Find-A-Town, Make a Word
The idea of this game is to ride and take pictures of your bike with the town or suburbs sign corresponding with the letters of the Motorcycle related word nominated in the game.
When you have all the required first letters to make the word you post up your pictures and get to chose the next Find-A-Town word.
To make it more interesting, if you are not able to find a town starting with a particular letter you can have one "wild card" letter per word, BUT you must take that photo of a town sign starting with any letter in a humorous way to give us all a good laugh.
Some very basic rules:-
- The word must be motorcycle related and of no more than 6 letters
- One town to one letter, no double up of towns for double letters in a word
- Suburbs count as Towns.
- One wild card per word, (A humorous, But CLEAN picture of any Town/Suburb has to be posted)
- Referees Pocket Stocker/ST2UP, All Challengers and Disputes will be resolved by them
Example: OzSTOC
Pics of your bike at say, Orange NSW, Zetland NSW, Sale Vic, Toowoomba QLD, Orbost Vic, Coutts water NSW.
Post the picture up and the word picture is yours.
So the first word, to get everyone started is: HONDA
Go Forth Find and Photograph!
-
Interesting... I'd imagine "Windscreen" and other long words might trip people up.
Also for double letters like the ee in windscreen, can we use the same town?

Angusvale
Damn, to be completed when I return from the Dominoa Rally at Angusvale next weekend.

Close Williamson, but it has to be the Town or Suburb sign, with your motorcycle in front of it
Here is a picture below (without my bike as i am at work) of what you need to look for

Find-A-Town, Make a Word
The idea of this game is to ride and take pictures of your bike with the town or suburbs sign corresponding with the letters of the Motorcycle related word nominated in the game. ..........
When all else fails, read the instructions, and then back to square one then for me.
And it may take longer than I thought as I don't think Angusvale, despite being on the link Marus posted, has a township sign anymore, or perhaps for the last 100 years. In these cases, does a directional sign post count?
-
Yeah I think it lists alot of dead towns... you'd have to google map you select from the list to double check
-

Hmm that is a question for Pocket Stocker and ST2UP, they are the game designers :)

What about:-
Hadfield
Oak Park
Niddrie
Diamond Creek
Aberfeldie
-
What about:-
Hadfield
Oak Park
Niddrie
Diamond Creek
Aberfeldie
That would work... now go out and get those photos :D
-
Ahh some great interest already..... :thumbsup
Marcus.......Good plan with the cheat sheet :wink1
Williamson...... Loving that Hotham Heights pic, that's one for the pool room :clap
So to be eligible it needs to be a Picture of your bike or your bike with others in front of a Town or Suburbs sign, it may be the Town welcome sign, Towns elevation or population sign, but sign that clearly identifies and or promotes the Town or Suburb you are entering or leaving. A sign on the local post offices that say's i.e. Omeo Post Office established 1908 wont make the grade :p
The point of the game is to encourage us all to get snap happy on our travels, promote our passion and enjoy the ride :thumbsup
Lets go explore :runyay
:beer

What about:-
Hadfield
Oak Park
Niddrie
Diamond Creek
Aberfeldie
Shyte, I could do those in my lunch break. Three of those are my old stomping ground, and one is currently. I'm not sure if you are gunna find a township sign for some of them.
Would a railway station sign do?
-
Below are some acceptable examples:
So to be clear the sign needs to be a sign on the entrance or exist to a town/suburb, if the sign at the railway station on the edge of town is worded in a manner that welcomes and advises you are entering this town that's fine :thumbsup
Pockey :wink1

Right, now I think I've got me head around this, so I'm trying for HONDA this weekend.
Heyfield - I'm sure there'll be a town sign there. :thumb
Officer - ditto :thumb
Noojee - ditto :thumb
Darnum - ditto :thumb
Angusvale - hope there is an "Angusvale" sign - wish me luck on this one. :hatwave
-
Looking forward to it Williamson :thumbsup
Don't forget you can play a "Wild Card" letter per word if you need it.....if you cannot get "Angusvale" in this case grab a pic of ANY town sign with your bike in such a way as to give us a good laugh as per the basic rules and your the winner :runyay and get to pick the next word......
Good luck and love the ride :thumbsup
-
Looking forward to it Williamson :thumbsup
........ you can play a "Wild Card" letter per word if you need it.....
Noted, but I reckon the "Wild Card" should be kept up the sleeve and played infrequently. And only if really needed, eg. if the next word is FLUX (as in flux capacitor). There are no VIC towns starting with "X".
By the way, Marcus - thanks for the town name link.
-
Look forward to your pics :hatwave
If anyone has issues posting pics up don't let that discourage you from playing the game, send them to pillions@ozstoc.com and I will post them for you.
Pockey :wink1

By the way, Marcus - thanks for the town name link.
Yup I had a feeling we were going to need it... I had trouble find one of the other states

Could only find one place in Austrlia starting with "X". Xantippe, found it here" http://www.fallingrain.com/world/AS/a/X (http://www.fallingrain.com/world/AS/a/X)
Google Maps is confused. A search reveals two locations, check this: http://goo.gl/maps/b60vc (http://goo.gl/maps/b60vc) I don't think anyone is going to a pic of "Welcome to Xantippe" sign here.

