz than I can remember. Saaz is wearing we believe the most traveled OzSTOC Jacket in the club.

Mornin' All...

Thank You Lionel for our last post and for keeping me in-the-loop with the many text messages over the past weeks, much appreciated.
Thank you Terry for company and ear over recent weeks and especially the other weekend at Balranald, again much appreciated. And
Thank you Barry for getting John out n about in those early years, Those Snowy Rides.

I had been getting to know John for the best part of 18 years beginning with emails and discussions, of all things,  ST1100 steering head bearings, the odd email which I still have and with one of the last topics I spoke with John about was his Cystic Fibrosis (CF).  I had learnt of John suffering from CF a couple of years back when he and Gina spent some time here in Melbourne.  It'd be fair to say that I gleamed my largest slice of understanding of what made John tick earlier this year when I spent a few days as his guest and during the course of an afternoon which evolved into an evening and continued into a the small hours of the next morning, during which the topic of CF came up. I won't go into the detail, but suffice to say John was well aware that CF had labelled him with a use-by date. Now, if I had to use just one word to sum up who John Nagle was, it would be without doubt or hesitation, John epitomised a pragmatism.

I am in no doubt that John was fully aware that he was nearing his use-by date, he knew and evaluated the consequences  of the rides he undertook, which included his last, which we spoke of at length in March this year.

SAAZ is a verity of hops, or perhaps as the Czech's (from which the name derives), would like us say, Saaz is a noble variety of hops used in Lagers and Pilsner beers which by far John's favourite drop, though John was known to imbibe pretty much anything containing ethyl alcohol as the arse-burning post at the top of this page attests.  But for the discerning  of you people heading to the Northbridge Brewing Co, may wish bear this in mind when you point your finger at the lovely array of coloured labels on top of the handles that display their fine brewed drops and say, "I'll have one of your fine Lagers please".

John and moi' a few months ago at my place imbibing on mutual ground, Sharaz

Ciao, the can :-)

Saaz was always extremely generous with his time, here is is working on my ST1300, installing my towbar and driving lights with Terrys Help

They did assure me at the time, that it had less to do with seeing me, and more to do with the pork roast with all the trimmings that Teela was cooking for them....

Saaz always tried to get me to ride this stretch from Bright to Lakes Entrance. Well... it is one of the GREAT rides one can do in this country, and I fervently recommend it to anyone....

Here we are stopped for brekky at the Omeo Bakery - as you do apparently. Pictured R to L are Saaz, Rocky Rural and Growly...

EDIT: When we stopped for fuel at Lakes Entrance... Rocky Rural put in over 2L more fuel than I did for the same run... I thought it may have been because he rode with the screen fully up the entire time... not sure though.

I thought I would drop a short line having met John a couple of years ago at the Border and then this year as a riding companion on his last big adventure. The WA group also had a dinner in Perth and we showed him the site of Perth at night from the hills that we will ride in March next year. We will miss his enthusiasm for the club but rest assured he will not be forgotten.
Condolences to his family and riding mates

PitSTop and I were overseas on a cruise when we got the news. Home now and its hard to fathom our great Mate has ridden on to ride the roads in the big sky.  :'(

I first met John at the first Nat Rally in 2012 and we had some great chats, over some nice reds, over the following years. A true gentleman was John, who would go out of his way to help fellow riders. He encouraged me, as I was new to riding a big tourer, with inspired words to help me to become a better rider.

I loved his dry sense of humour along with his "Muttley" style laugh and this photo from the Hill End NSW RTE portrays it beautifully.

Reading about John reminds me of an incident from 1977.  My wife and I were on our Overseas Experience, cycling through Devon, Isle of Wight, Cornwall, and up into Wales.  We had come to an afternoon stop in the shade of a tree outside a church in the middle of nowhere looking down over the valleys in Wales when the vicar pulls up in a Morris Minor.  There'd been break ins at the church recently so he had pulled over just to say hello and check the church over.  We had a chat and then he said, "Come with me." He took us around the side of the church to the graveyard.  They'd just laid the headstone on the grave of his sexton, and it read simply,

Name
Birth and death dates
Years of service as sexton

and the line

"A gentle man"

Not "a gentleman", but "a gentle man".  Reading all the comments about John, yet not having met him myself, I feel that epitaph is appropriate for him.

Cystic Fibrosis is not a laughing metter and most likely a family afliction. John beat the odds consideably and he was most likely aware of it too. This makes this man more unusual in my eyes because he wore his lot with a strenght I only can admire. I have only become aware of this dowards the end of his live but he never mentioned or complained about it. In the news is a Tasmanian Father which got 3 sons with this condition. I feel sorry for him and his sons. But thats live. You have to take what you get.

John was 57 Duncan. Way to young, though he'd experienced much in his life and probably much more than others experience in a a much longer life time than John had. Marissa and I were only thinking about John yesterday and I was telling her about the times John and I had shared touring around the Victorian high country on our way to past Snowy rides. I always found John was an easy bloke to talk too and we had a lot of great chats over those years. Marissa and I were both saying how surreal it still feels that he has gone. In just a few weeks we'll be back in Thredbo and John was supposed to be there with us. He will be missed that's for sure.

Edit: I just realised you were asking how old Biggles was :)

Some of you may remember the post card request for the young girl Sara (aged about 8 now and has leukemia) that I posted here http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=6903.msg78666#msg78666 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=6903.msg78666#msg78666) The story continues in 2015 with her toy rabbit sent to various people around the planet and John was one of those people who had care of that toy for a little while.

I'm passing this on http://www.my-mc-phoenix.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13726 (http://www.my-mc-phoenix.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13726)

Quote from the link "One special word for John Saaz, John took my on his bike across New Zealand and Australia. Sadly, a couple weeks later I received the news that John is no longer among us and our trip was John’s way to say goodbye to all his friends and his beautiful country. Although John already know he was very ill, he still took me along and posted all those nice pictures, just because he know it would put a big smile on Sara's face. What a guy! John, you will always have a special place in my heart, I hope you have a great time up their…."

Maybe someone could pass this on to his family.
