ST1300 fork seals
« on: July 25, 2015, 09:59:50 PM »
Has anyone had a problem with their fork seals only lasting about 2000 kms before leaking? This is happening to a mate of mine's 1300. It has been to the 'local' bike guy to be remedied, but keeps happening.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

I think he needs a new mechanic, only 2000Ks is ridiculous.

When I booked my 1100 in for the fork seals I was asked if I wanted the fork bushes and guides done as well. I guess with the up and down movement they will wear over time so after 16 years they got done.

Item 16 and 17 will give you an idea http://www.st-1100.com/st1100-parts-fiche-front-fork-st1100ax.html

I doubt if the 1300 forks are that different in design. Just wondering if excess wear on the guides are causing the seals to fail sooner than they should.

I hope the stanchions have been checked for nicks. Make sure the mechanic is putting in the right volume of oil, as overfill will do this. Streak just had the same issue after the same distance, so worth asking what the problem was when it is fixed.

Thanks for the replies guys. My research has popped up the same idea. I don't believe that the bushes have been checked and it is very possible that it has been overfilled. He is going to get it all done by a different mechanic and see how it goes then.

Thanks again

Grumpy, going by the manual (Haynes Service & Repair Manual, Chapter 5.1)  states:-
Fork oil capacity....638+/- 2.5cc
Fork oil level..........62mm (oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the  fork spring removed and the leg fully compressed)
Hopes this helps  :thumbs

At 132,000km I've popped a fork seal.   She's booked in tomorrow to have both replaced.

$346 later and I have two new fork seals. I thought that price was quite good.    However, I was shown a photo of my right fork leg (the one that was leaking) and the chrome is almost worn away.  The mechanic's report says  "Evidence of wear through the chrome coating on the leg that was leaking.  Cleaned up best we could but if leak reoccurs the leg will need to be replaced"    New legs from my dealer are $550 for the pair, and from Ron Ayers in the USA they are about $528 AUD plus shipping, so if I need to, it's probably cheaper to buy in OZ at the moment.

I might keep my eye out for some second hand ones from a bike being wrecked.    Wombattle need not reply.  :grin

I just had a look at Partzilla for their 2008 model 1300 and since you only need the chrome leg plus bushings I checked the price plus postage and it came to $AUD640 to your door so buy local. Blue City Motorcycles were about $546 for the pair plus postage.

Thanks Alan.  It looks like the significant parts price difference between Aus and the USA may have disappeared.

It's the falling dollar.

I did price the complete fork leg and US price came to about $US487 for one where the local price was about 1160 plus shipping from both sources.

You can get them rechromed but Andrew's forks sound the way to go. I wonder if they can be carried on a bike . . Could be taken to Balranald?

Hmmm, still working on this RTE, but if I do it, it will be with the trailer, so it is within the realms of possibility, as I think they'd probably fit in length wise; that's the tube and slider as an assembly....