I can't do it, Oenpelli is our only "O" town, and I believe they're flooded in at the moment. I can do the rest within about an hour :think1 might have to use that wild card.....
-
So it's Sargent Vs Wendy......so we want a good clean fight....No eye gouging, biting or widow makers......Lets play ball !! :popcorn :popcorn
First to post their pics spelling the word HONDA gets to post the new Find-A-Town :thumbsup

Lucky Darwin is so far away from Canberra, otherwise I might be forced to let the air out of her tyres. :butt

This game would be soooo much easier if Toowoomba had suburb signs! :||||
Oh well, I'll just have to take a longer ride on Sunday.
-
Well we came close today :whistle we have 4 out of 5 pics using our wild card BUT when we went to get our "R" there is no town sign at Rocky River :|||| :||||
Fantastic ride though :thumbsup had a great pub lunch and a spending spree in an outdoors shop that had a sale on :clap
So come on guys get your pics in so we can keep the game alive :-++ We have our town starting with R picked with a sign and passing through in 3 weeks, SO YOU HAVE 3 WEEKS to claim the word !!!!
The word is GUARD
Pockey :Blow

Here's hoping......
Not sure if the 'wild card' is needed for the Angusvale pic - it does have a welcome sign.
-
Hmm,
Angusvale seems a bit sus to me......
-
Well Williamson to quote a favourite movie off mine !!!
How do you want it ? "Sugar coated OR straight between the eyes" ???????
Have to give you a " A " for effort but send you back to the drawing board for Angusvale :whistle
A reminder to all, your wild card can be ANY town sign starting with ANY letter at all, presented in a humorous way, so while I got a giggle from Williamsons sign on the tent it didn't have a town sign in the Picture.
Thanks for playing Williamson :Blow
Think you will have the next word choice after just one more pic :-++

Hmm,
Angusvale seems a bit sus to me......
...... back to the drawing board for Angusvale
I appeal, protest ......
It's in Marcus' town list:

There's even a "Welcome to Angusvale" sign on the camper annex - I went prepared on this ride to Angusvale.
-
Protest dually noted :Chocies
But while we all have no doubt you where at Angusvale in East Gippsland Victoria there is no permanent fixed into the ground Town welcome type sign like the other pics taken.
So it's a respectful NO !!! But a very easy fix to make it a winner.
I.e. Go to your nearest town sign preferably in your own town in the busiest time of the day wearing your wife's best race day hat and grab a pic of you and the bike infront of the sign :rofl :rofl that would make you the winner of this round for sure :p :p
Pockey :grin
-
.... NO !!!
The first chance I get I'm heading to see my solicitor.
Right outside his office is a "Welcome to Alphington" sign.
PS. I don't see the purpose of a 'wildcard', if it can't be used for this type of situation.

"A reminder to all, your wild card can be ANY town sign starting with ANY letter at all, presented in a humorous way"
You got the humour right. You got the name right. But you missed the key part of the "wild card". It has to be an actual town sign, not your residence at the site of a long abandoned town's site. :-(((
I'm sure your Solicitor will concur (for a fee). :grin

Can we please have a word without a "U" in it???? There is no town starting with U (accessible by road in the wet season) in the NT!

Use your "Wild Card" option and it can be any town sign of ANY letter you wish......one per word as per the rules......
Come on Wendy come out and play :runyay

I'm aiming to get out sometime this week. I only get to ride every 2nd week at the moment since I have a foster child with a disability week on week off. Can't exactly leave him home alone and go out riding. Can't even ride to and from work since I have to drop him off at vacation care on the way.
then again, we're being threatened with another monsoon trough this week, with possibility of a cyclone by Wednesday.....
-
.....we're being threatened with another monsoon trough this week, with possibility of a cyclone by Wednesday.....
You may have a chance to get a pic of the ST in front of an "Under Water Town" sign. :rockon

If it comes to that, the ST will be staying safely under the carport. I ride in downpours if I don't have a choice, but it's not my favourite pastime.
-
And the word is ULP ....
Mmmmm, is an acronym a word? I 'spose it is, at least this hasn't been questioned.
-
It did cross our minds but with only 3 letters to capture and trying to keep the game progressing its all good with us :thumbsup

And I was just about to use my trump-card and post pics of:
U - Upper Plenty
L - Lower Plenty
P - Plenty
Well, as soon as I had a pic of the Mighty ST1300 in front of the "Plenty" sign.
We'll lets keep the ball rolling then. The next word is visor. Let the fun begin!!!!
GORDO
Now just gotta get a pic of the Might ST in front of a "V" town sign, already have:
I - Icy Creek
S - Seymour
O - Oxley
R - Rawson
Mmmm? Viewbank (where no. 1 son and family live and only 10km from home). I wonder if there's a town / suburb sign there?

