24,000km Valve Clearance Service - where in Perth?
« on: November 30, 2012, 03:09:28 PM »
Hi folks, While I'm learning more about Little Miss STealthy every time I take her clothes off, I'm reluctant to perform major surgery on her just yet as both she and I aren't ready for that - so I'm looking for advice as to a reputable workshop that can carry out the 24,000km service on her for me in Perth. I'm keed to find out any good/bad experiences others have had, and any advice you can offer.

I have been servicing her at the Bike Doctor in North Perth with no problems (other than a welded on oil filter!). Without any other advice, I'll more than likely return her to them.

Also, given this should be just an inspection (not adjustment), what do you think is a reasonable amount of $$ to part with?

Cheers, Rob.  :blk13

Hi Big Ted,
 From Winston66.
This valve clearence maintainance seems to be a bit of a bogey does it not.
It has me a little confused as well,
My2003 with 110000 Klms up and no previous maintainance history available needs a look at also.
One of the local mechanics (Geralton) estimated it would be in the order of $300-00 for a valve clearance check,
and there should be change from $1000-00 if I just opted for the full check and adjustment.
Needless to say I was not very favourably impressed with this estimate.
So I have invested in a full set of valve shim kit (Hot Cams Brand) from the good old USA. these were about $90-00 delivered
The sizes go from 1.20 to3.50 in .05 increments.X three of each size.
So when convenient I will down load and watch the videos that I have found and that  are available on u tube.
Have been through them once already and the whole job does not seem too daunting so probably sometime soon I will be rolling up my sleeves.
Hope this helps .
if you get some more information  please dont forget to post it .
Cheers,

Rob, Im sure others will comment as well, but from what I gather from othe forums, its not really necessary. If the shop isnt familiar with doing STs, they may not do it right, and if they are , it will more than likely be fine.

BrocK  your spot on....   I have worked on literally hundreds of both ST1100 and ST1300's.  I have never come across any ST needing shims done at 24000kms.    From memory only a very few have needed done before 48000kms, even then it was only 1 or 2.  I've checked heeps with more than that, that haven't had any shims done.  I realise each bike is different, with different riders/riding styles and different oils/service life, but Rob, would be very surprised if your bike at 24000kms old would need them adjusted.  Checking them is easy, changing them is a bitch... :crazy

FYI at 24000kms I check them, and also check/adjust counter balance shaft adjustments.   Counter balance shafts can give a chattering under load and take off if their not right.  (Easy job)  as well as the other service tasks.    Rob, I should clarify - counter balance shafts are on ST1300 ONLY

Good Luck

My 1100 hadn't been checked for a long time before it came to live with me. I checked and only needed to swap two and add one to bring them up to spec. I don't rev it hard so hopefully should be good for a while yet.

Same with mine......Jan 2011 valves checked at 120,000kms (only time I've done it) and still within specs.......All I've done is changed the oil/filter every 12,000kms.

Is the check/adjust of the counter balance shafts part of the service schedule or on a need to do basis. My 13 seeems to make that sound at low  shopping centre speeds.

I checked the ST11 20,000kms after I bought it (92,000kms) and one shim needed doing.  Next check at 150,000kms (yes, I left it a bit long) 4 needed doing. I all cases the clearances were marginally tight.  If you use the metric or imperial clearances there is not an exact overlap.  The minimum inlet clearance is either .13mm or .005" (which is .127mm), the exhaust is .22mm  or .009" (which is .2286mm)

Greg

I normally check the counter balance shaft adjustment every 24000km on customers bikes (ST1300's) as part of the 24K service, most are OK but some need adjusting.  Its a pretty obvious chatter sound (almost sounds like a bearing noise) when accelerating from slow speed, especially on take off.  A screaming sound (Like belt slip) means their to tight.

Sorry I can't add a sound file, but thats about the best I can do.   Its only a 10 minute job.  Hold on I charge by 15 minute intervals, so 15 minutes (lol)...

Hope that helps.

Thanks Breharna,
yep thats the sound will have to ask dealership to check it next time.  I thought  a major honda dealer they would have checked this.
After all the bike has only done 55,000ks.  and every service done by them.
  Thanks Greg
