Hi-Level LED Brake Light
« on: April 09, 2013, 04:06:53 PM »
A few weeks ago and unknown to me, Heather bought a 32 LED third brake light for my bike.

It arrived yesterday along with the coolant bottle and so I had another project to do. After several try out locations I opted for on top of and to the rear of the top case lid and marked the points.

How do I mount this? The supplied double sided tape certainly would not be enough so I searched the supply of collected nuts, bolts and other stuff that somehow gets collected over time. Found two bolts and a couple nylock nuts to suit so that issue solved. The drill size sorted but I hadn't used the drill for a little while.......it worked but could be better, it'll do.

Found some extra wire that matched what came with the brake light and then I had to find a suitable wiring route. This will be covered with black cloth tape to protect it.

The point of no return.......Once the first hole in the top case is drilled the job must be completed.  Two holes done, sit the brake light on the top case and drilled into the mount from underneath on both sides. Bolts and nuts on and tightened. I left the double sided tape on as a washer and to hopefully prevent water seeping into the top case.

Does it work? ...... Bit late to ask that once it's mounted, of course it'll work. Back inside to the PC and checked the wiring diagram.....green/yellow is the brake light wire so pulled the connector apart behind the tail lights and shoved the wire in there and earthed the other wire.......yep, it works.

My soldering skills aren't the best so I left the wire in the connector and I'll get it done next time I visit one of my friends in Adelaide who does all this stuff with their model railways. I secured the earth wire at one of bolting points under the seat, made it all look neat and tidy and replaced the seat.

Yes and still works...lol.......one more night time photo to add.

That looks relly good  :thumb do you know where it was sourced from ?

The original honda top box spoiler brake light is just way out there

I'll have ask Heather to have a look in her E-Bay history.

Also thinking how to route lead inside the case and waterproof the extra holes needed.

This the same as mine but from another store. There are different sizes........I just did a search and the price range for the same item varies quite a lot.

This one shows the bolting point....same for each side.

After drilling hole in case from the top, I mounted the light, held it firm and drilled from inside of the lid while it was open.

Before and after night shots......

Thanks,

I haven't had any issues yet with cars behind me in all my riding life but there are times while towing the trailer that the bike lights might be hidden if I need to carry stuff on top of (rare) the trailer.

$4.23 with free P&H!!   :eek

That's 13 cents per LED and 7 cents for the mount and wire.

How do they do that?
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

I've all but finished this off this morning and hid the wires inside the top case.

Drilled another hole as close as possible to wire from the LED light and to the mount.

Next was to drill a hole in the botton of the case but also with easy access from outside. The exact location might depend on the design of the top case and how it mounts to the bike. I was lucky in that I had a place to drill and could straight line (well nearly) the cable from top to bottom.

Then it's just a matter of poking the wire through both holes and joining the wires into the electrical system. It's advisable to have a connector so you are able to remove your top case. I had a couple of wire connectors spare (one on each wire) until I can get the right connector (none in our town) and then wrapped some electrical tape around that.

At the moment the connection point is under the mounting plate of my top case and the lead runs into the compartment behind the seat. Lead is covered with gaffa tape and with the seat in place you wouldn't know it's there.

Once it's all connected and working it's time to tidy the wiring up. In the top case I used black gaffa tape (from hardware) to keep the wire mounted on the case. You just need to factor in the amount of free cable needed to open and close the lid. That part completed you need to waterproof the cable holes. I used Black RTV Silicone Adhesive Sealant.........dries in one hour and fully cured in 24 hours. Hope it works, especially the top one.
