Title: LED headlight bulbs
Post by: Rodd on November 18, 2013, 08:24:19 PM
Just spotted this at Jaycar and I thought you might be interested:

I wonder how well these would emit light from the headlight.. the killer for me is the need for the small fan.. fans cause problems in computers due to dust collection and general wear and failure.. otherwise it's interesting.

Neat idea!  I'll let you try it out!   :grin

I don't see the connector being compatible without a cut and replace, although it might just be the limitations of the photo- they do say they're H4.

I wonder a teensy little bit about the ADRs on this matter.  I'll wait for alans1100 to pop in with that.

I'm not sure, but I think the effective lighting may be a bit on the poor side, as the reflectors are designed for the omni directional bulb. The LEDs while putting out a fair amount of lighthve it directed to the sides mostly.

More detail about specs at this site.

As for ADR approval of LED H4 it may be to early to know for sure. There are a few suggestions that if they are approved then it would be similar to HID requirements. Auto levelling, washers etc. So it's wait and see what happens if and when the cars get them.

The new BMW GS1200 comes with an LED headlight option, and I think a Ducati does as well. BMW has experince with the HID headlight in the 1600.

The lumen output seems to be close to that of a 60/55 +100 or +120 bulb, so it is nowhere near the light output of HID.  I would like to see some examples of the beam pattern before and after before shelling out for the equivalent of 5 sets of good H4 bulbs.

here is a review of the hi/lo LED H4s  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW8i7FOEVlk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW8i7FOEVlk)

You would need the extra space behind the reflector as they stick out a lot more, and something similar to a HID ballast is also needed to be mounted somewhere.  I would like to see a proper test of the beam patterns against a marked wall, or even better by using one of those beam pattern testing machines.
