Title: New LED D/Lights for STig
Post by: ST2UP on January 23, 2015, 06:25:08 PM
I have been playing around with some power saving lighting ideas for STig but adding to the light foot print at the same time as I have some longer rides planned throughout the year.

Current low beam is 55W plus 50% 4300k Halogen with 2 10w LED fork lights as DRL's during the day and tilted out to the roads edge at night to light the road side well beyond the width of the low beam without adding to the length of the low beam.

Current Hi beam is 65w plus 50% 4300k Halogen with 55w 4300K Spot/Euro beam HID's on MCL's....10w LEDs also remain on.....here is the new edition going over the top on custom over mirror mounts, with a sneaky Hi Beam mod to save some electricery  :whistle

These bad boys are just under 7000 Lumens for the pair at 6000k and spread beam.....they are to cover the sneaky Roo country to the sides of the bike......HID's will continue to punch down the road although may change the euro to spot as spread should be well covered now  :think1

How much are they Chris and where did you get them from?

Will they fry an egg?

These are the 3486 Tech-Light in Spread that are also available from Jaycar.....although these are from Evilbay and $110 each delivered, so cheaper than Jaycar that is 200 k's from me.

Have only hooked up one to the deep cycle battery in the boat for a little play tonight and I believe they will do the job I'm asking of them to cover to well past the road edge 45degrees from the bike while the HID's do their thing down the road  :think1 they will be nice without the HID's in the twisties at night as they should put light through the corners and avoid those pesky dark spots when your layed over somewhat   :think1

Cheers

Thanks for that Chris . .  One other thing . . What is the diameter of them including the case?

I'm happy with my spread and spot from jaycar, but Jaycar are just down the road.

Looking at doing the mirror bracket (above mirror) for the same lights, but still   :think1

Not a big fan of riding at night but if I am going to accompany the big fella on some rides I may not have much choice . . . I have 4 spots on now plus the HID headlights . . So not too bad but pale in comparison to the bad boys Lionel has . . Thinking of adding another pair above the mirrors . .

So my aux light Farkling is now complete.....although is it ever really  :whistle

The Factory headlight globes are replaced with the Phillips H4 4200K 65/55 that I have been using for sometime....although I do have a sneaky switch that takes 1 High beam out of the equation so I can use the power on the LED's......the H4 High beam is totally lost in the LED's anyway  :grin

On the custom over mirror brackets are 2x 3486 Lumen Spot beams, under mirror on MCL mounts are 2x 3486 Lumen Flood beams angled out at near 45 degrees from the bike, beside them are 10watt Flood beam LED's  (my old DRL's from the forks), these are angled down and well out to the sides of the roadway, down on the forks are Clearwater 2000 lumen each Darla's on custom brackets I made so they can be adjusted from side to side as the Clearwater brackets only allow adjustment for up & down.....these a angled out at about 30 degrees.

Low Beam = 2x Phillips H4, 2x 10watt LED's and 2x Darla's adjustable to 50% light power.....

High Beam = 1x Phillips H4, 2 LED Spots, 2 LED spreads, 2 x Darlas at 100% and it AWESOME !!!

all have there own relays and switches.....so can be taken out of the lighting equation at any time  :wink1

The spot LED's don't have the punch down the road that my old 55W HID's did but they have enough distance penetration to see safely at highway speeds and well within safe stopping distance.....its the road side that I'm really trying to cover  ;-*

With 38 LEDs pointing out front you should be able to see Skippy before you hit him.
I think that's your intention.  Either that or impersonate a semi.     :eek

With 38 LEDS, you should be able to see the back of your own bike, let alone roos.. :eek :eek :grin

Nice work, it's always great to see someone fired up to ride point in the dark.   ;-*

I think the added bonus will be seeing around corners in the twisties.

Correct  :like and I run the Spot's above the mirror crossed so I pickup a little extra there too  :like

This is one of Jaycar's promo shots of 2x Spot and 2x Spread in the 3486 Lumen LED lights.....then in addition I have the Clearwaters at a further 4000 lumens down the sides  :like

I've yet to try it, but I'm thinking having lights on the forks might push some light into corners as they turn in.

Awesome work Chris, it looks like the lighting situation should be sorted now :thumbsup
You'll have to put up some pictures of all the lights working at night 8) :runyay

Thanks all.....I should add that the small 10watt Floods and possibly the Over mirror spots all come off with about 10 mins work.....they will only generally be on the bike when undertaking serious night work, wont be on the bike for general touring etc

Over mirror lights do impact just a little on fuel economy  :grin

My in-house critic reckons they spoil the look of the ST13, too.
I couldn't be bothered taking them off, even though I made the connections with plugs, because of the hassle aligning them.

I just unbolt the entire top bracket Bill, then put in the non split mirror housing rubbers back on......so alignment no issue, although I leave lights just loose enough that I can lean forward and adjust if need be.

I learnt to not over tighten driving lights from hitting Roos in the car......better to have them just fold back and need readjustment than to bust them when they won't budge   ;-*

And your critic is right.....they are a little gaudy   :fp

Final got around to doing something with the strong and practical but butt ugly Clearwater Krista2 brackets on my over mirror mounts.....other than being a bit goardy to look at they brushed the Bike-quip screen on raising.

Bending up 25mm x 3 mm flat bar to get the angles just right with only a vise and blow torch took a couple of false starts......but got there in the end. Undercoat, paint and clear and looks much more gooderer  :p

The RAM ball is for a future towing mirror, that's easily removable when trailer off  ;-*

There were some sevinas at BV but a show off did not happen as far as I know. To be continued. If I am. Going past on the way back it will be interesting to see how the Eric's compare. From what I have seen the krista2s put out a stack of light with more of a spit pattern

Maybe that's what I need with the Jaycar ones I bought like the pair you had and sold.  I'm finding the mount causes some vibration in the mirrors due to the weight of the lights.  However I do like the way the stock mount permits adjustment.

Let 15lb out of the front tyre.......will stop the lights shaking  :p  :p

Just had a few hours in the dark that gave the me the chance to have a serious play with the new LED offering from Clearwater......the new Krista2's in conjunction with the Darla's and 3486 Techlight flood's are bruddy awesome.

Safe to say my lighting project on STig is complete.... :thumbsup

I'm getting the impression that lights are like drugs.  It doesn't matter how much you have, you always need a bit more.

Your certainly correct there  :like

Took a few false starts to get it right.....but it's all done now  :like

Just doing similar looking for a LED light bar for the 4x4.....have HID spots for down the road, but finding a euro/spread LED light bar that I can live with aesthetically is proving a challenge  :fp
