RTE & S - Maffra VIC - Macalister Hotel Saturday
26 August 2017

Location:

Maffra

https://goo.gl/maps/CTcjGhwbfho

2 Johnson St, Maffra

03 5147 1054

Contact:
Contact for this ride is Williamson - AKA Michael

This is Pub food, so if anyone has any dietary need, (vegetarian et al.) please let the Macalister know when you book in.

If you're keen to go, please post below!

Date and location to be determined, but three out of three think this is a good idea.

Quote from: Marcus on October 27, 2016, 10:30:16 AM
RTE Whittlesea VIC - Royal Mail Hotel Saturday 16 September 2017

Quote from: Williamson on June 08, 2017, 09:23:21 PM
This looks like the next VIC RTE. I don't think I can wait that long.

I'll see if I can get something organised sometime from late June to early September, and then start a new thread. Might be a bit cold, but we all have good winter gear and heated grips, don't we?

Methinks an overnighter to somewhere like Maffra could be in order.

At this stage, the date is Saturday 26 August, 2017, and the location is the "Maffra Area", however both will depend on where and when accommodation is available.

Gary has suggested Briagolong. I don't know if the Briagolong pub (https://www.facebook.com/pg/Briagolong-Hotel-287750744595345/photos/?ref=page_internal) does accommodation, I've sent them a Facebook message to check.

When / if I hear back from them I'll post an update.

In the meantime, expressions of interest, constructive comments, etc .... welcome.

Advice from the Briagolong Hotel:

Hi Michael,

No sorry we don't have accommodation. There are the wombat cabins, but that is a fair way out of Briag.

I'll check with the Macalister Hotel in Maffra, have stayed there (OZ Day weekend this year), clean rooms and sheets, plenty of hot water, reasonable price.

Stand by .....

Prompt response from the Macalister Hotel at Maffra:

We have 5 rooms:
   * 1 with double and single
   *  4 with 2 twin beds
   *  $50 per person
   *  Shared bathroom

I've already booked the double room (for Helen and me), I leave it to others staying overnight to book their accommodation at the Mac, or elsewhere nearby.

With only 4 other rooms available for 8 persons, you guys and gals better get in early to avoid sleeping rough.

If you are attending, add your name to the list, indicate if you have booked accommodation (so others will know what's available, or not), if willing to share the room, and re-post:

Attending:

   * Michael & Helen - booked double room, not willing to share remaining single bed

Mornin' All...

Though this ride is firmly off my radar (will be in the Qld sunshine), I has been years since I have done any rides this far east. One I do remember (which was an over night run), was to Walhalla with a largish ulysses group. Though we didnt stay in Walhalla, we stayed in a place a short distance away in what, if memory serves me, was an x workers camp for the Thompson dam.

I recall it had plenty of twin and double cabins (very cosy), and we were able to get both evening meal and breakfast, cannot for the life of me remember where that was. I mention this as I wouldnt mind another ride out to this part of Vic and it was accom that catered for several couples.

Another ride I would like to re-visit is down (for an over night run), and in around the forests south east of Mirboo North. Again have stayed in catered for cabin accom in those forests (again cannot recall where), but was very enjoyable country side to ride through.

So if any of you that might know this region of Vic have any ideas, I for one would be interested.

Cheers the can :-)

Just clicked on the map for this wondering where Maffra was and was surprised to see that Trøndelag was one of the highlighted places. There is an area of the same name in Norway, although I don't know what the Maffra version is.

Good morning Sir Richard of Sunbury 🤓,

going by your description of the place and its proximity to Walhalla it may have been Rawson. Mountain Rivers lodge is the name of the place, have stayed there on a couple of occasions on 4wd trips.

Hope the recovery is coming along well and hope to see you astride your white charger soon at an RTE 👍

Trøndelag? Check Google found Trondelag around 6km from the Macalister, then checked satellite view. Methinks Trøndelag/Trondelag must be Norwegian for clear grassy paddock.

If I'm not correct, I hope BG with correct me.

Anyway, back more important things, who's joining Nigel, Gary, Helen and me on the RTE&S at the Mac?

A group of us stayed in some workers huts / camp at Rawson ~15 years back, that I remember. Where it was, I don't remember for sure.

Last ride through Rawson, I turned down the road to the caravan park, it looked like the spot, but it looked like it was closed (the CP, not the road - although the plenty big potholes and puddles in the road and perhaps it should've been closed too).

I just check Google, looks like the CP might be open http://rawsoncaravanpark.com.au/, and it looks "the goods".

Then again it could've been JD's Mountain Rivers http://www.mountainrivers.com.au/.

Hey Can, remember 2015, you, John and I met in Yea and rode on to Marcus's RTE through Mansfield, Whitfield, Bright, Mount Hotham to Omeo, next day did a circuit through Falls Creek, Harrietville, Mount Hotham back to our digs in Omeo. Next day we rode down to Bruthen where we parted company, you back through Sale etc to Sunbury, John and I, home to Canberra . . So that would have probably have the last time you went futher East . .

Michael, I guess this is a dinner rather then a lunch RTE?

Hi Williamson, Jonathon...those cabins at Rawson sound as if that was the place, it was a time ago when I was with the ulysses club...time moves on. :wink1

Stopps idead is something worth revisiting again, I'd forgotten about that two nights of blue lights ;-* Trying to get my Wife to participate in a few more rides, so a over nighter (or 2) to Omeo sometime in the future may work.

Cheers the can :-)

Yep! The idea is ride, dinner, drinks, bed, sleep, ride ..... hopefully in that order. If that doesn't suit some, they can make up their minds re. which items they participate in, or not.

.... so a over nighter (or 2) to Omeo sometime in the future may work.

Hmmm ....... what a beaut idea, might need to be after Wooli though.

Sold! Should be closer something resembeling warmth by then and plenty long enough (touch wood), for these lifetime collection of fractures to mend, so I might be able to ride again.
