Some years ago we agreed upon Ch.13 as the OzSTOC channel.....I think because Ulysees picked Ch.14.
Just a recap for those with UHF's
Ch.1 to Ch.8 are repeater channels
Ch.5 Duplex is the Emergency Channel (IF you have a Ch.5 REPEATER available in your coverage area)
Ch. 10 - 4WD Channel (started as the Simpson Desert channel and expanded)
Ch.18 Caravan/Touring channel
Ch. 29 Pacific & Bruce Hwy (Truckies Channel)
Ch. 35 Emergency Simplex channel (Not monitored regularly or routinely)
Ch. 40 Truckies channel (everywhere but Pacific/Bruce Hwy)
Ch 41 to Ch.48 are Repeater channels on the new 80Ch radios but Im not aware of any 41-48 repeaters yet.

I've never really given it much thought until reading this but as a result of this post made me read up more on this. Quite an interesting read, but why do they use a different channel on the Bruce/Pacific highways?
-
There are places on both the Pacific and New England highways where trucks could hear road reports for the other highway.
Too avoid confusion, the New England is on 40 and Pacific on 29.
They swap back to 40 around the start of the freeway into Sydney and around the Gold Coast/Brisbane area. (Unless it's changed recently)

In the West we use 50 as the Ozstoc chanel
-
And its a good idea too, gets away from those who still have 40 channel rigs

Any recommendations for a hand held unit ?
-
I tried hand held, and find they dont like the electrical noise of the bike, and their range is reduced.
I have been using a GME (in car unit) on the top of the dash for 5 years, it works well.
-
I am soon to be bikeless again for a unknown period and don't want to get a in-car install in the 4wd but would like a decent portable if possible ;-*
-
You've been bikeless for some time. ;-*

You go to the brewery, you taste test 7 new creations and the next thing you know a bike turns up from ebay. I didn't do it, i never had it....it's going back to melbourne. Can't turn your back on the master brewers for a minute without them grabbing your phone !

Channel 20 is used as the motorhome convoy channel
Contrary to popular belief, channel 40 is the Highway Channel, not the truckies channel.
I've heard truckies give heaps to non-truckies using channel 40. I remind them that channel 40 is not their channel but is open to anyone using the highway. Needless to say they thank me profusely for educating them.

:think1 all QPS comms went digital a few years ago :o

WA as well.
The latest GME remote mount jobbies can be programed to receive EMS channels via an app on your phone...
-
IMHO from the current batch of new gear that I see in my sideline occupation ICOM are the pick for quality but GME are the pick for warranty/dealer network and repairs and they can all breakdown regardless of brand.
I use a handheld (of questionable brand) on the bike because of its LONG battery life, but rarely turn it on unless there is a need....
For my personal radio choice outside UHF CB in cars/home/shed I use commercial Tait Electronics out of NZ.
