One of my favourite derelict buildings,  interesting inside as well, though definitely not safe no.

My first thought was how sad some these South Aussies must be, but then I remembered ......



If you have some favourites Michael, you may want to add this one to your bucket list.  It has some very strong heritage and once was the home of a youngster who went on to become very famous.

I think that is the shadow of the Mighty CB1300 in the lower foreground, if I thought I could convince the masses, I would have used it in the "Where Is" thread.

This is the picture from the Where Is This? thread.  I've probably got a few good ones lying around so shall have a look when I have a few minutes to myself at home (doesn't happen often).

Well both the derelict buildings so far, the Post Office and Ned Kelly's cottage are in Victoria, so not sure what you're implying about SA.

When ever I see places like those above I think I would like to wonder around Australia taking photos of similar places and trying to obtain their history to put in to a book. South Australia certainly has a lot of them.

I agree with WAG- there's a derelict stone building in every roadside paddock in SA!

One of our more iconic ones, Burra House, featured on Midnight Oil's Diesel & Dust album.



We built more out of stone than timber, which is why we probably have more older buildings. And unlike some places, we don't knock down everything as soon as it's considered "old"

If anything was implied it was positivvevvevvve. SA certanly has well preseved buildings almost everywhere that are looked after and treasured. The dry climate helps I am sure but us foreigners notice them because largely we don’t have many. I like ve towns like Burra and there are lots like that. Even Peterborough has some lovely old buildings. I have family roots in SA on dads side so I am almost a dual citizen.

Yes, a beautiful, well preserved town.

Stopped for lunch on one trip, nice café in the old theatre, wobbly tables on the slopping theatre floor added to the charm and quaintness.

The canny SA farmers being of frugal stock would remove the roof of any building no longer in use to ensure rates werent charged against them. Entirely understandable but not great for preserving heritage.

Interesting, seems more likely than what I was told, that is was to stop people from legally squatting in them.

No shortage of abandoned and or derelict building in the US of A, there are even some abandoned, derelict townships.  Here are a few pic of Shoshoni WY.  No doubt a once proud township that has seen better days, which we passed through around two years ago.











No matter how desperate a town could be it seems some establishments survive.

Not heard that one. My mother's home in Tantanoola in the South East of SA has been abandoned for some decades with the new farmhouse taking precedence. However the original house still standing with the roof intact. And not a family to spend money not needed and her father on the council.

That last pic of yours is a classic, Williamson!  You'd have to ask where they would find enough "merchandise" in that place.  It sure doesn't look too wonderful.

Would be good to know where some of the old buildings are located, but not too much detail provided.  There's a series, Restoration Australia, on the ABC here in VIC, probably in other States too.  A recent episode featured a restoration of Keith Hall, an old sandstone cottage off a side road about halfway b/t Wangaratta and Beechworth, the owners were put through some hoops getting it restored.  I must check it out some day soon, I hope it'll be worth it. 

Another espisode feature Woodcot Park near Tarraville VIC.  As were down that way over the weekend, we took a short detour, we couldn't really see much from the road, but it was disappointing.
