Title: Fork gaiters for ST1300s
Post by: Biggles on September 08, 2016, 08:20:10 PM
There hasn't been much mention of leaking fork seals lately, but I'm a big believer in preventative maintenance.
Well, I like to think so, since it sounds very noble.

Anyhoo, the off-road mob are keen on gaiters, and I researched their recommendations.  The best ones apparently are NOJ and I got a pair from the States for the Strom.  But they're quite dear.

Then I stumbled upon a pair in my local bike shop that are also neoprene, large and the same design for a quarter the price.
They wrap around the top of the outer and taper onto the tube using strong velcro.
The problem was, they pulled straight off the outer as soon as the fork compressed and rebounded.
So I ran a cable tie through the gaiter and down around the outer which keeps it in place and lets the tube slide freely.
No more bugs and road spray on my shiny forks, thank you!    ++

And yes, those are roo whistles under the lights.  I told you I'm a big believer!   :grin

I put these neoprene gators on my ST1100 back in 2004 and they protect the seals quite well . . . They use a velcro fastener along the length for easy installation

Which bike shop did you get them from and how much were they?

Northside Motorcycles.
They've got a pretty good range of everything at reasonable prices.
The gaiters were $15, which is mostly profit for everyone, since they could punch them out for a couple of cents each and whack a bit of velcro on them.

Hey Bill, we just picked up a $5 set of roo whistles from SuperCheap Auto and I was am going to stick them to the underside of the lights too.  But Kate read the instructions on the back of the packet, where it says not to fit them upside-down... so they should be stuck to the top of the mirrors  :fp  Yours work okay upside-down, don't they?

I fit mine up the right way on top of the tip-over wings . . They have never come off . . I don't see why mounting them upsidedown would make any difference to their effectiveness though.

Speaking of roo sightings (we were, weren't we?), I was just riding across suburbia and saw a small roo carcase here:

Lock your garage or they'll be attacking your bike while you sleep!

I have had a wombat wander into my garage and nap for a few hours . . . . and NO I am not talking about me!

That area is fast becoming suburbia.

It's a long way from what I'd call roo country- or even bushland.
