Possible South Australian Motorcyle Safety Strategy

THE state's 170,000 motorbike riders face paying a government-imposed safety levy that could almost double their annual licence fees.

Jeez, talk about local government gouging for cash!, what a rip-off. And please don't be surprised when the cash gets siphoned off to pay politicians superannuation or travel expenses or God-knows what else! I know my cynical side is showing again but really, all these polies are only after feathering their own nests and to hell with the populace!
Cheers,

Quote from newspaper:
"A motorcycle safety levy was proposed in the South Australian Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 to fund road safety initiatives on "high-use motorcycle routes".

What they've done with the money in NSW and Qld is put up road signs warning the road ahead is dangerous to motorcyclists (presumably based on its accident record).  The target audience is far too focussed on their tacho and speedo to see the signs.  A classic I saw a couple of times in NSW was a full billboard showing the correct line for a left hander corner.  By the time you studied it you've run off the road or into an oncoming vehicle.   :eek

I thought I knew a lot of big words, so I figured this one was bs: "hypothecated fund".  Turns out there is such an animal!
Shows ya never too old to learn eh, Harie?

One worthwhile initiative here in Qld is the Gold Coast City Council's SMART programme.  It offers to brush up your skills during a day's training for the princely sum of $45.  Honestly, it's as good or better than a Stay Upright Course which costs $300!  The GCCC instigated it in 2007 in response to 19 fatal motorcycle accidents in their Shire.  You don't have to live in the Council Shire, just be a rider on their roads.  I do one of their Courses every year.  There are five levels, and if you are quite experienced they will let you skip the first one, but there's no harm in refreshing the basics.  It is conducted by professional trainers from HART (Honda Australia Rider Training).  You can find the details at http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/t_standard2.aspx?PID=6822

Even though it's so affordable, they aren't swamped with applicants, so they're happy for riders who have attended to spread the word around their mates.  I've completed four of them, and found them to be great skills refreshers.   :thumbs

It's obviously subsidised by the GCCC, could be by as much as $200 per rider.  Dunno.  Your Council could ring GCCC on the numbers on that webpage.

There are still vacancies in this year's programme.  Have a look at the calendar and give them a call.  Tell Ian or Karen that Bill sent you and you'll be a shoo-in    :wink1

Unfortunately, while ever motorcyclists are over represented in serious injury or fatal motor vehicle accidents, governments will use these statistics as an excuse under the guise of road safety to gouge riders!  I wouldn't mind paying extra if I could see some tangible effort being made by authorities to genuinely address some of the issues.  The same can be said for insurance companies, justifying high insurance premiums in relation to risk.

The only chance we have is to take responsibility for our own actions.  I think Biggles has hit the nail on the head.  Riders need access to affordable and more comprehensive rider training.  IMO this alone would have a far greater impact in reducing motorcycle accidents than some of the other initiatives I've seen over the years.  Unless we can get those statistics down, governments and insurance companies have all the ammunition they need to keep on fleecing us!

Cheers,

Tony

Any of you guys over west doing the border run in August as we are thinking about it.

Hi Alan,
I'm considering the Border Run this year as a "1000km in 24 hours" ride to qualify as a Farrider.   I note that it's 1077km to Border Village from Peterborough, so the distance fits quite nicely for a qualifying ride.   Are you, or do you wish to be a Farrider?

whoops  :hijacked

I'm not too bothered either way about the Farrider thing as such. At the moment it's just a ride for something different to do as the most I've ridden in the last two years is a few 600kms return trips in a day (Adelaide and back( Berri and back)). The last long distance trip I did on the bike was in April 2009 from Karratha to Calista (Perth)to visit my sis which is about 3200km return

The distance to the border from my home is ok as an overnighter without rushing it as well.