Unless someone can pull "VISOR" in the very near future we will change the word to keep the game moving :think1

From the rules at the top of the thread, it's a maximum of six letters, and the nearest town I can find starting with X is in China and I'm not riding there for you. :-(((

Rules, rules, rules ..........
Oh well, if we gotta have rules and X's (that's what wildcards are for) we can have a compromise. So how about:
EXHAUST
We'll await the adjudicators decision.
-
Rules....Rules...Rules.... Exhaust is not even a bike part, but I'll play anyway you scoundrel :law You dice with someone who is well travelled. 8)
Echunga
X I'll play my "Hells Gate" wildcard. I have no desire to go through the gate to find out what's there.
Hahndorf
Alice Springs
Upper Sturt
Silverton
Tailem Bend
OK? :popcorn

I hope this is not a case of premature adjudication - posting a response before the adjudicators had approved the word.

EXHAUST - not bike part, bike related.
Nonetheless, well played Pete.
:clap
I'll keep my Everton, Xanadu, Hollow Tree, Axedale, Upper Plenty, Seymour and Tullarook up my sleeve.

EXHAUST - not bike part, bike related.
Touche, although that observation might come and bite you. :p
:think1 :think1 How can I play by the rules and stump you?

Actually, all internal combustion engines (and steam) have an eaxhaust{pipe} of some sort, so word is approved.

Try OzSTOC :grin It's certainly "bike related"
-
Any takers, or have I stumped the the travelers with cameras. :popcorn

Even if I was to use the wildcard for "Z" I'm still an "O" short.......300 k round rip to my closest "O" town and no riding time DOH !!! :||||

-
Any takers, or have I stumped the the travelers with cameras. :popcorn
I've taken the eyes-off-the-ball here Pete, haven't been on the bike for a while and forgot the camera and 'phone last few times. Give it a day, or four - I might get out on Boxing Day. I'm short a "Z" also, I don't think I'll get to Zeehan, Zeerust or Zumpsteins and back in a day, so I might have to use a wildcard.
-
Yes, thought that the "Z" and two "O's" would make it a challenge. I'm off to Tassie after Christmas and might be able to get a "Z" to keep in the archive. :wink1
I the meantime, some other players might rise to the bait. :popcorn
-
OK, I'll play my own word and post a new and easier one to try to get some players out of the woodwork.
Oakbank
Zeehan
Stanley
Tailem Bend
Onkaparinga
Charleston

The Zeehan pic does not meet this criteria:
...... it has to be the Town or Suburb sign, with your motorcycle in front of it.....
-
Williamson, please allow me to plead my case to the adjudicators, having sought legal advice.
1. "Town or Suburb" sign has not been defined in the rules.
2. I respectfully suggest that it is most certainly a town sign, indicating that it is the Fire and Emergency Services facility in the town of Zeehan and not, for example, in Hobart or any other town for that matter. The sign clearly indicates the town in which the station is situated and is therefore in my submission, a town sign.
3. It is clear from my photo that I visited the town of Zeehan, and ahve produced evidence of that visit, in keeping with the spirit of the game.
4. I also refer you to my earlier post for "SCREEN" and the use of Eden Hills Fire Station sign for the letter "E", which passed adjudication by ST2UP. Hence there is a clear precedent for using a town sign which is on a fire station.
I await a judgement from the game moderators on your appeal and my submissions in reply.
-
Hmmm,
Close call, I will allow the first decision to stand due to a precenence set a while ago.
PEGS it is
and now its bed time....
-
Your people may be hearing from my people ......
..... my earlier post for "SCREEN" and the use of Eden Hills Fire Station sign for the letter "E", which passed adjudication by ST2UP. Hence there is a clear precedent for using a town sign which is on a fire station...
A precedent? Mmmmm ..... my position is that, that use of a fire station pic is acceptable because of the 'wild card' rule. To be truly acceptable the use of the wild card should be declared - that one probably slipped by the adjudicators.
I again refer the adjudicators to these quotes:
.... to be eligible it needs to be a Picture of your bike or your bike with others in front of a Town or Suburbs sign, it may be the Town welcome sign, Towns elevation or population sign, but sign that clearly identifies and or promotes the Town or Suburb you are entering or leaving. A sign on the local post offices that say's i.e. Omeo Post Office established 1908 wont make the grade ....
.... to be clear the sign needs to be a sign on the entrance or exist to a town/suburb .....
This may need to be settled at Toowoomba, looser buys winner a beer (PS. I thinks I still owe you a beer for the little grommet thinghy you fabricated for me?)
-
The addition of the Fire Stn pic was a close call....However what got it over the line was the simple "wildcard" addition :like there is even humour present if your warped enough to see it :grin
-
This is like winning the Sydney-Hobart on appeal in the High Court, rather than by being the first over the line. :fp
However, I note Williamson's concern and in the future will attempt to refrain from using "Town or Suburb" signs that may be controversial. (Is the precedent for the use of Photoshop still OK :well) As an aside, note that I could not find a sign at the entrance of the town of Zeehan and needed to settle for the fire station. I guess it's off to Zurich then to grab a photo that will satisfy the critics. :grin
-
And the current word is PEGS..... ;-*

