Hey guys with WA rally fast approaching. I'm interested in what the travel cost would be ride either one or both ways.
Can someone give a detailed breakdown on what us easterners would need to put aside for the trip.
How much for fuel?
How much for accommodation?
I'm assuming food would be standard pub prices.
I'm guessing 3-4 days worth of travel?
As I've never ridden across. I've no idea what I'm in for. Also as so many will be travelling across at the same time. Is there enough accommodation?
All stupid questions for you guys I'm sure but I'm in the dark.
Thanks

I think we might create a WA rally thread, and put this in as an edited version at some stage to assist all those intending to ride across.
Something like this thread is a start, on fuel availability. http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=6682.0 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=6682.0)
Information on places to stay etc are around in one place or the other.
Just someone make sure Tipsy knows that he might have to leave a week early this time!

Here's a full cost breakdown of a 51 day tour I did in 2009. I was with two other riders, and we stayed in Caravan Parks using the camp kitchens, and shared a single site wherever possible for our tents. We did most of our own cooking. Costs would have increased since then, but it may serve as a guide for doing a trip "on the cheap".
Total Distance 16,314 km
Fuel Cost $1062.30
Fuel Litres 794.14 litres
Accommodation $967.50
Food $1196.65
All Other $561.60
Total Trip Cost $4582.19
Total Average per day $89 per day
Average Food per day $23
Average Accom per day $18.97
Overall Fuel consumption 5.9 lt/100 km
Savings could be made if I was disciplined enough to minimize purchase of cold drinks and lunches, and put up the tent a little more often, rather than getting cabin when I've been tired and hot.
-
I'm talking about just the cost for getting over there. Not the other 48 days. And non camping options
-
Pezzz and Gavo should be able to give some info, hopefully they recorded the cost per litre at the various servos.
Accomodation costs, maybe not so much, you may have to contact the motels along the way for that info.
-
I'm talking about just the cost for getting over there. Not the other 48 days. And non camping options
Working on $1.90 per litre (fair estimate) and 5.9 l/100km, that works out to be around $11.20 per 100km for fuel.
Hard accommodation could be around $50 - $100 per night. See http://www.nullarbornet.com.au/towns/nullarbor.html (http://www.nullarbornet.com.au/towns/nullarbor.html) as a guide
Food is whatever you want to spend, but in 2009 cold drinks, burgers and everything else was quite expensive on the way across. (I seem to recall $17 for a take-away burger at Balladonia)
-
Pete that is not doing it on the cheap.
I'll just put down an estimate of my next trip across and take into account I have a trailer:-
Apart from food the greatest expense for me is fuel and depending how much fuel is in the tank will depend if I fuel at Home or wait until I get to Port Augusta.
My fuel stop map. https://goo.gl/maps/VPztX 2731 km @ 15 K/L (average when towing)= 182 litres @ $2/L = $364 so I allow $400 one way. Between Nundroo and Mundrabilla I will use the 20 litres extra fuel and refill them there and I will use them again before getting to Norseman. The extra 20 litres of fuel gives me about 720 km before I need to worry about it
Accommodation equals zero as I camp free along the way. I pay a couple dollars in a roadhouse for a shower a long the way.
Food: I have in the trailer but usually buy takeaway if lunch and a fuel stop coincide (rare) but usually buy in supermarket at Ceduna and including ice maybe $25 a day for one.
Four day trip for me:-
Fuel $400
Food $100
Total $500 but allow $600 one way or $1200 for the return trip.
Sometimes when I get back to Ceduna I can't be bothered setting up the tent so I book into the Airport Caravan Park for about $70 in a motel style unit.
-
Pete that is not doing it on the cheap.
No, but Marcus was asking about hard accom and pub meals. However, I reckon that $89 per day, including food, fuel and accommodation is cheap......
-
On the Border Run in August I should be going all the way across, so can see how things stand then. If you allow for $2 a litre fuel, a bit more than usual for food if you buy it and at least $70 for a place to stay (can be less sharing) that will get you close to an upper budget. Depends how much fuel the bike uses normally and the distance from home. Do remember there can be strong head winds so more fuel to use and less range from a tank. Fuel stops are close enough to each other for an ST during the day.
It will take a while to piece together the accommodation side of things as there are some pubs to stay at, and caravan park/motel style places.
Keep on putting ideas or links up, as it can all be edited down later :thumb

