Hi, I've recently changed out my rear brake pads, all went ok. I had thought before doing that, and they did need changing, that the pedal seemed to travel a long way before working. Now with the new pads i expected a shorter travel but its not so. I've looked at the manual (thanks Alans1100) and cant see any adjustment. Is there one? :think1

Should have said, I've got the ABS/TCS model.

There is no adjustment, and travel shouldnt change as the pads wear. the brake fluid fills the space in the pistons.
Check the pads are seated correctly, and you may need to bleed the brakes.

Thanks Brock, the pads are seated correctly and the brakes were bled and are solid once they take up, no spongieness, so I think they're ok. I might get a chance to compare tomorrow at the rte at cadell. I think they've always been like this but I expected a change with the new pads. If there's no adjustment I guess it's fine.

There is some adjustment available but only in relation to the pedal height which can be done where the master cylinder push rod is secured to the foot pedal. You can see the location in the remove pedal (almost the last page) in the brake system section of the manual. You would also need to adjust the brake light switch as well; which took ages to get right on our 1100A

Hmmmm..mine does the same....and it's very disconcerting!

Just looked at my pedal, and when pushing by hand it travels down about 25mm

Mine goes a lot more than that, but I realised that if I'm applying the front brake at the same time it goes only about 25mm too. If I press only the pedal it goes maybe 70mm. I've only replaced the rear pads, perhaps if I replaced the front ones it would improve? Not understanding much about the abs system, could it be that if I press only the pedal the brake fluid for the rear system has to fill a bigger part of the brake system.?

Also with the combined brakes (CBS) Honda advises to replace all three sets of calipers at the same time.
You shouldn't have any difference in pedal travel regardless of using the pedal alone or with the front brake.

If you bled the brakes and it was done in the wrong order you may have problems. The front brake is LH caliper then the RH using the upper bleed valves.
The pedal is a little more complicated and has to be done as shown in the next image.

Thanks Alan. When I bled the brakes I followed the manual exactly, in the order specified. I'll have to have another look, because from what you and Brock have said it seems that I may still have got it wrong. No big deal to go through the bled process again though, I'll have a look tomorrow or at least in the next few days. The brakes still are working fine, just the pedal movement is a bit disconcerting.
