Title: Oil change today.
Post by: Brock on December 31, 2011, 10:48:58 PM
Did my 10000K oil change today (250Ks early for a change).

As usual, used the Repco ROF 135 filter, and this time used Diesel oil. HPR 15 Semi synthetic 10-40.

Already noticed that the cold 1st to 2nd change is smoother, no where near as clunky, and so far no sign of the cold engine clutch growl when trying to take off fast. All good.

I've used Shell Advance 4T Ultra 10W-40 a couple times but only çause I worked at Coles Express at the time it's one Shells bike oils.

On my last change at 132,000 kms I used some Shell Helix Ultra that I bought for a car that I no longer have.

So with a big trip coming up next weekend I needed to get the bike all gee'd up.
Fresh oil was the medicine.  I decided to try and make this the cleanest change I've done since there have been some abominably messy ones.
First a sheet of old corflute, then the bike on the centre stand in the middle.  Rag wrapped around the left leg and dump the lot after a few minutes engine run to ensure it was really runny.
All good.  I took a photo of the new funnel I have, since the ST1300 has a ridiculously small filler port.  Previously I used the cut-down pill bottle on the right which fitted in the thread quite well but required a very steady hand pouring.  Since the last change I bought a Flotool "Tight Spot Funnel" from Bunnings for $6.98.  The price is way too much for something that was manufactured for 5 cents, but them's the breaks.  Shoulda bought Westfarmers shares.

Anyhoo, it's the right funnel for the job.  The oval shape means it sits right up beside the fairing unlike a round one that just wants to pour the oil on your boot.

The bandaids have staunched the bleeding from getting that wretched silver plastic cover back on.

The oil?  Second time I've used it.  $18 on special at Supacheap Auto.  Buy three and you've got four oil changes.

P.S. I posted this here anticipating the oil threads will be amalgamated.

Yes they should be merged in a while.  I would have done it by now but I have crook as a brown dog with a virus, missed this weekend's ride so have to be fit enough for next weekend.

Mine's due for a oil change and I'm fairly limited in choice. Using a Repco Z411 filter (same as before) which I bought a few weeks ago.

The only choice of oil is either Castrol Active 4T or Silkolene Super 4 (bit pricey) though I haven't checked the bike shop yet.

I use the Castrol 4T without any problems and Ryco Z411 I think

I've had no problems running Castrol 4T, run it in all my 4 strokes. Reasonable price too ($33.00 at Repco).

After looking at this post http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=5539.msg62361#msg62361 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=5539.msg62361#msg62361) I might have another oil option "Penrite HPR 15 Diesel Engine Oil - 15W-50"

Just used Penrite HPR Gas 10, 10-50W in the 1300 and works great, less engine noise and smoother gear changes.

I will use this in the 1100 on the next oil change.

It has a "MA" rating for wet clutches.

Can you post a photo of the bottle for me?
Have just come back from Repco and they say that product is not in their range :eek

Oil change Done with HPR Diesel 10 Semi-Synthetic 10w-40
Will see if that eliminates my clunking and cold clutch growling.

Norma Jean had her 130,000 km oil and filter change today.  Used MOTUL 7100 Sae 10W-40 and a Repco RF 135 filter.  WOW, what a difference to the gear change.  First and second had become really clunky, now they feel and sound so smooth.  This was a 10,000 km oil change, but I might set my oil change intervals on gear feel from now on.

I finally got the oil for my 156,000km (now 2000 overdue) change over which should get done tomorrow morning. The Castrol 4T oil was bought from Repco for $34 and they only had the 15w-50 which is fine if the temps stay above -5C in winter.

Hi Brock,

Reading the oil articles, I cant help but notice that  back in Aug or September 2012 you purchased PM403 oil and were going to get some tests done as well, over time I expect.  Yet now you are using different oils.
What were your conclusions of the PM oils?
I am seriously considering giving them a try.  The threads on oils and the way Rocketeer describes oils has really impressed me.  His posts have seemed the most balanced, open and upfront, I have read on any forum or web site.

Keen to get your feedback.

Regards,
Piet.

The oil performed well, but the logistics of getting the oil to the West at a reasonable cost was too hard. so I went back to an oil that was able to be sourced quickly when needed.

Ive only just spun the old filter off and fitted a new one, topped up the oil using leftover from original bottle.

The oil is still quite recognizably red with no sighns of garbox clunking as yet.

I would like to get it again. :thumb

Thanks Guys,
As I am based in Melbourne I am going to give the PM412 a go. (15W40)
I ordered a 20 litre drum and will also use it in my BA Falcan as well as my old 73 XJ6 series 1.
I also ordered the K&N filters from Amazon because the price was very good.  Thanks to a headsup from someone else on OzSTOC.
Appreciate the feedback.
Piet.

Changed Engine Oil and Filter this afternoon plus final drive oil since it's been 28,000k after the final drive repair. Was going to do that last oil change but forgot so that's all good for another 30,000k

Used Castrol Active 4T 15W-50 (cost $35.99) for the third time and Repco ROF135 oil Filter for $7.50.

No issue doing final drive nor should there be but I wasn't quick enough removing hand away from engine drain hole and gave my left hand a warmish oil wash and being the environmentally conscious person that I am split some on the ground as well.

Biggest hassle was finding somewhere to park the bike. I normally park in the back yard on concrete but there was hardly a place I could lay on the cement without me being the main course for the local ant colonies. The space in front of the car in the driveway was almost ant free so that where I parked.