I can't argue with that:

I was thinking of passing through Zeehan next year after the Ulysses AGM, or Zumsteins, or Zeerust - might be a bit far to go to find out there ain't a township sign.
-
This is like winning the Sydney-Hobart on appeal in the High Court, rather than by being the first over the line. :fp
Stephen Bradbury was granted gold after all the other competitors fell over.
There's more than one way to win! :grin
-
To kick this game back into life, which has not seen activity for nearly a year, I'll answer my own PEGS challenge:
Prospect Hill
Echunga
Goodwood
Stanley
If this passes adjudication, I'll post the next word.

Here's a challenge, which is important part of the motorcycling experience.
RIDER :popcorn

RIDER :popcorn
Pete,
This is a much more sensible and challenging exercise than some other silly game on 'ere that requires only a search in Acronym Finder and a slow process of elimination before someone eventually being announced a winner.
Now back on topic, would you believe that I have only one 'R' town in the Photobucket library. I better get on the bike this week (I have a few days off) and get some more pics.

I agree that games such as this which get members riding and thinking are a fantastic. While you are on the road, find an old pub and have a crack at the Photo Tag Game. See the following for the latest tag. http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=4216.msg1194534#new (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=4216.msg1194534#new)

The main signs often are not great but there is usually a second sign about the place that i look for that is much easier to park in front of ☺

Nicely done! :thumb Did you find a sign for Zeehan while you were in Tassie?
Damn! Hell Poop! I knew I missed something when in Tassie. Oh well, it looks like I'll have to make another trip.
:runyay
I have got to Zumsteins and Zeerust, not compliant pics though, but I plead my case when and if needed.

Damn! Hell Poop! I knew I missed something when in Tassie. Oh well, it looks like I'll have to make another trip.

I searched all the roads in an out of Zeehan, but could not find a sign, and hence I used the Zeehan Fire Station, which caused some robust discussion. :grin
-
Okay, are we ready for PISTON?
Over to you Pete, and whoever else interested.

It would be interesting to see this done within South East Qld.
Possibly within Greater Brisbane.
Just putting the challenge out there.

Pinaroo

Well done Pete :clap :clap :clap
Agree, even though the Pinnaroo sign is a "farewell sign" rather than a "welcome sign".
:whistle
Next please.
-
I reckon Pinaroo is within the rules....
"take pictures of your bike with the town or suburbs sign"
and
"So to be eligible it needs to be a Picture of your bike or your bike with others in front of a Town or Suburbs sign, it may be the Town welcome sign, Towns elevation or population sign, but sign that clearly identifies and or promotes the Town or Suburb you are entering or leaving"
I thought the sign was a nice bit of fun. However, the grace you have extended to me might serve you well in the future. :grin
The next challenge is TOPBOX

Some notes about these places and pics:
Tallangatta Valley - near Tallangatta (as the name implies), down a beautiful dead-end valley (for all but very hardened riders), lovely curvy, undulating road, no traffic, well worth the short detour if you have a spare 30 minutes up-your-sleeve next time you are in the area.
Omeo - I'm sure all Victorian riders have been there, and all that have not, want to go there, shame on you if you think otherwise.
Pretty Flat - it's surrounded by hills and mountains.
Bonalbo and Old Bonalbo - off the A, B & C roads, a lovely diversion if travelling in NE NSW / SEQ, between Killarney and Mallanganee. https://goo.gl/maps/atciQ8kmfQz (https://goo.gl/maps/atciQ8kmfQz)
Xanadu - obviously my "wild card", this pic chosen because it was easy to modify in Paint, Xanadu means: an idealized place of great or idyllic magnificence and beauty, this was actually in Harden NSW which does live-up to this alternative - apologies to the residents of Harden.

No objections or rejections in nearly three months, I take that as "accepted". So the next word is:
INJECTOR
Let the party begin ........
-
Just to throw some life into this old game, I'll post a solution, despite INJECTOR being an eight letter word while the rules in the very first post call for a maximum of six. Here we go....
Ironbank
Normanville
Jabuk
Eucla
Clarendon
Tintinara
Old Noarlunga
Ravensthorpe

Good effort.

