The Good News
« on: March 10, 2023, 11:22:24 AM »
Good news is I’m okay.

Bad news is the Honda decided to have nap in loose gravel in some roadwork, I fell off onto my right side.  CAT scan shows no serious injury, well apart from five cracked ribs.

I’m in Wangaratta Base Hospital, being well looked after.

Damage to the ST is superficial, fairing, plastics, etc, although probably expensive, and back on the road very soon.

Think I’ll have skip the Travellers Rest, a decision may be made as late as Friday.

Glad you are mostly OK Michael.  Bummer about the STeed though.
A man rides on his STeed, says “Why am I short of attention? Got a short little span of attention”.

You can call me Steve, with apologies to Paul Simon.

Gravel can be okay, firm gravel better, loose gravel problematic (as I found).

Perhaps I picked the wrong line, or a lapse of concentration, but it was pretty loose just prior.

Yeah, they don't look so good after a fall like that.
Trusting you are able to get comfortable. Any broken ribs is bad, but 5!!. Did you land on the end of the handlebars?
Do you think the trailer might have become unstable and threw  the bike?
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Yep that type of gravel with some 20mm stones gets real loose especially when it is bunched up from car/trucks etc, motorcycle road tires at the pressures we run don't stand a chance, I raced motocross and did cattle mustering on bikes before I got my first road bike and I still come a croper every now and then.

Glad to know you are sort of OK. Ribs take a while to heal, mine still give a niggle now and then 2 1/2 years after my accident, so take it easy for a while.

Update .... back home, mostly pain free (that's probably under control due to the meds), only hurts, pretty severely at times when I stretch out (to be avoided), sneeze, hiccup or cough, or laugh (but Kev's jokes are not a threat).  Main concern is keeping the lungs clear, so plenty of deep breathing and walks.  Just back from a 1 or 2 km walk to, around and from local ovals.  Feeling good but might be time for a nap.

Thanks to everyone for the good wishes and support.

An interesting observation about the contrast of the level of service and care afforded to our colleague Kev at Portland, and what I received at Wangaratta hospital.  At Wang, I had two doctors and four nurses fussing over me for 24 hours (late Thursday to late Friday), in a pretty new, well equipped (and staffed) emergency ward, and ambulance service transporting me (both Ambulance Victoria and Royal Flying Doctors, patient transport).

It seems that a few large piles of $$ of been thrown at Wang, could it be anything to do with Dan-the-Man having roots in Wang?