I was just comparing my version of rich to your version of cheap. Even my over estimated cost works out to about $150 a day just for the 4 day ride but probably closer to $115 in reality.
I had a meal in Mundrabilla and the cost was about $25 in March last year when I went to Port Hedland in the car.
Fuel costs were then at:
Port Augusta $1.52
Penong $ 1.65 (usually cheaper than Ceduna)
Eucla $1.96
Norseman $1.74 (surprising the Territory made the 700 km from Eucla)
Kalgoorlie $1.50
-
On my first crossing East West I refuelled at Border Village, then discovered Eucla fuel in WA, approx 15 kms west of Border Village, was 10 cents a litre cheaper.
I also avoid Nullabor as they confiscate your licence before you can refuel; there can be delays. Therefore after filling up in Ceduna, I top up in Penong, approx 72 kms west of Ceduna, so I can reach Eucla without having to stop at Nullabor.
I may take my trailer to the rally.
For those crossing at night you can get 24 hr fuel and accommodation at Border Village, Caiguna and Norseman.
Like Saaz I hope to do the Border Run in August and then ride to the west coast.
-
If we combine our cost for BR15 with the likes of Saaz it will give a good indication, we normally fuel at Southern Cross, Norseman, Caiguna and Eucla.
-
The figures for fuel below are what I used with swag and highway blades as well as a higher screen on the 1100 and Hoffy used less for the Ballarat run. We will update costs in August with the Border run back to Perth so members have some figures to plan with and it gives me an excuse to do the run. Remember people this is only a guide :grin

I like my bike and vehicles to be clean inside so 95 minimum for me. :grin
just a personal choice and I usually get better fuel economy.

Here is a simple breakdown of my costs to attend the 2015 Toowoomba Rally.
Home is about 70 klm South of Perth
Total time away from home 17 days of which 4 days were spent staying with a mate in Pt Augusta. (no cost) :beer :eat
Total time travelling and at rally 13 days
Total klm travelled Home - Toowoomba - Home 9,771 Klm (included a few extra klm Sight Seeing)
Cost of Fuel (95 or 98 RON only) $825.61 Yamaha ST1200 averaged 18.2 klm/lt
Cost of Accom and Meals $1478.40 Staying at Motels and eating well (no camping) Includes 4 nights in Toowoomba Motel ($420)
Costs of Motels across the Nullabor
Ceduna- East West Motel $85
Madura- $110
Caiguna- $105
Fuel across the Nullabor.
Go the extra 13klm from Border Village to Eucla (has 91 and 98 RON) for saving on fuel
Mundrabilla - has no Premium Fuel
Yalata - no longer exists as a Roadhouse
Nullabor Roadhouse - has signs on pumps requiring you to hand over your licence before they will turn on the pump.
Try the pump first as they usually allow bikes to fill up.
Hope this will help some of you plan for your Perth Odyssey next year
:grin :blk13 :grin

Just kicking this thread up to remind people to keep in mind Marcus's question earlier this year. Saaz or Lionel, if I can get your stats at BV then add them to ours we should have a reasonable estimate.
Are you guys stopping at hard accommodation or tenting it across?

I am doing hard accommodation. Lionel will be driving back with the caravan from near Bunbury, and was going to note prices

If you have an iphone, there is an app called "Fuel Map" which can help work out approximate fuel stops, and prices. I've been using it to work which way/what stops I will be making on the way over..
-
this is all great info and I love it.

Same for Android phones though. I have my stops in memory from all the times in the past when I've gone west on the bike.
Avoid Nullarbor Road as that used to be the most expensive. Penong Truckstop (70 K west of Ceduna) is usually cheaper than Ceduna. So for me it's Port Augusta, Wudinna, Penong or Nundroo, then Mundrabilla and with spare 20 litres of fuel next stop is Norseman.
On The Run have taken over the BP roadhouse at Ceduna and put Maccas or Hungry Jacks in which opened in about April 2015.
Mobile at Kimba went to (independent) Shell and new owners installed 24 hour card fuel.