I thought that seeing as it was basically only us participating, making it a little more challenging wouldn't be a problem - you proved me right.
To add a bit more spice, how about the no. of letters increases by one, at least until it gets too hard to find a motorcycle related item with 32 letters.
Mmmmmm, I wonder when (when could be judged when we have an item with the most letters) and where we will peak (where could be judged as the last town).
Over to you.

Well done Williamson, but I do have a concern with your Wildcard "A". Rules state "A humorous, But CLEAN picture of any Town/Suburb has to be posted" and while I fail to see the humor, previous adjudication has allowed this pic. In addition, is "National Park" a town????
-
Yeah Williamson- on yer bike and go find a town or suburb starting with N. :-((( :grin
"Any Town" is kinda funny since you Photoshopped a sign to get it.
I deduce from all the foregoing it's OK to reuse town signs in further "solutions". So I should be out there collecting the alphabet with a few common doubled letters.
-

I suppose "National Park" is a town. It has a hotel (it's address is 2366 Gordon River Rd, National Park TAS 7140), a caravan park, a few B & B's and houses, on the Gordon River Road about halfway between Westerway and Maydena. It also has enough development to have a 950m 70km/h speed limit between two "National Park" signs and 100km/h speed limits.
Some of our Taswegian colleagues may be best adjudicating on this matter.
If / when you are next in Tasmania, (IMO) it would be worthwhile travelling through National Park, not to check out the township (although it might be worth a stop), but to ride the Gordon River Road to Strathgordon, and back. It's gotta be one of the best motorcycle roads in this part of Tassie.
-
..... go find a town or suburb starting with N.
Could've used New Gisborne, but I was embarrassed by the poor quality pic.
(http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu159/williamson_photos/Towns/N%20towns/12baf46e-44d8-4910-a614-6732c6e5af9c_zpsra5ovjhu.jpg) (http://s643.photobucket.com/user/williamson_photos/media/Towns/N%20towns/12baf46e-44d8-4910-a614-6732c6e5af9c_zpsra5ovjhu.jpg.html)
Must get on the bike, ride it, take the camera, get some more pics and re-stock the library.
-
Having done a Google Map search for "National Park, Tasmania" it comes up as a specific location rather than a National Park. It has a pub, phone box, and the usual "town" signs associated with a change of speed limit at each end of the town, rather than the Brown or Green tourist destination signs, and in the spirit of the game, Williamson has produced the evidence of having been there on the ST.
On that basis, and also on the previous adjudication of his suspect humor and photo-shopped "AnyTown", I'm prepared to accept Williamson's original post for "SWINGARM". Let the game continue, unless our mods intervene. :thumbsup
-
As Stinky Pete has researched the place "National Park" and found it exists.

Over to you Pete (I type with trepidation, or is that precipitation?), I'm not really waiting on 12 letter word.

Yikes! My Achilles Heal is the "A" town. Not sure if I have another "A", having used Avenel (north and south approaches, and Anytown in a very early post). I 'spose I better get into to the photobucket and see what dwells in there.
If I don't find anything, it'll be a while until I can get out and about on the ST. This is because as of 11:00am tomorrow Helen and I board a big silver bird (well an Air New Zealand jet) for eight weeks in CAN and USA. There'll be pics and plenty from our road trip in a rental Nissan, may be a chance for a few short rides on some loaner ST, maybe ..........
Back to the thread, the big challenge is really finding a 13 letter word to respond with.
-
Enjoy your holiday, and perhaps in your absence another well travelled ST owner will respond to the challenge.

Well done Williamson. I wait with considerable apprehension for your next challenge, and feel that we are close to calling this game a draw.

Welcome back Pete.
Well done Williamson. I wait with considerable apprehension for your next challenge, and feel that we are close to calling this game a draw.
What's this? Use your imagination Pete, there are plenty of words to go. At least I've found a whole new list of car & motorcycle parts. A quick review found a couple with 20 letters, but I'll start with a 13 letter word.
Seitenairbags - did I mention these are German words, this is German for side air bags.

If you call me nasty names, I'll take it as a compliment.

Hey, that's my motto !
-
:H If you can convince me that motorcycles have side air bags, I'll give it a go, otherwise, I think you need to nominate another word.
-
Full body airbag?
-
:popcorn I'm still waiting to be convinced by Williamson that any motorcycles have "side air bags". I know that some versions of the Wing had a front air bag.

:hatwave
Dropped the ball, been busy, playing other silly games ......
The word is öldruckmesser (the on-line English to German dictionary tells me this is an oil pressure gauge). I think we can substitute an o for the ö.
-
If someone has done öldruckmesser by the end of this financial year i will buy them a PINT at the Mackay National Rally.

