A few pics from Diesel' travels....
« on: February 22, 2013, 10:12:15 AM »
I mate sent me a few pics of our recent sojourn we undertook out to South Aussie...

This time I am in a few....  lol sorry for spoiling the scenery...     :rofl

At the start of the Flinders Ranges just outside Port Augusta SA

Standing over Davo' Memorial Plaque in the 'middle of nowhere

Stella and Growly's Boulie at the lookout up Horrock's Pass. (You can clearly see the Spencer Gulf, looking south from this point).

About to have our famous 'Bacon & Eggs' in the somewhat empty main street of Wilmington, S.A.

Diesel at the Border Gate - which is the border crossing of SA and NSW - just shy of Broken Hill

This is the film location of many scenes in the movie Mad Max II - Road Warrior - just outside Silverton, NSW.

Excellent pix, Dave.  When was that ride?
I know the first pic is the famous curve that is the banner of the FR site.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

The town was the SAR (SA railways) border station back in the days of steam and the early diesel years. Dad was either the station master or at least worked in the station around 1960.

Population from here is 25 as of 2005. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockburn,_South_Australia

A town called Burns (no longer there) was on the NSW side of the border but if you look at the map http://goo.gl/maps/V1sE5 you'll see that the Border Gate Cafe (red roof where hwy crosses border) is actually in NSW, not SA so the town of Burns might still be there in name only.

Back in those days State Rail locomotives and their crews only worked within their own state so engines etc were swapped over at border stations like Cockburn/Burns and Serviceton in victoria

Sorry for the brief history lesson.......