Alan,
the trip you do is that from Adelaide or do you go further to Melb or syd?
i will be coming from Townsville and really dont know which way to go ..
i was going to go NT then down the west coast and then back the bottom way but really have no idea.
-
I am doing the Border Run and then going up the west coast, Darwin, Cairns etc so I can give you an idea when I get back. Just let me know what sort of things you want to know about. Shortest way is inland Queensland then across to Perth, 1000km more around the west coast and down roughly. Going all the way around and back from Canberra is roughly 15,000kms, but that is not hugging the coast all the way around Victoria and NSW.

I live in Peterborough SA which I've put as waypoint on a route from Townsville to Midland (Perth) in this map link https://goo.gl/maps/DfCcu I don't really get that adventurous on longer rides and tend to travel the more direct route but will vary the return route if at all possible.
and a possible northern route https://goo.gl/maps/ckFhh for Rally time (March) of the year you will need to take into account the cyclone season (until end of April) across the top of the country and around to Carnarvon.

I can add Peterborough into the mix if you're coming via Broken Hill
Caltex on main street 1.399 for 91. They have 98 but not on price board. Not sure if they have 95.
Bridgestone Tyre Service - 1.38 for 91 and $1.51 for 95

do the backward hicks even have eftpos?
-
Good point, better take cash...
-
I will post up $ tonight to give you an idea. The STs I was with used about 15% more on average at the same speeds. Expect to get your worst fuel economy figures due to headwinds that can be strong. My typical range has gone from 550 and up to 480.
Eftpos was at all the places I have been, but at Euston the machine was broken so cash only. Always a good idea to take cash just in case.
-
So... how much did you spend?
Fuel cost was $196.68 for 2135 Km as per my odometer. Before leaving I estimated for 2160 km @ 15 K/L for 144 litres @ $1.50 which gave $216 (better to over estimate)
Average of fuel I paid was $1.47/litre and used 134.97 litres with an average of 15.82 K/L. Towing trailer for 55% of the total travelled.
-
Marcus, you're better off using diesel. Its cheaper and you get better consumption. I towed a 3.5 ton van from Norseman to Ceduna (1,200 kms) without refuelling.
I know, I know. Norty corner for me. :spank

The route I took was not direct over. But to give an idea of where the more expensive legs are:
Renmark 1.289 $15.21
Peterborough 1.399. $23.02
Ceduna 1.319. $30.10 (but I went via port Lincoln)
Border village 1.88. $49.07
Caiguna 1.88. $38.48
Norseman 1.459. $30.07
So it is really just tha part after Pinaroo ((Ceduna prices) until Norseman that you that 40 cents more a litre, so just work out those legs on the higher price. After nundroo in SA no other choices apart from Nullarbor before border village. After that more frequent service centres.
Otherwise about the same as country petrol prices. All the places had normal card machines with payWave

Coming back from BV, fuel stops are .... Eucla ... About 10c cheaper than BV @ 1.78, then Caiguna @ 1.88, then Norseman @ 1.46, then Southern Cross @ 1.43. These prices are all for 91 as that is all I generally use in the ST1100. Accommodation was $70 for budget motel at Eucla. No heater or air con and no facilities at all. Just a bed with close walk to toilet block and $1 coin operated showers. Balladonia (which we used on the way out) was $140 for a 3 bed room. Bill and Hoffy had to pay as an extra person at i think $15. Coolgardie is generally next stop after Eucla (about 800km) and i paid $125 for a single bed room with 1 queen size bed. Bill and Hoffy paid i think $140 for queen and single room.
From there easy day to Perth.
Hope this helps. East of the border I have no idea. :-)
-
Work on $100 per day for fuel and food and then add your accommodation and you should get change.

Unusual expense for us was the Airport Caravan Park at Ceduna for $70 (plus an extra $20 a night if you don't have sleeping gear) at night for two nights. I figured that by taking the trailer to Ceduna with our own bedding we'd be in front even with the higher fuel usage.
-
I went a non direct way, but easy enough to use google maps from where you are, work out your stops based on what you want to do, then apply prices. I have been using 15% less than STs and on 91 Ron, so again depends on what you use. I will edit to put in $s if that helps