A fourteen letter motorcycle word might be a challenge, and I'm determined that it should be English (or I could just make one up that is in Old Valarian or Klingon) Will two words be acceptable to those who are playing the game? If so, we still might get to 26 letters. :grin
-
2 words,26 letters = 2 Pints at Mackay. :beer :beer
If that's not motivation for Mr Glimt i don't know what is.
Needless to say(but i'm saying it anyway) the same town can't be used more than once.
-
..... Will two words be acceptable to those who are playing the game? If so, we still might get to 26 letters. :grin
Yes. But a hyphenated word would be better, more appropriate than two.
-
So do we have a current word?
-
So do we have a current word?
This game has stalled a bit. Since Williamson and I were the only players, we decided to add one letter to the challenge each time. I reluctantly met Wilimason's last challenge of thirteen letters with a German word for "oil pressure guage", not convinced that a foreign language word is appropriate. We had a chat at Halls Gap and decided that two English words should be OK, so it's my challenge to nominate a two word motorcycle term of fourteen letters. If other players are keen to be involved, I'm happy to revert to the original rules of a six letter motorcycle term, and step back from using my extensive library of Town Letter Photos to give others a go at completing the challenges. I've been a bit slack and not given any attention to this game lately.
-
.... happy to revert to the original rules of a six letter motorcycle term, and step back from using my extensive library of Town Letter Photos .....
Me too! Using more than six letters was using up my library too quick.
-
He we go then. Williamson and I will take a break from blitzing this game to give others a go, so the next six word challenge is....
CHAINS

VALVES will be difficult, I only have one 'V' town in my library, and I've already used it. Time to go for a ride methinks. Only problem is I will be away for 10 days, taking the RAV4, won't get any bike pics until weekend of 3 & 4 February.
-
I must admit, I don't have any V's (in photos I have checked). I struggled to find an H despite knowing off the top of my head a dozen places starting with H that I know I have been to and taken photos (but no signs).
-
I have three "v"s but aren't playing for the time being. Let's see who else bobs up and can complete the current challenge which is VALVES
-
Have the route planned to make the word, very straightforward, just no time to do it.
-
I see "Ibusuki" but not sure how we get to allow "Nagashima" since it is an English forum after all.
I went out this arvo, hunting. Too many suburbs and even local small towns have no signs. Frustrating. Plenty of business signs, but that's not the game.
I found an "N" for chains but it was on a round-about and I wasn't stopping there after having a Copper pull up beside me at an earlier sign and point out a "No Standing" (i.e. an "S" with a slash) sign 5 metres behind me. He let me go but it sure adds to the challenge! Funnily, in the time it took him to explain my sin, (I had to take my helmet off to hear him across the car) he had accumulated two vehicles behind him on what is a fairly quiet street.
Good luck with the "Vs" Shillas. There are only three widely spread across Brisbane, and one of those is only a locality, not a suburb or town.
-

Careful what you ask for!
-
Some very basic rules:-
- One town to one letter, no double up of towns for double letters in a word
- One wild card per word, (A humorous, But CLEAN picture of any Town/Suburb has to be posted)
Does Vale View count as a double up? We have a Valley View here and I think there was a Victoria Valley near Halls Gap, although I didn't see a sign for the latter when I went there.

Mmmmm ........ a bit sus!!
The idea of this game is to ride and take pictures of your bike with the town or suburbs sign corresponding with the letters of the Motorcycle related word nominated in the game.
I suppose if one squints for a long, long time and imagines that they can see a reflected view of your motorbike in your helmet visor, they may be able to convince themselves that this pic is eligible.

I've got one of those USB port multipliers that gives me 4 ports off one. I needed it when I got a USB printer. The downside is when it's turned on it throws the lappy's second port that I use frequently from F drive to G drive which upsets a back-up batch file that I run.

I have one of those two. It played havoc with the mouse until I put the mouse in it's own port.

Quite possible- if it was around 8:40. I was headed to meet a bunch at Crows Nest, thence on to Bunya Mountain. I picked up "Quinalow". Is there a bike-related word with a "Q" in it? :runyay

I too have a Q (and an X). I hoped to get Zumsteins at the Halls Gap RTE but couldn't find a locality sign.
Quick shifter, quad lock...

Waaay too many letters! :p
There's a dispensation for lack of locality sign if you can find a Rural Firebrigade, district Hall or similar with the sign.
But you get shamed if someone can find a genuine roadside sign for the location.

