A very Sad Day19/2/2023
« on: February 20, 2023, 03:18:55 PM »
Sunday morning 19th Feb Lindsay on his new GL1800 and his brother Ken on his recently purchased 2009 GL1800 were travelling west from Ravensthorpe WA.
With CC set they were doing about 108 to 110.
A car with a small U-Haul trailer on it was travelling in the opposite direction.
It appears that the driver lost control crossing on to Lindsay's side of the road and colliding head on with Lindsay.
The car and trailer then took out Ken before rolling over and ending up in the ditch on the side of the road.
I am very sure Ken was killed instantly.
Lindsay was flown to Perth.
I have just come from Royal Perth Hospital having visited Lindsay in ICU.
He was still sedated but has had his right leg amputated above the knee and there is some concern about his spleen.
He will have another operation on his leg tomorrow (Tuesday).
The above is my version off events. I was travelling about 500m to 1km behind Ken.
I looked up to see the car and trailer rolling over off the road and into the ditch.
It was not until I was almost at the car that I become aware of the extent of the incident.
This occurred about 40 kms west of Ravenshorpe at about 8:45 am.
The investigating dective rang me this morning having been on site until 4am today.

That is really, truly awful.  Our condolences to all involved.  It could easily have been any of us. I guess mostly we acknowledge the risk but never really think it would happen to us to to someone that we know.

Thanks for posting.  Tragic.  Trust Lindsay recovers.  We can never be too careful, but sometimes it's out of our control.   :'(

Go fund me pages have been set up for Lindsay
https://gofund.me/f61b10bd
and Ken's Wife
www.gofundme.com/f/ken-topperwien

Updates below are from Lindsay's daughter.
Friday Lindsay Update:
We were called this morning and asked to consent to him having surgery on his right hand ring finger. He’s smashed it good and it needs pins in to help it heal. He probably will have limited movement of that finger in the future.
His stump closing surgery probably won’t happen for quite some time but they will go in and clean it up again while he’s in surgery. At this stage surgery may be tomorrow morning.
Tonight he may start dialysis as his kidneys are still not happy.
He will remain intubated till after surgery (when ever that may be) and then his sedation will start the journey of being fully lifted.
No fever now so that is good.

Saturday morning update:
Dad is currently in surgery for his crushed finger. Hopefully plastics will have a look at his leg as well. We don’t know how long surgery will last.
He started dialysis last night and will continue that after his surgery.
My understanding is that the goal will then be to reduce the sedative and eventually remove his intubation tube as he starts responding to stimulus.

I will continue to post updates in this thread.

Saturday afternoon update:
They managed to close dads stump!! 🎉
We are in ICU. Dad has a healthy stump 😆 The operation went well. He’s still intubated but they are trying to wake him slowly.
