The next big thing in automotive lighting.... LED Racks...
« on: October 19, 2012, 07:38:50 AM »
Apart from Adaptive Headlight lighting (which lets you see around corners when leaning the bike)....

Adaptive headlights

Looks like these low-amp hi-intensity LED arrays are all the rage now - and they'd fit snugly on your ST too...

https://4wdchip.infusionsoft.com/app/storeFront/showProductDetail?productId=316#

Comes in a double sized array as well.

Cheers, Diesel

OK, the ST13 is 38 inches wide.  Let's put on the 40" version.  Just $649.  Not much more expensive to what the FarRider dudes are bolting on, and they're only getting two little round lights!

You only have to spend $200 tops for 2 x 55W HIDs.  Growly bought a small LED one along last night.  It was very heavy, so don't know what the big ones weigh.

I was thinking of the cost of the very bright LED driving lights.

As we don't have steering wheels and lean to go around corners I don't see how these would benefit a motorcycle.
This is nothing new in the trade it's been around since the thirties, see Tatra.

The BMW 1600 has a headlight that points in the direction you are going, using some sort of gyroscope for moving the headlight.

They do seem quite expensive for what they are.  Main advantage I can see is that they come on straight away, so may compliment HIDs, and could be turned down to be used as daytime running lights.  In a few years they will be more practical. I read somewhere that the latest Ducati Multistrada has LED lights - anyone with experience of old Italian electrics might have the horrors at the thought of that!

Not knocking the idea Diesel, but they can do wonders with CGI let me see the real thing and I will believe it.  To be honest the way they have the standard headlight performing in that bit of CGI looks very unlike what I see on my bike. Proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say. So if someone wants to lend me a K1600gt for a while I will give it a good road test and get back to you.

Unfortunately I have not seen any real world reviews. Seems reporters don't go out at night in all conditions, and it depends on their experince of what is 'good' in terms of headlights. An old Australian review of the ST11 said the lights were great..and perhaps they were ok benchmarked against what was around then.  As I had decent lighting on my Suzuki at that time, I would given the ST11s light a fail mark.

I hear ya Paul - but keep these 2 things in mind:
- Someone said to the Germans "make zis virk!" - so it will!
- I see from the sim that the headlights are normal, this seems to be an ingenious AUX light that will provide a little extra (extraneous) illumination further around the bend than the standard headlight array.

Cheers, Diesel