HOOTERS
Whilst we are waiting on a towns response ........
An item high on the priorities on our 2017 CAN / USA trip was a visit to a Hooters. I had a rush of blood, when out of the corner of my eyes I caught site of a Hooters sign on the side of a small town country café in Kremmling CO. Braked hard, reversed back to the car park entrance, Helen wanted to know why? This why ........
(http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu159/williamson_photos/USA%20CAN%202017/Small%20Towns/IMG_1879_zps33pt3tdp.jpg) (http://s643.photobucket.com/user/williamson_photos/media/USA%20CAN%202017/Small%20Towns/IMG_1879_zps33pt3tdp.jpg.html)
Excitement turned to disappointment and Helen's amusement, when I read the sign carefully, but we were stopped, needed a coffee fix, so went inside.
It may not have been a real Hooters, but the talent was good. So was the coffee.
Similar thing happened a couple days later in Rifle, CO. Stopped in the main street for lunch and spotted this out the corner of my eye.

End hi-jack, and now return to normal viewing.

Mmmmm ......... we seem to have departed from the original intent and challenge of the game, quite a bit. A little effort into "Widlcards", eg:
(http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu159/williamson_photos/Towns/A%20towns/AnyTownSign_zpscryrcyig.jpg) (http://s643.photobucket.com/user/williamson_photos/media/Towns/A%20towns/AnyTownSign_zpscryrcyig.jpg.html)

....... is after all only a little effort. Come on fellas, raise the bar.
-
Here's the original rule on use of a wildcard, just as a reminder.
"One wild card per word, (A humorous, But CLEAN picture of any Town/Suburb has to be posted)"

I did say a wild card as there are four Evanston suburbs in said area, none of which had proper signs. Believe me, I looked. The sign I posted was in Evanston's borders. Where was your O?
no more wild cards from me

I used a bona fide wildcard, defined as a "humorous, But CLEAN picture of any Town/Suburb"- that bike procession through town had a humorous situation of a dog in a trike.
There were no signs for our suburb "Virginia" when I needed a "V" but I just let someone else have it while I looked for a "V" place sign.
Simples.

That's weird! I can see them. I've switched to Imgur which is much easier and faster than Photoshop.

Anyone else got feedback please?

I thought you could only use each photo once.
-
Here's the rules from the first post in this thread.....
"Some very basic rules:-
- The word must be motorcycle related and of no more than 6 letters
- One town to one letter, no double up of towns for double letters in a word
- Suburbs count as Towns.
- One wild card per word, (A humorous, But CLEAN picture of any Town/Suburb has to be posted)
- Referees Pocket Stocker/ST2UP, All Challengers and Disputes will be resolved by them"
Town names can be used more than once, but you can't use two signs for the one town in one challenge. ++
-
Point taken. In that case I have got the whole alphabet, with the exception of Z.
-
I misunderstood also, and have assiduously marked the names I have as being "used".
Otherwise we just sit here and chuck the same old photos up without going for a ride to get new ones. So why did you get three "V"s, Pete, when there's unlikely to be a six letter bike part with three Vs in it?
I suspect that's what Williamson thought also, as he was mumbling about needing to go for a ride to collect vowels (as we all do, since they are far less common than consonants, especially "S" and "B" around here.

Very odd. I'm using Chrome which is usually reliable. I checked Internet Explorer and it's visible there.
So it's a Chrome problem. Dunno why it's just that one photo, though. Is it hosted at a different place?
-
........ Is it hosted at a different place?
That suite of pics are hosted on Photobucket (PB). I usually use PB, have for years and years. Went to IMGBB for a little while around 12 month when PB were playing funny buggers, we have kissed and made up now though. I find PB easier to use than IMGBB.

My old photobucket ones are showing up again too, but I haven't opened photobucket since their anti hotlinking stance. These days I use the site that was created by one of the Ozstoc members (well In think it was).

New word:
LUBE

It's ironic, but I've been waiting for the game to move on so I could use some of my 360 town sign photos. A four letter word comes up and I don't have an "L"! :'(
I'll try to rectify that ASAP.
-
I have few L's but a shortage of R's. I went to Rose Park to get that one.
-
So here's the repaired post. Now everyone can feel better. I certainly do! :grin

Goodo. One observation. Direction signs like Evanston are a dime a dozen. They're not the town signs we struggle to get after seeing plenty of the direction and direction with distance signs.
Whereas road name signs are rare. :nahnah

I know- I know. I was desperate having ridden every street leading into the suburb. I'm trying to keep the game active...
I'll replace the letter when I grab an "L", hopefully this weekend. :-[

OK kiddies, Reply #404 has been repaired. I had a chance to go over the south side of the river. It was a bit like going to Africa- that's the Logan demographic that I observed. I do realise that if I was seeking an "S" I would have found a different cultural group in nearby Sunnybank.
-
I currently need an I. There were none in Inkerman on my last two visits, I wasn't on the bike when we went to Inglewood on weekend and football season is over so shan't be visiting Ingle Farm for a while. Ironbank or Inman Valley are my two closests after work. If the weather is better tomorrow...

