Tent & Camping Gear
« on: January 17, 2012, 05:43:02 PM »
Hi Gents,

I am preparing for my first Farride, and i am considering the single tent/swag/inflatable mattress option.

but i dont have a big budget, can people reccomend what they use, and costs? and opinons?

I am considering:

for a bed

http://www.crazysales.com.au/bestway-single-bed-air-mattress-w-pillow-67401au.html

for the tent

http://www.tentworld.com.au/showitem.aspx?item=129730

but give me your thoughts good and bad!

That bed looks like a tight fit for the tent, you could be a little close to the roof.... :eek :eek

For ease and speed of set up / break down, perhaps a Swag and a two man dome for those iffy nights..

I got a two man, more like a one and a half from Ananconda. It was on sale for next to nix. weighs 1.2kg and fits in the pannier.

http://www.anaconda.com.au/Product-Listing/Camp-and-Hike/Shelter/Dome-Tents

I have a Hawkesbury.

Do you have that much room to fit that size bed into your tent?
http://www.anaconda.com.au/Product-Listing/Camp-and-Hike/Sleep#c=478&fr7=&fr10=&fr13=&fr14=307&fr15=&p=1

I use hiking equipment, that way I can fit tent, mattress, sleeping bag and stove in two panniers, along with food.

I used a 3-man tent and an airbed back in the UK.  The tent was a cheap Vango Alpha, dunno if you can get them here though.

What I did learn is, next time I will buy a tent that pitches outer-first or all in one.  With my last tent, you had to pitch the inner first and then put the outer sheet over the top - if it was raining the whole thing got soaked.

The airbed was just a single camping one.  I think you can get them in K-Mart for $15 or so.  We bought some a few months back to sleep on until our bed arrived - slept on them for about a month and they were pretty comfy.

I think that mattress in the link looks a bit too thick.

No idea about what you have but for me I always have a tent that I can stand up in. At times for a single overnighter I have a coleman 3 manner, but for more than 1 night its always a tent I can stand up in.  Theirs more room, places for your gear and if it rains the extra room just makes things better than constantly trying to avoid hitting the side of the tent?????? and laying bloody down all the time. And air beds are good

Just ocky it onto your passenger seat, put your sleeping bag on top and away you go. If you got one of them collapsable askys you can put that below the tent. If you do it right you got a bit of a back rest. Just remember to get some decent Ocky straps, like them flat ones from Kmart. Hmmm now you got a top box for stuff, a pannier for stuff and a pannier for a bag of ice or 2 and some food. That is if you have aST1100 that has decent panniers.

Hi Streak,

Can sum it in one word.........Trailer. Sooner or later if your planning the long distance trips it's by far the better option. Which is whay I have a :bl11

Oherwise,

My dome tent when in its bag will easily strap in front of top case. Sleeping bag in front of that. Not much good if the partner is with you but.

When packing air beds you need to keep them away from hard surfaces as it's quite possible to wear a hole in them. Even the trailer we wrap ours in a towel.

Keep the top box for lighter gear and stuff you might need along the way, heavier items in the side case to keep weight lower and try to balance the load. makes the bike more stable.

Most of it's trial and error stuff and a big learning curve.

Hey Streak, I bought one of these weather proof bags which I use to put extra gear in.  It's as tough as and straps nicely to the back seat.  I reckon it would be ideal for keeping all your camping gear together.

Mate I use a Hennessy hammock. It comes with a water proof fly, fully zippered ful screen net and weighs next to nothing and packs up to a very small package. Cost $200 delivered from the states. Works for me and a few guys I recommended this to swear by it so yeah my 2c's ;-)

Ha! you didn't mention:

The family beagle; the leg hair exfoliator, the turban OR the aromatherapy kit! Call yourself a biker eh?       ROOKIE!        :crackup

By the way - has that tank bag ever moved around Terry? It's a magnetic one yes? You have shown us pics of the washers on your tank bag - just wondering what sort of grip it has fully loaded?

Cheers

Hi Terry,

I notice the towbar on the 1100. I take it you don't have a trailer if you're loading that much on the bike.

Mind you after nearly six years towing a trailer with my 1100 I see in the owners manual today that the bike isn't designed to tow a trailer. :crackup
Rather funny considering I got a trailer B4 the bike. With a partner a trailer is not an option.

Diesal, mate, how many times do I have to tell yah that I'm not a biker, I'm just an old bikie and have always been one :thumbsup
The tank bag has never moved. The washers I stuck on the leathercover do the job really well and theirs a strap that wraps around under the bars.
Alan,I've had a Classic trailer for years, theirs a picture of it here near the bootom of the page: Link http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=227.0
When I travel by myself I never take the trailer, but from memory :think1 have taken it maybe once when by myself, and thats because I was taking gear for another rider
