"Opal" petrol suitability

Hi  guys.
Is the Opal petrol  in the Northern Territory suitable or useable on a 94 ST11.  The reason I ask is that on the upcoming Black Dog Ride Opal is all thats available at Glen Helen Resort so can I use that or fill up prior?  Apparently after discussion with a guy last night Opal is a petrol you wouldnt run your lawn mower on.  Thanks in anticipation.

It appears that its 91 Octane with some stuff removed to prevent a high from sniffing it. It should be ok in the 1100, though if in doubt take a bottle or two of fuel conditioner/octane booster and add the required amount on fill up. (or even use 93 or 95 octane instead if available)

Its the 1300s that can have a problem if only the Opal (91 octane) is available.

I had to run some Opal through mine on the WE didnt seem to be a problem in fact I think it gave a little better fuel economy ... go figure

Thanks for the replies.  If in doubt I should have the capacity to fill up prior and get back out, before I run out.

91 RON sounds low, over here we have two main ratings.


Ordinary unleaded – 95 RON
Super unleaded – 98 RON

I would be worried running 91 in the 1100, don't you get ignition knock?

Nope, runs just fine with no loss of ecconomy. I have records of usage, and there is no advantage that I can see from the figures to use higher octane. It just puts more $$$ in the petrol company pockets..

Paul, down here 91 RON is the minimum rated petrol specified by Honda for the ST1100 and is used by the vast majority of cars. 95RON is becoming the new normal petrol due to newer motors, particularly europen stuff.

Tasmania is the same.  Our normal unleaded is 91 Ron and I use it all the time.