Very brave venturing to the Southside...Little Mountain or Landers Shoot not viable???
Logan is closer than both those (even though it cost me $2.50 to return via the Gateway Arterial). I'd not heard of Landers Shoot before. I'll have a look next time I'm up that way. It's a good excuse to go for a ride into some very nice country. And The Bride is OK with it if I take her anywhere for tea and scones. :whistle

Next word: RISERS
-
Ahhmmmm ........ might need to lodge an appeal, or at least seek some clarification.
- Central Darling Shire - if it looks like a Shire, sound like a Shire, it's probably a Shire - not a town or suburb. Having said that, I've slipped in a city or three, but a not Shire.
- Gleneagle pic - can't see a motorcycle, can see a screen but the lower RH corner has what appears to be the border of a car windscreen. Might need a front on pic of the said motorcycle screen to be sure, to be sure.
-
Re: Shires (in Australia)
Shires are generally functionally indistinguishable from towns, borough, municipalities, or cities.
Re: Gleneagle
What you see is the screen of my bike (the black bit in the bottom right corner), but my mate's bike is also in the picture behind the white ute.
-
Just got in an hour or so ago with a bunch of Town and Suburb signs in the bag. I have 10 day's worth of stuff to catch up on, but will be onto the photos ASAP.
I take Williamson's points on board, but I'm just glad to see the game moving again. We cut each other a bit of slack in the spirit of the game and abide by our own standards. At least there aren't any wildcard pix there, so in the absence of an official adjudicator I'm willing to say it's a fair spelling.
If we are to be pedantic, the title says "Town" and we've broadened it to Suburbs and Cities. It's a bit of a stretch to call a shire a town. Municipality yes, borough (sounds like something SA would have) maybe, but shires are a district encompassing potentially numerous towns and geographical features.
Anyhoo, I'll be along soon, unless Williamson or Pete beat me to it.
And anyone else willing to look weird stopping in hopeless locations photographing signs- please join in. :thumbs
You can reuse towns that have already been used by others- just put your own bike in the pic. You can use different signs from the same town. In the interest of not having a static collection that you just keep recycling, there's an understanding that once you use a town's sign, you have to go looking for another sign with the required initial letter, and your "used" pic gets filed for another occasion.
The rules are up there somewhere- there's provision for a Wildcard- check the parameters up there... :grin
-

My quote was from wikipedia which says that South Australia's equvilant of a shire is called a district which are all considered to be LGA's. An old term for areas here were called Hundreds. I don't think I have seen a borough in Australia.

It's Olde Englishe.
The historical area Mary Borough in Queensland became the city of Maryborough.

Re: Shires (in Australia)

I think we might have to agree, to disagree on that matter. But seeing as I seem to be out on a limb and by myself on this one, I'll let this one go (except for some comments on boroughs below to learn Bill something).

Mmmmm ....... as above, the original thread; http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=5610.0 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=5610.0)
An extract: The idea of this game is to ....... take pictures of your bike with the ....... sign.
IMHO, a pic of an almost indistinguable part of a bike, or a pic someone else's bike are not in the spirit of the game.
Boroughs
Having worked with or at local government in Victoria since the mid 70's, this something I know a little about. In Victoria we used to have 210 Councils. In 1994, the Kennett Government dissolved the 210 councils and created 78 new councils. Incidentally he also sacked 1,600 elected councillors - so it wasn't so bad after all. In 2002, the Shire of Delatite was split into the Rural City of Benalla and the Shire of Mansfield, so we now have 79 Councils.
According to my Victorian Municipal Directory 1986, the 210 Councils included Eaglehawk Borough, Kerang Borough, Port Fairy Borough, Queenscliffe Borough, Sebastopol Borough and Wonthaggi Borough. Wikipedia now tells us that the Borough of Queenscliffe (don't why the name switcharoo) is now the only Borough left in Victoria.
We also had a City of Maryborough in Victoria, this was proclaimed in 1857 (before the City of Maryborough in Queensland which was proclaimed in 1861). The City of Maryborough merged with the Shire of Bet Bet (near our Dunolly RTE earlier this year) and the Shire of Tullaroop in 1995.

"Sandgate" almost cost me a ticket because a Cop pulled up beside me and was going on about something. I told him I couldn't hear him and proceeded to take the helmet off. There were cars backing up behind him. It turned out I was stopped too close to a round-about. :crazy
-
..... stopped too close to a round-about.
Too close to a roundabout? Mind you, it can be risky asking a Police officer, "and which regulation would that be?" In VIC, that might end up costing more than just time.
-
You look like you're well off the road to me.
-

I'm actually in a bicycle lane, which is probably an offence.

I had a funny one south of Kempsey a couple of years ago when I was pulled over for one of the sins I was caught out committing. The Cop spent literally 15 minutes sitting in his car going through his book of infringements looking for the offence and associated penalty and finally let me off with the warning that if I did "it" again, he'd book me. I wasn't sure it was even an offence, but another Copper told me since that it is in the book, but seldom seen.
