Clutch problems
« on: June 01, 2015, 08:55:31 PM »
started the bike the other week and pulled the clutch in went to let it out and it stalled, started bike again, and same thing happened again.
Bike has 85000km on clock and I'm assuming it's the original clutch. Now is it better to put it in the garage or change the clutch myself, I'm in two minds as to whether I'm capable of the job.
Can anyone tell me of their experiences as to my dilemma, and possible costs.
Much appreciated.

Check the sidestand switch ( its on the left side under the cover), or better yet check the plug is properly connected. Look for a bullet connector in the green wire, is it properly seated.

What you have described is the engine module not detecting the sidestand not up. Totaly different to sidestand down. Its how the police used to disable the bike with engine running (I still have it )

Hi Brock, can you help me understand the difference you are highlighting?  The way I read your post the engine module  is failing to detect the side stand position, but struggle to see why side stand down switch is totally different.  Would value the clarification.

The sidestand switch, is a double pole single throw switch (Technical term for a switch with two on positions, changed by moving the switch).  When the side stand is down, the engine is unable to be started, and the sidestand caution light is on. With the sidestand up, the light is off and engine can be started. There is a position between down and up where the light is out, but the engine wont start.

On the Police bikes, there is a bullet connector in the green wire (sidestand up line ). When the bullets are separated, and wired to/through a barrel key switch which allows the side stand up to be disabled. This means that the bike can be left running in neutral, but should any one jump on the bike and try to ride away, then as soon as the bike is put in gear and the clutch let out the engine will stop. The bike cant be restarted until the sidestand  up bypass switch has the normal position selected.

Hope this explains what you were after.

Thanks Brock,  I will rip out the Police circuit diagram and have another gander.  Thanks very much for the very clear explanation.

In this area, the Police and Standard are the same, and how the system works isnt obvious. The sidestand switches an earth that basically says sidestand is down and sidestand is up.  If sidestand is down and in neutral engine will run. If sidestand "Is Not Up" and a gear is selected engine stops.

Have you checked the sidestand switch yet?? Its the easier and cheaper thing to do.

Not yet, I'm still at work, and I don't get home for another 2 weeks only for a few hours before I go back to work again, holiday on Gold Coast.
The reason I think it's the clutch is that when I pulled the lever it felt softer to pull than normal, then when I started the engine it stalled.

Bleed the line first then, could be an air bubble in there.

Pete
the clutch switch is on the master cylinder but bleeding the lines and changing the fluid is a good idea. The upgrades on Pezzz's bike were tapered head-stem bearings, a timing belt and replaced fork oil. We practiced on his then I did mine  :grin

There's a small problem with the master cylinder, one of the screws on the lid has lost its Phillips cross head, so I need a screw remover tool to get it out, must order a new set. But why would it have an air bubble in the line, that would perceive there's air getting into the system?
Looks like I've got my work cut out to sort all this out !!
