Reducing Mountain Road Motor Cycle Fatalities
Police from Inner West Patrol Group will be engaging motorcyclists and promoting road safety this Sunday February 9 in the Mt Nebo area as part of Operation Mountain Safe.
Inner West Patrol Group Acting Inspector Corey Allen said the increased number of injury crashes involving motorcyclists on mountain roads is a concern for the motorcycle community and police.
“As we approach the start of the year we have already had eight injury accidents crashes involving motorcycles. Last year more than half of the injury crashes in the inner west involving motorcycles occurred on mountain roads.”
“We have saved lives by keeping up the presence of police in this area. Twelve people have lost their lives riding motorcycles on these roads since 2003. Our presence, including strict enforcement and positive engagement has steadily reduced fatalities each year.”
Last year there were no fatalities involving motorcycles on mountain roads around Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious.
“We encourage riders to remember that speed, particularly when combined with rider error, is a key factor in motor cycle fatalities.”
Acting Inspector Allen said there has been a historical relationship between motorcycle riders and police based on road safety.
“There has been a lot of public comment about police and motorcycle riders lately. We cannot afford not lose focus on our message – police and the motorcycling community agree that road safety is too important an issue to be lost in the background.”
