Fuel range / capacities

Can anyone tell me how much is held in the reserve tank and how far is it good for .

Somewhere I think I heard that the ST could do 500 k on a tank full (with a tail wind ) how close is this to true ?

It will actually do 550 with nil wind.
The reserve light comes on when you have enough fuel for 95 km at 100 kph.  It's about 5 litres.  The odd things is, I nearly always see 4 litres remaining after 25 km with the low level light flashing. 
I work on one litre unusable, but I believe it is less than that.
Having said all that, the computer is not very consistent.

There is no computer on the ST1100 Biggles (well the ecu is a bit like one)

There is no reserve tank on the ST1100, but if the fuel light works that comes on with 4 litres or so left (mine has never worked so I don't know).  You might get 500kms on a great day, but it varies among bikes.  I try and notice what distance I have done at the various fuel gauge marks and work out if it is a normal, better or worse than average fuel range.

While there is no "reserve tank", I believe the light comes on when the top tank of an ST1300 is empty and only the lower tank has fuel remaining.

My trustee STeed got 490 klms on the way home from the Grey Gum Cafe Ride......

Filled up at Windsor, rode to Ye Old Cafe and back to Canberra via the Cement Path....

Sat on 1:20 wherever possible and still had fuel left, no lights came on so im gunna say that dont work either.

Maybe the White models just get better fuel economy....

yep best tank of fuel I have achieved out of my 1996 ST1100 is 565km out of a tank, and that was two up with teela.

but as a rule i get around 520-530 a TANK no worries

On the Southern Cross Run over a distance of 4100 kms I did roughly 21km/l  so that works out to 588kms plus if I could use the whole tank. In reality I have never run it this low but have hit 470 then put 22 litres in the tank so I had 6 litres left.

Great response guys thanks ... can I bend this thread to tell you about me ending up with CR9EH-9 spark plugs instead of CR8EH-9 which the auto parts store didn't have .

My workshop manual says that for prolonged high speed riding use the CR9EH-9 and we are going across the Nullabor so that would be pretty prolonged 

I am having all sorts of bother with my headlight globe high/low beam side ... a bit special it seems , any clues where to get one ?

Honda in Bunbury maybe .

"9s" work fine.  I've got them in Irridium.

I've done that trip a few times on my 1100 using OEM plugs.

As for fuel range, this year I've averaged 17.1 kms/litre giving just under 480km for tank (filled to the brim) but in since I've had the bike I've usually managed 400kms to the fuel light (no longer working) and that's what I work on.

The 1990 ST1100 I used to own got 420 till empty
But that was all stop, start traffic, carrying me (120kg) + whatnot (??kg) ... and accelerating hard off the lights (I love that feeling )

So (as the low fuel light didn't work) I worked on this figure being the worst fuel consumption I was likely to encounter

Next time you get close to the reserve take a 5 litre jerry can full of petrol with you and ride until your bike stops. Then fill it slowly and see when the reserve light goes out.

My light comes on at around 480k, having said that on the Border Run Wombat and STRay using ultimate and me using standard fuelled up together at Balladonia after Norseman, Turtle said we were all within half a litre.
Ray went from Ceduna to Port Augusta on 1 tank going to Middleton, don't know the distance but google will tell you.

I've done that towing a trailer at night coming back from the west (camped near Iron knob at 1 or 2 am) and made into Port Augusta using 27.44 litres for 470.1 kms. I had 10 litres spare fuel but never needed it.

My light came on today at 420km. 170 was country riding around York and the rest city stop start. 2000 ST1100P 50000km on clock. Hope this helps :-)

Following on from Yorkies comment I get to about 450K's till the light and usually 23 lts.    I use premium fuel with standard plugs 8 I think. Yorkie runs Iridium plugs and standard fuel. On the border run he had exactly the same fuel economy as me to within 0.1 lts per 450 K's except I put standard in at the Border and used 3 extra litres.    Go figure  I think I might be more rotund and less streamlined though. That leaves it open for comment  .

I think the state of tune / synchronization of the 4 carbies may also effect the distance per tank of motion lotion  plus the wrist action and wind strength not to mention the corpulent rider on the beast's back

I have been kepping records for several years now, so when I got the bike, I started with 98 octane as that was what I used on the ZZR1100. After a couple of months, I tried standard ULP to see the difference. Well the difference was marked, in that the Ks per dollar went up using ULP, there was no difference in range, performance or Ks/litre, so have been using ULP since.

This year the furthest on a tank that I have done is 441.9Ks, using 24.36 litres. This equates to 23.4Ks per litre or 67.96 real MPG. The best calculated range to empty is 669Ks, with the light coming on at 549 Ks supposedly.

These distances actual and calculated are for a long distance run at 110-120Ks constant travel in open country, using 28 liters as the tank size, and 23liters for the light coming on.

One day I will pack a 5litre can and ride til I stop.

The amount of 'clobber' you have tied to the bike definately effects the wind resistance, and therefore fuel economy.

Sorry Brock, I'm not sure what mathematical system your using but the figures you gave only gave me 18.140 kms/litre which gives about 51mpg

better check my spread sheet, or eyes. maybe some US litres got in there.

 

That should have read best economy this year was 23.9Ks/L, or 67.96 (Imp) MPG

Sorry Yorkie, started off as just brekky at Dome Mundaring...  then ended up as a quick slip up to Lake Leschenaultia ...   Then noticed fuel low so figured a fill up at The Lakes was in order....  noticed only 45km to York.....  i could hear the Triumph Cafe calling ...  :-)
Then back home via Spencer's Brook ......
